Construction Update: Global Vascular Institute

Construction Update: Global Vascular Institute

A major addition to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus is beginning to take its final form.  Installation of the blue glass on the 10-story Global Vascular Institute and Clinical & Transitional Research Center/Incubator, a joint venture between the University at Buffalo and Kaleida Health is nearing completion. The $291 million facility aims to transform Buffalo into a "world-class health care destination".  The center will form a collaborative effort between Kaleida Health physicians and UB researchers to provide advanced medical care, vascular disease treatment breakthroughs, and development of local biotechnology business opportunities.

The two-year construction project, designed by Canon Design, will open in 2011 and advance the UB 2020 strategic plan to relocate the health sciences programs to downtown Buffalo.  It is estimated that this expansion of UB will draw 13,000 UB faculty, staff, and students to downtown.

During the goobernatorial (spelling seems appropriate for that group...) debate Cuomo did mention UB 2020 as a model to be followed by other communities.

Was this just a bone thrown to WNY, or is this part of his platform? Was the sticking point in the legislature, or is this something he can do something about?

This actually looks better than the renderings!

Exciting! Hopefully this will continue to attract private bio med companies!

I was just thinking the same thing. Looks way better and brighter than the renderings.

I agree it does look better.

A bit off topic...but why does the new courthouse look so different than the drawings still?

Wonderful, simply wonderfu

Really? Then I must be in the minority, because I thought the renderings look better. I was thinking that the actual building looks like a cheap imitation. The clear glass that's inside that swirly thing (for lack of a more technical term) looks flush, while in the rendering there was more of a setback. That differnece in depth made it look more sophisticated in the rendering. Now we just have a multi-colored glass wall, and that's not so interesting.

...But don't get me wrong. I'm still very happy about the building over all.

I think that swirly thing will get added on later, on top of and wrapping around the glass.

Yep. Rendering with set-back glass = much cooler, more Jetson-like.

Oh well, at least it's a new building in Buffalo, can't argue TOO loudly!

I think the Jetson swirly thing is still coming. If not the rendering is a good con job.

Like the Courthouse...

All in all it is a fine looking building. Better still is what will be going on inside.

There's a white "shell" that has yet to be applied- that will give the windows depth as you see in the renderings.

Yeah, and I guess it's best to not judge these things until they're finished.

Hopefully, the research at places like this will develop into new and efficient ways to get blood from a stone.

Ugly. What a disgusting addition to the city. A surface lot would have been better. It doesn't flow with the neighborhood. I hate the world.
Kidding, of course. Looks cool. Thumbs up to buildings higher than a Walgreens.

I went to Anchor bar the other day for lunch, I was shocked this is really coming together fast. Definatley a cool looking building. Looks like they are going to pass the federal court house, whats the deal with that project?

Absolutely hideous. "looks cool." What a ridiculous remark.

I think it's called irony.

Is there anyway we can stop this and halt construction. Then when do stop it, when they try to deconstruct it we can protest and stop that from happening, too. Co'mon Buffalo Beast, let's get behind stopping this from happening, you are so good at it.

I dont know maybe its the white paneling of the rendering or the curved edges but something about the design screams Macintosh/Ive inspired design.

Does anyone else see this?

stop this project immediately! then we must preserve it!

Only Buffaloanians would complain about a 300 million dollar building being built in their town.

I'm quite pleased about this development.

...but it still looks like a crappy box.
