The Great 24-Hour Mural-Thon

The Great 24-Hour Mural-Thon
It's a celebration of the business and arts communities that have been working towards making Black Rock a special place. It's a project that will shed light on the history of a tight-knit community. Leave it to Marcus L. Wise of 464 Gallery and Marissa Lahner, two members of Emerging Leaders in the Arts (ELAB - Buffalo Chapter), to dream up a mural project that will capture the imaginations of the community, while providing creative people with high profile public canvases upon which to paint.

Sponsored by the Grant-Amherst Business Association, the mural-thon is scheduled to take place starting on Friday, July 30th at 9pm and will continue through the night, on to the next day and into the following night. The goal is to totally complete the pre-designed mural in that time span. The first part of the mural has already been started - the goal for the event is to complete the upper part of the design project. Organizers will be providing volunteers with refreshments, music and a place to doze off if necessary. If you would like to participate in the event, or help to paint the lower portions of the artwork prior to the arrival of the scaffolding on the 30th, stop into 464 Gallery on Amherst Street or send an email to Marissa.

Lot's of good things happening along Amherst St. The business district is improving and even the vacant storefronts have been spruced up to attract tenants. I think this street offers a great alternative to the high rents of Elmwood or Hertel and will continue to attract new business.

SO EXCITED to see this building occupied again. I moved to Black Rock last year and love my area but I've spent a lot of time in the Grant-Amherst area the entire time I've lived in the city (nearly ten years now) and it's truly awesome to see all the positive change in that time. This is especially true of the many previously empty store fronts that have become business occupents recently. I would hate to see any of this working class area gentrify but I really have to predict this will be an up and coming place in the next ten years between all of the community and councilman's work to improve the neighborhoods and the low prices on some really great houses.
