THE END by Cassie Elsaesser

With the growing popularity of shows like Mad Men it is no wonder that the 1950's chic and glamorous style is coming back in a big way. With the seasons changing from warm summer days to cool fall evenings, this style is perfect for that transitional phase.  When picturing the women of the of 1950's our minds are immediately filled with images of high wasted skirts, tight fitting cardigans, floral print dresses and figure flattering, well...everything!

It certainly was a time to celebrate and accentuate a woman's body. Designs by Coco Chanel, Christian Dior and Cristobal Balenciaga were quintessential to this era and epitomized the glamour we still reminisce about today. On the other hand when picturing the 1950's man, our minds can take us to two ends of the fashion spectrum. The post war years brought about the booming economy and made way for the middle class man in shorter slacks and skinny ties. The middle of the decade brought about a much different image of the 1950s man, the rebel. When picturing this style we often think of the slicked back hair, cuffed jeans and a leather jacket.

Designers are embracing the 1950's femininity and sending their creations down the runway with a 2010 twist. Tadashi Shoji showcased his take on modern femininity by accentuating a woman's body, which is very reminiscent of the 50's women. His beautiful strapless dresses accessorized with a black belt, show off a woman's hourglass figure. Peter Jenson displayed a more structured feminine appeal with high wasted black pants accessorized with a tan belt and a bold blue shirt.  Perry Ellis took 50's menswear to a modern level by pairing bold colored pants with a color block sweater and a structured jacket, this look is classic but has a contemporary edge that is polished and fashionable.

Fall is the perfect season to showcase the1950's style and take your skirts and dresses from warm weather to cold. Floral Dresses that were purchased over the summer can easily be made into a fall ready look. The key is to be conscious of the print. Darker and richer colors are better suited for the chillier weather seasons. Adding a cardigan and a pair of knee hugging boots is a great way to showcase the 50's style by adding a modern twist.

Accessorizing your skirts and dresses is a prefect way to transition your wardrobe from summer to fall. Adding opaque tights and a studded belt to a strapless floral dress can add a modern edge while still giving that feminine 50's appeal. High wasted cropped pants, that were perfect in the summer weather with sandals, can now be taken into the fall season with booties and a long sleeve shirt tucked into them.  This look is very reminiscent of the 50's chic women but by adding booties your taking this look from the 50's to 2010 and from the summer sun to the cool fall air.
