Olmsted Offers Sunday Horse and Carriage Rides

Olmsted Offers Sunday Horse and Carriage Rides
Starting this Sunday, along with Jazz at the Albright and Hoyt Lake (Gala Waters) boat rentals, Olmsted Parks Conservancy will be offering horse drawn carriage rides. The travel routes will be the various Olmsted Parkways (Lincoln Parkway, Soldiers Circle, Gates Circle, and Bidwell Parkway) as well as Delaware Park. Andrusz Carriage Service and Eden Carriage Company will be offering 15-minute rides from 1pm-5pm each and every Sunday at a cost of $25 (carriage holds up to four people).

The carriage rides are just one part of the growing list of activities being offered within park boundaries. "This is an opportunity to see Buffalo as it was seen during its period of historical significance 1870-1930," said Rachel Lithgow, VP Institutional Advancement for the Olmsted Parks Conservancy. "It's a fabulous opportunity to capitalize on everything that Buffalo has to offer within the Delaware corridor. Imagine an entire Sunday dedicated to the family - listen to jazz, boat on the lake (11:00am-7:00pm), picnic in the park, and take a carriage ride down one of the parkways... does it get any better than that?"

I give it a month until some animal rights group starts protesting the treatment of these horses or some resident of Lincoln Parkway complains about the smell coming from these animals--does anyone remember what happened when Kramer fed his horse Rusty the Beefarino?!?

How would they be able to differentiate between the smell of the horse sh!t and the smell of Hoyt Lake?

ReginaldQMerriweatherIV certainly has class...he really does raise the intellectual bar with his unique way of saying things. One can only wonder if he communicates the same way without marijuana as with.

My guess is ReginaldQMerriweatherIV would get great amusement from giving the horses a drink of Hoyt Lake on a hot day so the passengers get a spray from the disentary that would result (oh thats such an unsightly image...me sorry).

that's funny.

'A spray of the disentary[sic]' is what most of your posts look like.

There are animal rights groups that are outraged about these carriage rides in Central Park. I am certain that there will be people protesting in WNY. This is from Central Park's website:

The protest against horse-drawn-carriage rides occurred as the City Council gets ready to consider a ban on the tourist attraction.

"You can't have horse-drawn carriages in New York City without the public safety issues and the inherent animal cruelty issues," said Edita Birnkrant, a spokeswoman for Friends of Animals.

She pointed out that horses went to work in a snowstorm last month, and one slipped on an icy street.

Animal welfare advocates rallied in the frigid weather, shouting, "Shame on you!" at the crowd of tourists lined up for rides.

The Council is set to debate a bill later this month that would shut down the industry.

This is an awesome idea!!!

Absolutely awesome!!! Perfect for romantic couples, weddings and visitors alike.

Who wouldnt love to arrive and leave the church in a carriage?

They might want to embellish it alittle by offering it a few sundays at South Park, Humboldt (Kings) Park to name a few.

BTW, what ever happened to putting the boats back on Hoyt Lake and rebuilding some of the Calvert Vaux structures.

This is such a horrible string of comments, especially the diarrhea coming from JohnQ.

$25 for a 15 minute horse ride around an area already so easily walkable. I think they'd get a better response with a more reasonable price. $25 bucks seems steep for what's being offered.
