Opportunity Knocks? Will anyone answer?
We love to hear from our readers, especially when they present ideas that can take a good project to an en excellent one. Many of these ideas come from attempting to turn lemons into lemonade. Say, for example, the Buffalo Maritime Center loses its home out at the Outer Harbor (it just did)... and at the same time various other waterfront advancements are moving forward right around the corner... opportunity knocks? The following submitted by C. Andrle:

"The recent news about the re-opening of the Buffalo Lighthouse next year included information that the Coast Guard will be releasing 4.6 acres around the lighthouse for public use as well as "consolidating/demolishing" several buildings.

"The Buffalo Maritime Center, recently evicted from their waterfront space by the NFTA and now in temporary (landlocked) rental space, has previously proposed that the abandoned Coast Guard buildings be reused

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
Buffalo & Erie County Public Library Staff Review by Ann Kling:

One night in modern Britain, a man named Jack murders a father, mother and a little girl.  But the baby boy of the family escapes.  He toddles his way to the local graveyard where he is rescued and then taken in by a childless ghost couple, the Owens, who allow him to live in their tomb.  Nobody Owens (Bod for short) spends his childhood in the graveyard with the ghosts from many eras, and a guardian, a benevolent creature of the night who brings him food, clothes, and books from outside the graveyard.

By Seamus Gallivan:

Tonight is a special night in The Good Neighborhood and for anyone else who's a sucker for a homecoming. The Sportsmens Tavern will host a birthday show for Lake Shore High School grad and current Nashville resident Chris Nathan, a budding soul sensation bound to break out and bring Buffalo with him.

The singer/songwriter and die-hard Sabres fan will perform an intimate set accompanied only by ace Buffalo drummer Jeff Schaller - no word on whether or not Jeffro will be playing his Blue & Gold Sabres drum kit, but the two are definitely developing

Black Mountain and The Black Angels Tonight at the Tralf Music Hall
By Greg Genco:

These two bands share not only an affinity with a particular color but also with spacey esoteric sounds commonly referred to as psychedelic rock. Black Mountain hailing from Vancouver come down more on the heavy side of things as they channel Black Sabbath and Deep Purple.

The Black Angels, representing Austin, Texas employ more drones and effects conjuring The Velvet Underground, Spacemen 3, and The 13th Floor Elevators. In fact, the band recorded and toured with legendary 13th Floor Elevators' leader Roky Erickson in 2008.

Tonight's show,

Buffalo’s Biggest Halloween Party!
If you're going to attend a super creepy Halloween party, then you might as well go to one in a location that's super haunted. It's a widely know fact that the Town Ballroom is notorious for sending cold chills down many visitor's spine. Don't believe the visitors? Then ask the ghost hunters who continue to explore every last detail of the historic building looking for clues as to what makes the place go 'bump' in the night. Each year the in-house ghosts are treated with hoards of characters around Halloween, making for one of the best costume parties of the year. That party is tonight!

Tom & Jay’s House Party @ Cozumel
By Fun Al:

Years ago, in days gone by, when our younger selves could tear it up like no one's business, there was a party of lore. Tom Slyvan and Jason Mang held a Halloween house party that rivaled none. Huge in scope, laden with debauchery of the highest level, and more often than not, the center of local law enforcement's attention.

Sadly, we have begun to age to the point where it is no longer fun nor amusing to have to repair the dry wall for the 14th time after a guest 'mistakenly' put his or her head through it. Thus, the party was moved to a larger, more public

Progress!?

145 Kehr Street is gone.  Final resting spot unknown.  The early 20th Century brick masonry structure was torn down by owner George Rogers.  Rogers operates Kehr-Buffalo Wire Frame and Rogers Industrial Springs, family-owned and operated companies located at 127 Kehr Street at Urban Street.

The Buffalo Preservation Board signed-off on the demolition last month.  Rogers has owned the property for over 30 years and is proposing to erect a one-story metal building on the property.  A decade ago, a fire sprinkler was reportedly set off and damaged the building's

One School’s Field of Dreams
By Gwen Ito:

The year was 1954. Buffalo Seminary, an all-girls high school located on Bidwell Parkway, had just purchased the John D. Larkin Estate on the corner of Forest Avenue and Lincoln Parkway. Within months, the back yard to the 1915 mansion was transformed into a playing field for competitive sports, including field hockey and soccer. A quote from the school's publication that year summed up the significance of the acquisition: "This field will be wonderful for the students, especially for those who have had to deal in the past with slopes, ruts and mud holes. At last

Buffalo Premier of Gasland: The Movie
On Saturday, October 30, the Bulger Communication Center at Buffalo State College will be hosting the Buffalo premier of GASLAND, a film by Josh Fox.

No Fracking Way!
There's an important message that needs to be sent to the DEC by the people of Buffalo. To those who would stand to make the big bucks while causing environmental turmoil, and putting people's health at risk, the message is, "This is NOT acceptable." Join protesters after work today (4pm) at 270 Michigan Avenue (corner of Seneca Street) to demand that the DEC not endorse the practice of deep well hydrofracking.

Not only does hydrofracking involve mixing millions of gallons of water with over 500 different chemicals that endanger our drinking water, it has also recently been reported
