PBA Education Campaign: Bike to the Bridge

PBA Education Campaign: Bike to the Bridge
One of the great assets we have here in Western New York is our close proximity to Canada. For cyclists this means access to over 85 miles (140 km) of recreational trails the stretches along the Niagara River and out to the Welland Canal along the Friendship Trail connecting us to Ontario's urban areas, the Niagara Escarpment, wine country and beaches through the Greater Niagara Circle Route (www.regional.niagara.on.ca/gnrc). The challenge for us Buffalonians is often crossing the bridge as a cyclist - it is often confusing and challenging.

As a start to alleviate this situation, the Public Bridge Authority launched the Bike to the Bridge initiative aimed at educating bicyclists and pedestrians on proper crossing procedures at the Peace Bridge facility. The campaign is focused on providing public outreach and information distribution which includes a dedicated webpage, an instructional web video on how to cross by bicycle, downloadable maps and pamphlets with travel routes, a complete online listing of necessary identification requirements, several new road and sidewalk signs, as well as reference materials for customs agencies.

While this represents an excellent first step, much more could and should be done and the PBA has provided us with an opportunity to begin this dialogue. So we want to hear from you. What has your experience been crossing the Peace Bridge by bicycle? What improvements would you recommend to make the crossing safe and enjoyable?

Green Options Buffalo will compile your comments and utilize this forum to develop a set of recommendations for the PBA. This will provide input into the next steps for making bicycling our international crossing safe and efficient.

A new bridge would be a first good step.

I have crossed the Peace Bridge by bicycle a number of times, but I still find this new webpage helpful. Thanks to everyone involved for their efforts.

On a related note: might Buffalo Rising follow up on this week's Greenway Commission news? I suspect that many other cyclists would like to hear more about this "dilution" concern.

Does anyone else find crossing to Canada to take longer and the questions to be more in depth since they made passports required? I thought one of the selling points of the passport requirement was shorter wait times and fewer questions? I find it somewhat of a hassle to go through customs lately which is a shame as I would visit Canada more if it was not such an annoyance.

Bicycling over the bridge bypasses much of the wait caused by traffic jams. That's a big positive I hope some of you will consider the next time you're headed for Canadian Beaches.

i was about to say the same thing but then i thought about the customs process. if it is more rigorous than it used to be, like buffaluv says (and i agree), then there are probably no time savings to be had by being on two wheels instead of four.

in fact, it used to be that people on bikes got grilled more than people in cars, because bikes are not trackable the way motor vehicles are. someone on a bike really -can- disappear into a county.

which gets back to the supposed need for bridge expansion. the choke point is not the number of lanes, it is the number of inspection booths.
