Save Lloyd (and Eat Lots of Tacos)!!

Save Lloyd (and Eat Lots of Tacos)!!
It was just three short weeks ago that we trumpeted the arrival of real Mexican food in Buffalo, provided to lucky downtown workers every day at the corner of Mohawk and Main by Lloyd.

Lloyd is Buffalo's first and only taco truck, and for the first few weeks, the Boys of Lloyd worked through the glitches and hitches of equipment issues, unexpected snaking lines of eager customers and the heat of this crazy summer. Passionate testimonials from rabid taco fans popped up all over their Facebook page and elsewhere. The television stations taped us as we happily lined up, waiting for a chance to shout out our orders for saucy braised beef tacos served with crisp slices of cabbage, cheese and fresh-squeezed lime, or pork, shredded and topped with tangy tomatillo sauce. Served in warm corn tortillas (doubled-up, just like they oughta be) they made waiting outside in the sweltering heat for a cheap, fast lunch a price well worth paying (again and again).

Lloyd had just begin to hit their stride, and visions of a fleet of taco trucks visiting office parks and a corner near you were popping up in the minds of all who thought that Buffalo's extreme deficit of real Mexican food was finally drawing to a close.

And then the engine blew.

IMG_2742.jpgIt could happen to anyone. You can't just find a taco truck anywhere, you have to ship it in with the only guarantee of quality being someone's best guess. And you can't just find a taco truck engine anywhere, either. The young entrepreneurs behind Lloyd have poured their heart, soul and savings into the Lloyd project. So here we are, unabashedly asking you to

Save Lloyd.

We, the taco lovers of WNY, ask that you step forward and endure the hardship of All You Can Eat Tacos as we try to Save Lloyd. For one night only, a mere $20 will fetch you the aforementioned tacos in an "All You Can Eat" quantity. Samples of Lloyd's super secret, not-yet-available churros (with Mexican chocolate dipping sauce) will be available as well, not to mention fresh grilled and seasoned corn. Plus, your efforts will insure that we Save Lloyd!

I'm sure the Lloyd Boys will rustle up some other fun stuff for the evening, so stay tuned to BR for an update. In the meantime, call your friends, Facebook share, Re-tweet, RSVP--

Come One, Come All and show the Boys of Lloyd and their killer tacos a little Buffalove!

Wouldn't a NAPA Auto Parts Store be a better location to hold this event?

All 110 pounds of me looks forward to these all you can eat tacos! I got the Facebook invite and already passed it along to some friends. We all waited in line for tacos the first week they opened and we planned to go back this week, but heard the news about the truck. I loved the food, so that's enough for me -- but it helps that these guys are super nice and have a passion for bringing REAL street food to Buffalo, which I've been waiting for! Best of luck to the Lloyd guys. Hope I get to meet the Chefs on Fri.

Why do they need an engine, its not like the city will allow then to actually drive around and sell tacos. On a serious note that does suck, i'll def try and make it for dinner Fri if possible.

an engine can be had for that truck cheap. It looks like an older GM. I don't really know why the article stated you can't just find an engine anywhere. Yes yes you can. Worst case scenario they could buy a long or short block crate motor but I'm sure they can find a salvagable engine in one of the many junk yars in the area.

work out a deal with a friendly tow truck driver. have the tow truck take Lloyd to his location in the morning and then tow him back in the evening. pay the tow truck driver in tacos. done...

This is serious question - wouldn't an insurance claim cover this?

This was Camerons Idea.

Yeah, I don't see exactly how this could be so rare? What is so special about a "taco truck"? Isn't it just a delivery van with a roll-up side window and some mobile kitchen equipment inside it?

Yes, JSmith. Yet we still have only one. Most who have had this idea in the past have not managed to survive the permitting process (some give up, some leave town, some plot for revenge). Lloyd is the first case of perseverance and compromise. Hence our effort to support them. Plus, they have great tacos.

Oh, I was just referring to Sweet Lincolns Mullets comment about the rarity of the engine itself (I guess I didn't hit reply like I thought I did). I mean, won't any truck engine do, or are there specifically "taco truck engines" that are not interchangeable with regular engines? I do understand the significance of having a mobile food vendor in Buffalo beyond ice cream trucks.

I'm all in favor of more and better street food, and hope that the Lloyd folks overcome this setback and go on to thrive. Years ago, in Oxford, England, some classmates and I were walking home from a pub and stumbled upon a random doner kabob (basically a Turkish gyro) truck. There's something about these kinds of unpredictable little pleasures that make a city lively.

"taco truck engines" run on Unicorn farts, completely different than gas powered.

Just keeding!

Turkish Gyros sound good, I'd love to see more diverse food, kind of sick of hot dogs.

Also, google 'taco truck' and you may better understand the American street food phenom happening elsewhere. Taco trucks just happen to be the epitome of the movement, in some people's eyes, anyway.
