Bills Release Trent Edwards

Bills Release Trent Edwards
Yesterday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the Bills were shopping Trent Edwards to other teams.  Schefter's speculation that the Bills were offering Edwards as trade bait inspired one of the better Tweets of 2010 from @zibby42: Buffalo also offering Love Canal and the Bethlehem Steel plant. RT @Adam_Schefter Buffalo Bills shopping QB Trent Edwards.

Well, today the Bills confirmed the obvious - that no one would trade anyting for Edwards - and released the quarterback.  Despite Edwards' demotion to back-up, the decision to release Edwards is a bit of a surprise for the Bills organization.  But it's a good surprise.  As bad as Edwards looked on the field, he managed to look even worse yesterday as Fitzpatrick actually moved the offense up and down the field and generated 30 points in offense (with some help from special teams).

So long Trent.

This move says a lot in a good way about the organization.

I agree, past administrations would have kept him on the team.

Ding dong the wicked witch is dead.

It doesn't speak well for the organization. Gailey can't analyze talent. He picks the guy, has the guy take all first team snaps, and then does a total 180. Ralph, Nix, and everyone else at the organization championed the guy for FOUR years. If it took four years for a doctor to tell you that you should get rid of a giant goiter on your neck would you say it speaks well for him?

It says alot about the organization, but not in a good way. Not even close.

It speaks well for the current organization, forget anything that happened under Jauron (or try to bury those painful memories anyway).

Gailey may have liked him, or he may have had pressure from the top for him to be the #1 guy. Plus, practice reps and preseason reps might give him some conception of talent, but are not the same as real game experience. Turns out that after two real games, he knew Edwards was not the guy.

Tully: Actually this does make the organization better. Even Bill Belichick has to cut players he picked. He didn't start Brady until Drew got hurt, does that make him a poor talent analyzer? Trent was the best QB in camp and the preseason, so why not start him. Also you may want to check your time line with Buddy Nix, he wasn't hired as a scout by the Bills until 2009. You also may want to check his previous scouting record with San Diego. If they would have let Trent play the whole season and let him go after the season was done, you would be the first person complaining that the Bills should have admitted they were wrong and cut him earlier.

D: I didn't say it doesn't make the organization better. I've wanted Edwards gone since '08. Yes, I'm complaining they should have admitted they were wrong and cut him earlier. What's your point?

I got what you're saying Armani, and I understand there has been a front office turnover during Edwards' time; I'm just saying I don't think it speaks well for the organization. The Bills front office is a joke and looks even moreso the past few weeks. He sticks up for his player when some Bills fans who have probably been in agony for most of their young lives have some words for a guy they can clearly see is not a NFL starting QB - which I commend - but then he sees what some non-expert teenage kids saw five weeks ago in training camp and gives the guy the boot.

I don't put any of this on Chan Gailey. I think he realized at the start of the year that the only possible QB on the roster that had a chance to be a long term QB was Trent (a one in a million chance). He knew Fitzpatrick and Brohm had no shot of being the answer, and they weren't going to find another QB for this year, so he went with Edwards to see what he could do.

This is pure speculation, but I think Edwards lost his starting job AND his place on the Bills the second after he ran out of bounds on 4th down in the Green Bay game. Even though the game was over at that point, you have to chuck the ball down the field and see what happens. When he ran out of bounds, he gave up on his team. I think Chan saw that and said "You're done".

Watching yesterday's game, you could see that the team actually had some life. The offensive line wasn't great, but they actually created some running lanes AND gave Ryan more than three seconds on a few plays to throw the ball. I think Chan is setting a tone that his team will be one that doesn't settle for mediocrity, and if you quit on your teammates, you're gone.

Maybe it's not Chan...maybe somebody above him made the call. But I like the move...hope it's the first of many good ones.

I'm liking Chan's draft pick of Spiller more and more. Can't wait to see who he drafts at QB in 2011.

I agree. Edwards is like the great student who chokes on standardized tests. He froze in game situations and failed to react quickly when he most needed to.

Maybe they'll use his roster spot and find someone who can actually tackle.

Step in the right direction. Dick and Trent were on the list that had to go. Both gone now Bills can move on to future.

Not drafting a major quarterback in the first rounds reflects poorly on the Bills organization. So does six head coaches in ten years. So does a long string of losing seasons. I don't think letting Trent Edwards makes the Bills look any worst then they already are.

I blame George W. Bush for the Bills losing.

I'm glad about this.

First, I want the Bills to draft a QB this coming year, a class everyone says is rich in good prospects. I'm glad they didn't reach for a lesser prospect this past draft (as they did when they reached for Trent). Better to wait for better prospects. Kelly came from the richest QB class in history and those who know such things say 2011 is another 1983. Next year is the year to grab a QB. And in order to get the best draft position possible next year, I'm okay with losing a bunch of games this year. Ideally, I'd like them to go, say, 4-12. As long as we aren't winning the Superbowl this year, and we're not, take the opportunity to clean house. Treat the year like a big pre-season. Sort out who your real players are and cut the others. That's why the Bills were fine with Schoebel retiring and why they had no interest in extending TO's stay. Neither was the future, so all either would have done for a season or maybe two is stop someone else from developing.

Second, I'm glad they gave Trent this last opportunity this year. He showed flashes of competence as a rookie. Preseason had me hopeful. I wanted him to succeed and thought he might (I'm a slow learner and prone to giving second chances). So I'm glad they gave him this chance. Two games into the real season, it's clear he'll never be The Guy. But that's hard to see without live bullets in real games. So we wasted a few games on him this year. Big deal. In the big scheme, that doesn't mean much. Fitzpatrick is a guy I like (I love smart guys and he went to Harvard. But then I hoped for Jauron for the same reason. Too bad his smarts didn't give him football smarts). Fitzpatrick's not going to be our savior, although he might make a decent second stringer, a la Frank Reich.

I agree with the 4th down analysis above. And I do think this move is good for motivating the rest of the players. Jauron would never have cut Trent like this. To me, it speaks well of Gailey that he both gave Trent the opportunity and that he pulled the rug out from under him in a hurry when he tasted the pudding (to mix a metaphor or two).

Trent Edwards proved his lack of worth last season. Gailey could/should have seen that on film. Tackle and quarterback needed to be priorities this offseason and neither positions were addressed. This move is too little, too late. Gailey and Nix do not deserve to be patted on the back for this. This is the reprocussion from a poor decision made in training camp. On another note, Tom Modrak is about as incompetant as a scout can get. Draft and Draft we miss the boat. I will spare you the list of weak players that he drafted and the even longer list of solid talent that he left on the board. You can say heinsight is 20/20 however good scouts have 20/20 foresight, which this joker clearly does not. The biggest problem with the Bills is the owner.

...not doing more to address the offensive tackle position is really a mystery. The team would have been better with Lynch and Jackson running the ball behind an improved line, with Fitz.. at qb. (Seemed like they were on track drafting Wood, Levitre, signing Hangartner...then..poof...nothing this offseason.)

Gailey stressed coming out of the optional practices that you needed to name a starter to get him the reps. Edwards was the best 'practice qb', and won the job.

Although it hurts to say it, when you saw Brady scramble for that one first down, and do the arm motion for a first down, you realize he's got talent, and he's also the most driven player on the field. Watch a 1000 games of Edwards at qb, and you'd never see that once.
