Biketoberfest is Back!

Biketoberfest is Back!
By Seamus Gallivan:

We nearly missed out on a third annual Biketoberfest fundraiser for sustainable transportation gurus Green Options Buffalo, now set for this coming Tuesday, October 26th, at Mister Goodbar.

The rally wasn't wrecked by any lack of love for the first two Biketoberfests - each drew hundreds of pedal-pushers and raised thousands of dollars with a simple celebration of bicycling in Buffalo featuring the hometown brew, Flying Bison Brewery's Rusty Chain Amber Lager, which was inspired by and pitches proceeds to GO-Buffalo.

It wasn't deflated by the defunctification of past host venues Campieri's Pizza and Lafayette Tap Room - Goodbar ain't superstitious.

The pothole in the way of party plans was the fact that this three year-old organization, led by NYC native and New Buffalo luminary Justin Booth, is busy hitting its stride - their Recycle-a-Bicycle school program resumed in September with an expanded reach; their Community Workshop at Colvin and Linden added staff and underwent a re-organization/grand re-opening earlier this month, boosting their walk-in citizen services and stewardship of the Buffalo Blue Bicycle bike sharing program; and their advocacy at City Hall that first made wheelies with passage of nationally groundbreaking "Complete Streets" legislation in 2008 was recently boosted by new U.S. Census returns showing that bicycling is booming in Buffalo well beyond national norms.

In short, GO-Buffalo is steering wheels of real civic progress. So as October kicked in with no sign of Biketoberfest, a critical mass of friends of the cause held a bit of an intervention with Justin. Like the event itself, the message was simple - you keep pounding the pavement, we'll plan the party.

While Mister Goodbar represents a new venue - and in it some of the busiest Flying Bison taps in town - the structure is the same. Admission, which includes food and Rusty Chain beer, is $10 if you arrive on a bicycle, $20 if not. Bike valets will be at the door to serve all cyclists. Inside will be raffles, auctions, and music from both DJ Cutler and the Blood Thirsty Vegans.
That's about it - bikes, beers...and lederhosen! View the video below to get in the mood, and look for lederhosen ladies around town over the next few days - pose for a picture to be posted on the Buffalo Biketoberfest Facebook event page, and if you tag yourself, you'll be entered into a drawing to win admission for two.

As the Germans say, Viva Biketoberfest! [CHEERING, CHEERING]

Great. If it's not bad enough to dodge bicyclists who just refuse to obey the rules of the road, now we have to add drunk bicyclists who refuse to obey the rules of the road. Who's the ad wizard who thought this one up?

bbvdm,
I'm not sure if you are aware of what green options buffalo is here for but one of their objectives is to create safer streets for bicyclists, walkers and automobiles.

I assume you are perfect and never ran a stop sign nor turned in your auto without properly signaling beforehand but GO Buffalo is THE ONLY ORGANIZATIONS in town that is making an effort to make the streets safer.

This event is raising funds to help them reach their mission.

Stop by on Tuesday, you may learn something.

The message laymen like me get is that you are promoting drinking and riding. The people on the poster are on bikes with beers in hand.

Get off your high horse and learn from being on the streets and watching ALL bicyclists ignore the laws of the road and consistently run red lights, stop signs, ride between traffic lanes, and on and on. It wouldn't be so bad if most would at least be considerate, but that is just not the case. Bicyclists + Alcohol = Recipe for disaster. How is it that promoting drinking and driving is a good thing? Are all you "green" people that ignorant? Making the streets safer would mean educating the bicyclists. And they don't seem to want to learn.

Does this $10 get you free drinks or drink specials?

$10 (if you arrive on a bicycle) earns you Rusty Chain and food!

Who's gonna thumbs-down that?!

bbvdm---It's like any other social function where there's alcohol served..People have to drink responsibly..And if you've ever been on a bicycle you'd know that you can't get tanked and ride home safely..

carter---
I suppose you'd rather have the poster with a bunch of people holding colas and rocking out to the latest creed album...i doubt your party would have too many attendees

So stop being so damn negative and come out and support a great cause...or at least keep the negativity to yourselves. Better yet stay home cause youre both lame.

Bbvdm you are clueless. You and carter saw a cycling related post and just could not resist could you? I see threw your veil of narcissistic opportunism. I ask you, if this were a white tie fundraiser serving wine and champagne would you have the same complaint of people driving to the event? or is this just a chance for you to shoot your mouth off at an event that will surely be more fun than you have had in your life. Cycling + Fundraiser = opportunity for you to rebuke us with your compassion and knowledge of safety and sobriety. If you are jealous of the fun and freedom had by many cyclists I understand and invite you to leave your keys on the table and use your heart to get down the street. That is if you have one.

I know you hate cyclists who may or may not delay the mashing of your gas pedal an extra 5-10 seconds or so but trust me the efforts of any cyclist are greater than those of you and your gas sucking pride machine fueled by the anger which you project at cyclist like myself. I always hear complaints of people like you who claim cyclist dont obey traffic rules. However, I do not believe you really care about the issue of safety at all. It is my belief that you only care about what will make life easier for you and less fun for us all.

"Are all you "green" people that ignorant? Making the streets safer would mean educating the bicyclists. And they don't seem to want to learn."

Please Teach me benevolent one.

I have no problem with cycling, I just have a problem with the poster promoting the event. If there were a classic car show with proceeds going to charity, and it showed people behind the wheel drinking beer, I'd take issue as well.

bbvdm - It's interesting that you claim omniscience - I'm an occasional biker and walker but I drive most of the time. I don't see many bikers or walkers violating the rules, but I do see many drivers doing it, and according to their gross tonnage, they can do a lot more damage. Roads are for people, not for cars, and people can be in cars or bikes or walking or running or pushing a baby stroller, or on personal wheels. The automobile doesn't give anyone the right of way - they can just do more damage.

What???? Roads are for people, not for cars?? For people pushing a baby stroller?? I can't even respond to this lunacy.
