The Eights

The Eights
Over the weekend there was a silent opening for a restaurant that is near and dear to my heart. It's called The Eights, and it is owned by my friend Peter Rouff and operated by my fiancé Amelia Schineller. Although The Eights is not serving food at this point, and the bar is only open for Sabres games and Friday and Saturday nights, it won't be long before the business hits full stride as a healthy breakfast and lunch bistro-style cafe.

Ultimately, operations will be three-fold. Its central location to the Medical Campus will provide workers with a relaxing place to grab a cup of coffee and a house-made bagel, cereal flakes or 'Pop Tarts'. Vegans and vegetarians will delight in thoughtfully prepared non-meat lunch selections ranging from vegan Philly cheese steaks to vegetarian chicken finger subs to vegan tuna salad sandwiches. For the meat-eaters, there will also be offerings including honey-glazed bacon and Brie on a baguette, ham and pear crisp with fontina and Swiss with a pumpkin spiced spread. To top it off there is going to be a bar menu specializing in comfort food classics re-imagined without the chemicals and unnecessary fillers such as homemade 'Doritos', tater tots, mozzarella bites, etc. Whenever possible, meat selections will be free range and organic - the concept of The Eights is to serve up food that is purchased from local farms and as many of the ingredients as possible will be made in-house, such as infused oils, homemade aiolis and mayos (vegan included) and even house-made mozzarella.

The-Eights-Buffalo-NY.jpgBar and beer-lovers might be surprised to find that an old-world bar has sprung up in this location, built under the watchful eye and skillful hands of master woodworker Robert Sturm (Bob the Builder) and craftsman Jim Watkins (Swannie Jim). The two have spent weeks creating an extended mahogany bar complete with antique columns and English beer engine. Featuring nine draught beers and thirteen bottles (Rusty Chain, Southern Tier Pale Ale, Weihenstephan Hefe Weiss, Tyskie, Goose Island Honker's Ale), as well as a selection of red and white wines. The English beer engine will ultimately be restored into a working cask system in order to showcase limited brew selections served by guest beer pourers. Combined with low lighting, candle lit tables, splashes of color, a signature painting by Peter Fowler and oversized front windows, The Eights hopes to become a relaxing Main Street escape for anyone who appreciates a morning stop-in before the grind, a lunch meet-up, or an after work wind down.

The Eights will be hosting the monthly WAM event this Wednesday, which should be the bar/restaurant's first big night for anyone interested in stopping in to see the place (open to the public - no cover charge). Or stop in on Tuesday, Friday or Saturday nights of this week to watch the Sabres play.

Dear God - two wide screen TVs - strap yourself in BR Online fans...

maybe i'm a lone voice in the wilderness but count me as someone who resents the intrusion of television into my restaurant experience.

we look at screens all day long at work. then we go home and play computer games or update our facebook profiles. we fill up our wallets at the atm screen. we check ourselves onto our flights at airport screens. we pump gas at a screen. we pay our bills at a screen. we text all day long.

can't modern life just one screen-free zone?

I love the photo at the bottom, it leaves you with the impression that they also host the local Comic Con in addition to WAM.

It's always great news when veg-friendly restaurants open! We're expanding our options a bit. I like that. Vegan Philly Cheesesteak, you say? Count me in!

The Eights. Blue Monk. BIstro Europa. Community Beerworks. Flying Bison. Colter Bay - and I am probably missing others - Buffalo knows and loves its beer... beer that doesn't requite a big white vinyl banner with crappy graphics to sell it.

Isn't that Campieri's?

It was Campieri's. This is what Campieri's could have been. In addition to the improvement on the decor, you won't find the owner sitting at the end of the bar on Facebook...

Although the place has good food, seriously, dont people get enough facebook at home? Its sad that I know where you mean without stating where.
Good luck to the 8s. I will definitely be in for some food and drinks.

Keep us posted on the opening of the restaurant...it's hard to find Vegan foods in this area besides Merge and Minty Wellness.

Campieri's was amongst the nicest hell holes I've been in. There was a serious devil's deception about the place. Maybe this place will get an order right, leave out the racism, and clean the tap lines once in a while.

Seriously - I expected to read some grief about the TV(s). THEY look as "bad" as the ONE at Blue Monk. What gives?

and don't forget the heaping amounts of dumb dim-witted comments by the Facebooker and next room downoader and to add to that the endless amount of sexual comments, jokes, and all out rudeness of a sexual nature bestowed upon the women customers and workers there! That place had such potential and everyone told him that but when you cannot see past your own dick and grammar/high school mentality, what else would anyone expect from one of the worst business owners this area has seen in a long, long time. With adults running the new place, I'm sure it will be a strong success and a welcome addition to the community. Good luck too the both of you!

Any updates on the full opening or status of this place?? I drove past it today and it caught my eye as I had never noticed it before. Looking forward to a chance to checking it out once I figure out if it's open!!

It is indeed open! My wife and I went there for dinner last night and it was absolutely marvelous! My wife had the Vegan Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich and she said it was perfect. I had the Vegan Pulled Pork Sliders with Vegan Coleslaw & Sweet Potato Fries and everything was amazing! The Vegan Pulled Pork was seasoned perfect with the right amount of zip and you can't even tell it's not meat! Top that off with great beer and good people, it made for a fantastic evening! I definitely recommend going to The Eights Bistro and know we will be returning soon!
