Dear Byron,This letter is not intended for Mayor Brown. It is addressed to the man whose leadership I have followed for over two decades. Its' intent is not to be mistaken as malicious, but to be accepted with the love it is being sent. On behalf of myself and our community, I am appealing to the sensibilities of the man who this community entrusted their safety and caretaking through the electoral process.Byron, there is a cancer in your cabinet. Its name is Steve Casey. His presence in your camp has derailed the direction of your purpose. It has inflicted pain and confusion on innocent people and employees and brought organized chaos to your leadership. His quest to become powerful through your anointing must be stopped. If there was ever one thing our peers always believed about you, Bryon, is that you were fair. In evaluating the up and down side of a situation, you always opted for what was right. That was your leadership style, pre-Casey.Your decision however, to fire me without due process and refusal to pay out the remainder of my term is reflective of Deputy Mayor Casey's influence on your decision making. This decision serves no real purpose nor is it politically prudent. It is, however, definitely politically motivated. The timing of my termination (right before Golembek's primary) speaks volumes about the real purpose behind your actions. You simply gave in to some heavy political pressure from people who had nothing to do with getting you re-elected. I am respectfully requesting you return to the leadership style that got you elected Masten District Councilman, NYS Senator and Mayor of the City of Buffalo. The Social Security Death Master has been given God status. The $800,000 spent on health care premiums for dead retirees is not lost. It was stolen by those families who knowingly used insurance they were not entitled to. Our Comptroller should be trying to get that money back from those families - not trying to help fire me.Relations with our labor unions are greatly improved. The new Director of Compensation and Benefits is making phenomenal strides in finding and correcting decades old systemic problems with service delivery and overall division functioning. The Civil Service Division is operating efficiently and the Personnel Division is gearing up to conduct collective bargaining agreement training. All of these things have occurred under my watch. I have no more business being fired than Casey does remaining your Deputy Mayor. Our detractors are ecstatic watching us prepare to commit suicide on the spirit of our beloved Grassroots legacy and do irreparable damage to any opportunity of dreams you may have for higher office. I besiege you - look for an exit route for Steve Casey. As long as he breathes in your cabinet, it will be on life support, leaving our city gasping for air as he continues to negative impact your leadership with clandestine poison. The final destination of this journey we have embarked on is a place called disaster. Neither one of us will arrive safely if you opt to make this trip to the end of the road. While the outcome for me may impact my employability, it will leave an indelible mark on your political career.Byron, the best chemotherapy you can give your advisory cabinet is to change its composition. Give it a make over. Replenish it with diversity and some good old fashioned Buffalo born and bred loyal statisticians. Then and only then will this community's confidence be restored in your leadership of the City that loves you, embraced you and that God has strategically placed you at the head of.Respectfully submitted,Commissioner Karla Thomas
Karla Thomas Hammers Steve Casey in Letter to Mayor Brown
Comments
Leave a commentI hope that Karla Thomas resigns from any role as a mentor for youth, especially young African American girls. She is the complete antithesis of a role model for them. She is only looking out for herself while she tries to cover her ass. She has accepted no responsibility for her actions, and has done her best to try to blame everyone else for her behaviors. Her behavior is just shameful and puts her on par with the likes of Bernie Ebers and Kenneth Lay. Shameful, just shamefu. (thanks Sally)
"Dear Byron,
This letter is not intended for Mayor Brown."
fail.
Despite whatever has been said about hiring qualified personnel, when you have political and civil service patronage debts and strong political grassroots campaign organizations you get people like Thomas and the recent Police Commissioner nominee in Buffalo's municipal government. In Buffalo, the result has also often been the employment of the mediocre and occasionally incompetent or very incompetent. If one followed the controversies surrounding Thomas over the course of this year, it's very obvious that she was in over her head. She also intends to do as much bullying as is necessary to insure her slice of the money pie. That's what this is about.
So true! She was entrusted with a good portion of Buffalo's future and now it is obvious that she was only in this for herself. The end result of her incompetence will be felt for years to come, unless we bring in someone that can undo the damage that she has caused and put us on the right track for the future.
what a joke! If this is the most intelligent letter she could write, how the hell was she ever seen as fit for her job in the first place? Pathetic. Adios, Karla. Good luck finding a job paying half what you've been earning.
Anyone with a salary of $91,374 should be saving lives or working at NASA.
I think The Ricker makes minimum wage. A bit jealous?
Couple things - shouldn't "besiege" be "beseech"? And, I didn't know God voted in the last mayoral election.
Well, God, if you do happen to vote in the next election, would you mind voting for a smart politician for once?
well, she's right about one thing. steve casey is a snake.
This is remarkable on so many levels.
Before any of you criticize the tea-partiers again, come back and read this letter. I've yet to see a stronger argument for smaller governmental.
I'm confident Karla's copy of 'Elements of Style' is still in fine condition. Does this letter bring more condemnation upon the author, or the individual that put her in a position of power?
Guess we can rest pretty well assured that those 'national searches' haven't extended much past Bailey.
Apparently, Thomas' firing has turned into a circular one.
I would say this is Mayor Brown's bed and he has to lie in it;
But the sad truth is that, as Buffalonians, it's our collective bed, that WE must lie in.
And to all those who felt Mickey Kearns was not an adequate choice for change of leadership a year ago, I "besiege" you . . .
WHERE/WHO IS OUR FUTURE LEADERS??
they are busy staying the hell out of electoral politics because we will publically, vocally shred them to pieces, second-guess their motivations, and treat them as guilty until proven innocent.
ok, raise your hands: who here volunteers to be on the receiving end of the kind of contempt that you enjoy dishing out?
i say this as someone who has dished out my share of contempt and wonders what good it does.
Chenango>"to all those who felt Mickey Kearns was not an adequate choice for change of leadership a year ago, I "besiege" you . . . "
I thought MK was lacking in substance and too similar to BB to make any big difference. But I have to admit, one good thing about Kearns is he's supporting Paladino for governor while the mayor is supporting Cuomo.

"WHERE/WHO IS OUR FUTURE LEADERS??"
I used to think Antoine Thompson would probably be the next mayor (probably starting in 2018 after Brown's 3rd term), but lately Darius Pridgen seems more likely.
Typical democrat "but I didn't inhale" and "I never had sex with that woman" excuses. It is no surprise that so many democrats have jumped over to the Tea Party and that the democrat party is running scared. Remember Brown supporters, you voted for this. The democrats are all about blaming others for their problems and expecting someone else to fix their bad decisions. Karla Thomas and Byron Brown are no different. Brown threw everyone under the bus on the One Sunset scandal. Thomas is throwing everyone under the bus on the Dead Benefits scandal. I am sure we will hear the same thing again and again, but that is ok with most Buffalonians because they only vote for democrats.
Byron is Steve Casey's puppet. He doesn't wipe his ass without Casey's say-so. Casey plays a dirty divide and conquer political game that only exacerbates the culture of negativity, suspicion, and hostility that has plagued Buffalo politics for decades. I’m sure that Karla Thomas is not blameless for the shortcomings of her office. Qualified or not, she was given that job as patronage for helping to get Byron elected through her work as head of Grassroots. That's patronage and nepotism at its most disgusting. That said, I still think her letter is very honest and truthful about the underlying problem in City Hall. Something is rotten in City Hall and firing Thomas is not going to get rid of the stench.
"I besiege you"
....do you mean Karla that you are metaphorically standing outside Byron's mote and personal ramparts with a pitch fork and torch??? what exactly are the qualifications for a hundred thousand dollar water authority 'grass roots' patronage job? evidently a simple GED grasp of the english language is not one of them.
when you lie down with political dogs,
it's disingenuous to whine about rising up with NINETY THOUSAND DOLLAR FLEAS! you didn't seem to mind that this same carcinogenic steve casey campaigned for byron on the state tax payers dime......there's a problem alright, you just don't seem to understand that you were, and are a big part of it!
