Li'l Black Dress by Cassie Elsaesser:
The little black dress, also known as the LBD, has been a staple to women's closets for decades. Every woman needs a timeless and classic piece in her wardrobe and the black dress is THE timeless piece. Each decade took their own point of view on accessorizing and styling this classic piece of women's fashion. In the 1940s women added structure and elegance to their LBD by pairing the dress with oversized hats and long gloves. The 50's LBD accentuated a women's figure by hugging the smallest part of her waist then flowing out at the bottom, and could be accessorized with polka dots or a red belt or purse.
In 1961 Breakfast at Tiffany's came to Theatres and seeing Audrey Hepburn in her iconic black Chanel dress with long black gloves added a simplistic femininity that was reminiscent of the times for the upper class woman. The 70's added a bohemian flair with floppy hats and longs coats, where as the 80s went glam with shoulder pads and a shiny peplum skirts. In the 90's we saw the grunge trend rub off on the LBD by adding crochet to the dress, or pairing it with some Dr. Martens. Of course a women in a black dress needs a well-dressed man to accompany her. Men's suits have also changed throughout the decades, but still stayed classic and timeless adding a perfect compliment to a women's LBD.

So now here we are in 2010 and what are the prefect accessories for the LBD? Lets start with textured tights. Textured black tights are a great way to add style and trend to a classic black dress. You can dress this look up with heels or even dress it down with boots and a leather jacket for fall. Ana Sui and Barbara Frank both showcased this look with black textured tights, whereas BCBG used white tights to complete their runway ensembles. Now with fall in the air stores are starting to bulk up their selection on textured tights, you can go anyway you would like with this trend. Cynthia Rowley showed off a bold look with animal print tights with shades of blue and beige where Michele Smith chose bold red tights as a trend for fall. The perfect thing about the LBD is that its so simple on top you can get away with going bold on the bottom.

A great way to really amp up a black dress is decking yourself out in jewelry. In recent years we have seen stacks of necklaces as a big trend in eveningwear. Tracy Reese showcased her take on this trend by using a fabric chain and beautiful oversized jewels. No girl can go out for a night on the town without a purse, but oversized bags will clutter your look. The clutch is a perfect solution and is also very trendy right now. A bold blue or red hue is a great solution to add flare and style to your look, accessorizing in a leopard print is very in for fall right now and is a great compliment to any LBD. The key for updating a black dress is to ultimately have fun with it, after all, the dress may be simple but the 2010 girl is certainly not.

Now for the men, the classic suit is as much a staple in a man's closet as the LBD is in woman's closet. As with any classic piece you want to update it and bring it into 2010. Tailoring is always important for a men's suit, a well-fitted suit can't go wrong. Grey suits are trending for fall and Perry Ellis and Logan Dager both showcased this updated look and color to the classic men's suit. Another way to modernize your classic suit is in the neckwear. Skinny ties are very in right now and really update this look. Bow ties are also trending right for fall, Perry Ellis showcased his take on the classic suit by pairing a bold blue shirt and bow tie with a grey suit.

Adding trendy accessories is a perfect way to amp up the both of these classic pieces of fashion. A well-dressed man and woman are perfect compliments to each other and can paint the town red in their black and grey ensembles.
