Support the University District this Summer
Just one week prior to the renowned Garden Walk, a smaller yet very important garden walk is taking place in the University District. We have seen what garden walks have done for different communities, and if there is a community out there that would love to see you arrive to its doorstep, it's the University District. Thankfully, there is finally a tie between all of these gardening events in the form of the National Garden Festival.

Join your friends in the University District each Saturday for a Community Farmers Market, or make a point to catch an outdoor movie (Wednesdays in July and August) at the UB on the Green Outdoor Summer Movie Series. Don't forget about the family friendly UB on the Green Performance Series established to promote the city's talented musicians while creating yet another outdoor music venue.

Finally, take the time to visit some of the best gardens around, this Saturday, July 17th from 11am to 4pm - visit this website for all of the details. University District supporters are working hard to attract your attention - please try to make it to one of these special events this summer!!!

The university district needs the same thing that Amherst and downtown have attracted: JOBS!

Yes it needs the light rail extension to Amherst.

But bigger picture is that the University District needs a local employment base, a commercial office park. Preferably filled with businesses that complement the professional degress located at the South Campus.

It's amazing the sort of work can be accomplished when you have a group of dedicated residents and volunteers. I encourage everyone to check out the median on Minnesota Ave. I remember a few years ago when it was nothing more than an unusable jungle of weeds and neighborhood trash depository. Now, with residents taking ownership of the median, it has become a beautiful centerpiece of flowers, shrubs, and trees for some of the largest and arguably nicest homes in the University Heights. It's a small reminder of the quality neighborhood the Heights once was... and can be again.
