Guerrilla Gardening SWAT Team Strikes!

Guerrilla Gardening SWAT Team Strikes!
Just the other day I was thinking about Buffalo's Guerrilla Gardeners - the group has certainly kept an ultra-low profile. As I was thinking about how it might be time to re-form the group (tough to do when I don't know who they are), I received an email from a member of a pseudo Guerrilla Gardener crack squad (no, not that type of crack) that was interested in recruiting volunteers for a planting at the Inner Harbor this Sunday.

Although the group is not officially considered 'guerrilla' in nature, they do resemble the underground concept in many ways. It's a volunteer effort that coincides with events such as the National Garden Festival. Interested gardeners are being asked to dedicate their time and expertise to one of the city's most coveted districts - a waterfront parcel that is in need of some green and flowers. From one of the 'organizers':

"I am organizing a volunteer work project for this weekend - Sunday, July 11. We will be weeding and doing some general gardening around the Buffalo Naval and Military Park. If anyone is looking for something to do before they head to The Taste of Buffalo, we would welcome the help from 9:00am to noon. We're more like a guerrilla gardening SWAT team. We will be represented by a new Rotaract Club (offshoot of Buffalo Rotary Club - this is a service club for ages 18 - 30), vested waterfront residents, and coerced family and friends. The "party" will begin in the big red museum building. BYOT - Bring your own tools!"

One idea.. how about the "Welcome to Buffalo" singage visible to the right before the first overpass while heading north bound on the I-190 into Buffalo. Home of Olmsted park system is on this signage as well; let's just say the landscaping around this sign does not do this designation justice.

Well, once again I try to see a bigger picture.

I applaud the gardeners but I see a different focus.

Somehow I look at Canalside and I immediately want to know how the Waterfront Village and LaSalle Park can be connected.

Somehow I look at Canalside and I immediately want to know how the DL&W/Cobblestone districts can be connected.

Somehow I look at Canalside and I immediately think about Niagara Street as being the gateway entrance from the Peace Bridge to downtown.

Trees and plants from the Gardeners can set the stage for a master plan to connect these areas.

One last suggestion for BuffaloRising technology buffs: Replacing those high arch thruway lights is something everyone agrees as beneficial for the community but now recent cost studies have shown that LED lighting results in a net cost savings significant enough for cities to replace their urban lighting.

Technology buffs would be wise to use LED cost savings to replace their community lighting with lighting that will add value to their properties.

I love this movement, too. I do remember the illustrious Phantom Gardeners in the '80's who would go deep into the West Side (before it was chic) at 11pm and plant the heck out of a corner (in the dark). Out of curiousity, how "Guerrilla" can one be at 9am?

Still LOVE the idea of green anarchy.

The Japanese Gardens and the Garden Tours are in the Buffalo News. It seems a number of major national print media are doing stories on our city. Particularly the Japanese Gardens.

While I am greatful for the Garden Tours, the Guerilla Gardeners and the Japanese Garden...it does raise the question of the historical gardens once present at Humboldt or King's Park and at South Park where the Lake and Botanical Gardens are located.

It seems a lost opportunity to keep postponing the restoration of both Olmsted Parks...especially when we are getting so much recognition.

as always, complain first, educate yourself later, if ever. have you even read the olmsted master plan?

It's more important for John to post a comment without actually composing thoughts. JohnQ should change his name to SpamQ

John, are you selling something? Is that why your comments are on every story and are all in the ballpark of 900 words.

Grad94, of course I read the Olmsted Plan. Im very saddened that so little of the plan has actually been executed. Perhaps your confusing my frustration that more is not being done for having not read it.

Infact, I called the Olmsted Conservatory and recommended that they open certain Parks like Riverside, Humboldt or King's Park, South Park, Front Park....to Farmers and Community Markets. They could then use the revenue to finance the master plan.

I have worked, volunteered and donated when I had the resources. You may dsagree with me but please do not question my sincerity for wanting to see Buffalo rise to the next tier in its potential.

We dont need to be a big city...we are an excellent midsize city and we are a very personable friendly city. I hope we never lose it as we try to grow our cultural and economic opportunities.

as we all know, they're restoring riverside park first. had they announced an mlk park restoration first, you'd whine that riverside is being neglected in favor of political correctness towards a predominantly black neighborhood.

Color me "Enthusiastic" only after seeing what's left of these planting attempts when 3 or 4 years have passed. Most are dead by that time. Let's see some late-night watering and fertilizing 'raids', along with educating the beloved public with info about why trees and greenery are good & should not be trampled and destroyed.

Doesn't stop you from raiding the patch of greenery with a watering can and fertilizer or from pulling a weed or two.
Quit with the hating and go do something about it!

I see the "Guerrilla" quality of this effort being helpful in places where Unions have halted the maintenance of our civic spaces. Volunteers ranging from the Botanical Gardens to The Boy Scouts of America have been kept from maintaining the front of the Rath Building downtown because of Union issues. I think this would be a terrific "Guerrilla" endeavor late on a Sunday evening...

How does one donate to this orginization given the fact they want to remain anonymous? I may have two beautiful Arborvitaes to donate if I can find a way to contact them. TY
