A Monumental Clean-Up

A Monumental Clean-Up
The Buffalo Green Fund (BGF) is a little known organization in the City of Buffalo made up of an all volunteer board with a passion to cultivate, promote, sponsor and develop urban beautification.

Despite mostly going unnoticed it has had a tremendous impact on Buffalo's green space. Originally established in 1973 as a non-profit organization, the Green Fund has continued to support efforts through its better known initiatives, however; did you know that the Green Fund helped create the 14th Street Tree Farm with PUSH, Re-Tree WNY and Grassroots Gardens? Or that Niagara Square is maintained by its multitude of volunteers through Buffalo in Bloom?

As another example of a selfless commitment to make Buffalo a better place to live - Judy Dean, one of the Green Fund's directors, spearheaded an initiative to clean-up the green spaces surrounding downtown's monuments.

Judy stated, "My interest, as a member of the Buffalo Green Fund, is to see the City of Buffalo looking beautiful.  With a specific focus on downtown, I identified locations that have been neglected.  The two public spaces that I felt needed the most help were the Samuel Welch Monument and the Buffalo Veterans Monument, both located near City Hall."

Part of this project involved partnering with new Deputy Parks Commissioner Andy Rabb to ensure the grass would be mowed and garbage continuously cleaned up. You can see the results for yourself in the pictures - it looks great!

Judy has just started and will continue to work with the city on behalf of the BGF and our community to improve our downtown green spaces.  If you would like to support this effort and sponsor the initiative feel free to contact Judy.

Fabulous. What about the green space at the foot of Main and Edward/Pearl? An amazing sculpture (borrowed from AKAG), a dramatic planting scheme (I envision rows of sunflowers for some reason) would be wonderful.
