Souped Up: Globe Market

Souped Up: Globe Market
Following a recommendation from Buffalo Rising readers, I went to Globe Market on Elmwood Avenue to get some soup. First I want to mention the friendliness of the workers. Walking toward the entrance I said "hi" to an employee who was outside taking a break. Seeing my New York Yankees hat, he started chatting with me about the upcoming playoff series against the Minnesota Twins (we shared our concerns about the Yankees pitching depth, but agreed the Yankees will fare well in the series). The gentleman opened the door for my son and me and he headed into the kitchen.

I glanced at the soup offerings for the day and the words Chicken Vindaloo jumped out at me. Being unfamiliar with the soup, I asked the young woman at the counter to describe it to me. All I needed to hear was "Indian food," "curry," and "sweet and spicy." As you can see in the picture, there are peas and tomatoes to accompany the shredded chicken. So how good was it? Damn good. After each bite I quietly said "damn"--quiet enough so that my three-year-old son couldn't comprehend it, nor loud enough for people at the next table to wonder why I curse when I eat soup. But damn, that's some good soup. And sure enough, some bites tasted sweet while other bites tasted spicy. I can't pretend to know the mechanics that make this possible, but whatever they are, they work for me. My advice is to head to Globe and try out this wonderful soup. It's the perfect antidote to a cold and gloomy day. And thanks to the young woman at the counter for being helpful and pleasant!

You can call either Globe Market location, or you can see a list of daily soups by location on Globe's Facebook page. Vegetarian and vegan soups are indicated as such. Look out for the Punjabi soup - it will change your life.

If I worked there and saw you coming with that hat on I would have told you we were closed.

Globe has great selection of eclectic soups. Never been disappointed. Not to be missed also are the soups/stews at the Swannie House. Unusually a couple available (at least seasonally). Very good in a cool old Buffalo atmosphere.

Love Globe Market -- Even their simple tomato basil soul is delicious.

My mom always wants to pop in there for lunch at least once when she comes to visit. Split a BLT on their homemade bread and some soup. Always yummy. :D

I often go to their Downtown location for lunch since I work in that area. Both locations are great though.

I've been to Globe a couple of different times and had good experiences. But just this past weekend I went for lunch and had horrible service and the person behind the counter that waited me was extremley rude!

Globe is a great place, and it's good to see people finally realizing it. Try one of the salads, perfect for lunch.
