Blue Monk to Open--Finally!

Blue Monk to Open--Finally!
The most anticipated restaurant opening of this year is surely that of Blue Monk, the planned Elmwood Avenue bar with a purported gastopub-style menu and a plethora of good beers on tap. The idea for this bar and eatery, pioneered by Mike Shatzel of Cole's, feels as if it has been a long time coming. A total overhaul of the former Merlin's tavern at Breckenridge and Elmwood--and the extensive wait for approval from the State Liquor Authority on the pubs liquor license--has kept neighbors, beer fans and super foodies on pins and needles, waiting for the day when the doors would finally open. Further temptation came by way of building tours during the Elmwood Festival of the Arts and a menu preview at Cole's just a few days ago.

This afternoon, Blue Monk announced that they have finally received approval on their license and that the little pub will open next week, as soon as the physical license arrives in the mail. I can tell you that I am as excited as the dozen or so people who email me at BR every week, looking for news of the bar's opening day. What I do want to do, is take this opportunity to point out that no Great Restaurant was ever Great on its first day and that, as people who love to dine out and support local restaurants, we should all be willing to give these guys some time to work out the kinks and sort out their systems. As an owner, try as you might to do trial services with friends as guests, and to train, train, train your staff, there is no doubt that when your place is first open, things are going to go wrong. They just are. To align our expectations with that reality--and to extend the waitstaff, kitchen and owners of a new establishment the room to make mistakes--is the kindest thing we can do to support any new venture.

Congratulations to all of those who worked hard on this project. We look forward to sampling some great food and cool brews in the coming weeks!

Great news, can't wait to see the beer list. I know this is unrelated, but does anyone know what happened with Falafel Bar on Allen? walked by last night and it was empty, cleared out, and closed up...

Falafel Bar closed about a month or two ago. Only the Sheridan Drive location is still open.

Glad they are open for business!

While they were waiting for the liquor license could they have created a website? A facebook site is good, but I don't think I've gone to a restaurant without looking at the website first.

The bar will open first to help iron out some of the wrinkles. The kitchen will follow shortly after that. But with the beer list it will still be worth the trip even there is no food initially.

mike is great & I hope the BM does well but the space is so small, it's a bitch to get a drink at coles when it's crowded I can't imagine how the new place will. good luck though guys!

This bar should seem roomier than Coles. Also, a lot of money has been spent on the back courtyard which should be a big hit come next summer.

This place is rumored to be modeled after the MUCH MORE CROWDED "Monks" from Philadelphia which is an extremely huge success.

Let's hope it's a great success.

In regards to licensing, I found it a bit hard to stomach one of the 'board members' stating she was 'taking a big risk' but would vote in favor.

Funny, but it looks to me like all the risk is on Mr. Shatzel's shoulders. To think that this investment was made, the approval delayed, and that all of this could have been for naught had this one board member voted no is a testament to how wrapped in red tape this state has become.

No one wonder Mr. Palladino is finding an audience for his message. Bureaucratic risk taking...that's rich, next thing you know some politician will try to tell us how many jobs he saved or created.

I agree, either vote yea or nay but comments like that are unnecessary. I'm glad he got the license for Blue Monk, but I'm also happy that the Liquor Authority is doing its job and holding bar owners' feet to the fire for underage drinking infractions, etc. It's a shame the previous complaints mean that he isn't licensed to serve drinks on the back patio. I guess the beer garden will have to wait a year or two.

I think Blue Monk will draw a very different crowd from Cole's, so I don't expect any of that to be an issue there.

The SLA are turds. Holding feet to fire, as you say, is great. But saying she is "taking a risk" is complete stupidity. If she feels she is taking a risk on this venture, then perhaps the SLA needs to investigate current licenses, because Coles is hardly as big of a problem as... I can name at least a dozen. It's not like you have the same problems on Elmwood as you do on Chippewa. If she thinks Mike is risky then by her standard there'd be half the places serving on Chippewa.

I also agree about the different crowd. But we'll see.

This is a great thing! I'm excited to see what the initial reaction is and how it all develops. I'm hoping that it we be a smashing great success! Can't wait to have my first beer!

your first beer? I guess the Blue Monk would be a good place to try your first. Beer is an acquired taste though.

Sadly, I'll have already moved before it opens. I was really looking forward to this as a summer hang out. I guess I'll meet you around christmas time!

Merlin's had to have been, without a doubt, one of the most depressing places I've ever been in. It was what I'd picture Moe's Tavern to look like.

It wasn't any problem/s with Cole's casuing the SLA to delay the license, it was Brinkworth, who still owns the building.

4matic, read the News article I linked above. The SLA was specifically concerned about past problem's at Cole's.

I had the opportunity to check it out one night and was really impressed with the set-up. I think it'll be a real hit. In a perfect world both Merlin's AND the Blue Monk could exist.

4matic-your comments totally false. Problems came up regarding SLA violations from Coles and Cleveland Ave block club. Owner had no previous licenses thus no issue with SLA. Know your facts before you post

Think what you want, I really don't care, but it's not always about previous licensing. If I had, I don't know... a dwi & tried to get a liquor license the sla might not be willing to give me one.

And really what bars, besides a place like the Elmwood Lounge, don't have past issues with the SLA?
