Devo Does Buffalo

Devo Does Buffalo
By: Mackenzie Lambert

Devolution:
the notion that a species can change into a more primitive form.

In light of recent times, you'd be hard-pressed to argue the opposite was occurring. On July 8th, punk/new wave legends Devo rocked the Town Ballroom as only Devo could.

Their new album, Something for Everybody, will likely be labeled as a "comeback" album, yet they never really left. While their last full studio album was Smooth Noodle Maps in 1990, they have released new tracks sporadically. Devo recorded the title track for the Jackie Chan action flick, Supercop, in 1996. They contributed "Huboon Stomp" for Chef Aid: The South Park album in 1998. In 2007, "Watch Us Work It" turned plenty of heads with its use in Dell television commercials. Many a listener was left realizing just how good a band like Devo can be.

Even in between single releases, the spirit of Devo lived on in their endeavors. Members of Devo founded Mutato Muzika, which produced music for such TV shows as Eureka, Big Love, Rugrats, and Pee-Wee's Playhouse. The company's film work includes Rushmore, Happy Gilmore, Mystery Men, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. That piano music in the background of those classic "I'm a Mac. And I'm a PC" commercials? Yeah, that's Mutato Muzika as well. Gerald Casale directed Devo-inspired music videos for the Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, and Rush.

DSCN0074.jpgThe audience was pumped for this concert. It had been 18 years since Devo took to the stage in Buffalo. Many an audience member wore the Energy Dome hats Devo sported in the classic music video for "Whip It." I even caught a glimpse of a man wearing the "Ken" hairpiece the band wore on the New Traditionalists album cover. Also, a youth was sporting a safety vest with the words "Don't Shoot! I'm a Man!" written on the back. I was in the presence of diehards. Around 8:30, the crowd was growing restless. At 9, the threat of chaos was looming. The opening video montage signaled Devo's imminent taking of the stage. The roof nearly blew when the band came on.

Right off the bat, they opened early with "Don't Shoot (I'm A Man)", "What We Do", "and "Fresh" off of Something for Everybody. They then proceeded to move through one Devo classic after another: "Whip It", "Girl U Want", their cover of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", "Uncontrollable Urge", "Mongoloid", "Jocko Homo", and "Peek-a-Boo!" You couldn't have asked for a better encore: "Freedom of Choice" and "Beautiful World."

The quality of musicianship on the part of Devo has been grossly underrated. Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale still have the pipes to sing as well as they did in the late 70s. Bob Mothersbaugh's guitar work has been criminally underrated on the part of music media. I would compare him to Steve Cropper. Bob Casale showed his music muscle by alternating between guitar and keyboards. But the real star, I would have to say, was Josh Freese on the drums. His Keith Moonian-like energy channeled itself into the other bandmates. Freese was integral, to say the least, to Devo's ability to put on a good show.

For a band that has inspired the likes of Fatboy Silm, Rammstein, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Weird Al Yankovic, Lady Gaga, Rage Against the Machine, and Nine Inch Nails, they can still put on one hell of a show. Their subversive, deadpan, cynical humor makes them more relevant today than they've ever been. They've been with us for over thirty years. We can only hope to get a few more out of them.

Lester, catch up. It's 2010. You're in 1983 still. We need you at least in the 2000's.

I meant "them". Louise, I know what year it is, but when you start having bad eggs like these guys it's bound to cause trouble. We'll see I guess

How are they bad eggs?!!? They all look like they're in their 40's. Is it because they were born about 20 years after you that makes them bad eggs? What planet am I on? Are they responsible for the oil spill or something, Lester?

Josh Freese stole the show??? Come on- terrible review, there could have been a drum machine up there and Devo would have still been awesome. This isn't some lame Weezer show McKenzie.

I think LesterCzepnakski is a joke name, and his posts must be hyperbole for laughs. That being said, the town Ballroom is seriously one of the worst venues i have ever seen concerts at- I saw Ween there a while back and it was so hot that people were dehydrating whether they were on the floor or not and the place had run out of bottled water, yet would not let people bring it in on their own. Even the band complained about it- and last night the same thing happened. The show was actually much shorter than other dates on the tour because it was just too hot. The owners should be reported to the building department or board of health on this - it's negligence.

The Czepnakski name is a proud one and I take offense to that.

I'm not sure what people want done about the issue of it being hot inside a room with 800+ people in it. The bar area in the front was relatively comfortable before the show and the theater area was actually cool before it filled up with people. The bottled water is reasonable priced and from what I saw last night they did not run out considering I bought a bottle on the way out the door. Also, looking at the other sets from this tour they all clock in at right around 80 minutes. The first photo I took last night is from 8:55 during "Don't Shoot", the last photo I took is from 10:13 during "Beautiful World", I'm not sure why you think they cut the set short because it was hot on stage.

good review and a great show, i totally agree. one quick note... that wasn't Josh Freese behind the kit. Though Josh is considered a member of Devo, his website confirms that he is not touring with them this summer due to a prior obligation to Weezer. I didn't catch the name of last night's drummer, but when the band announced his name... it didn't sound like 'Josh Freese.' Sounded like a 'Jeff something or other. Either way - dude's got talent!

I agree with the statements about the Town Ballroom. It was really deplorable in there and something does need to be done about the heat issue.

The gentlemen on the drums last night was Jeff Friedl. I apologize for the poor research on my part. Here's his wiki page:

I was at the show, and I'm really surprised to hear anyone complaining about the "heat". Given the record breaking temperatures outside, it was hardly outrageous that a packed show with probably 800 people get a little warm. I danced around a bit, got a little sweaty, and it was no big deal. I hanging out with a bunch of people that went after, and no one was complaining about the venue.

That aside, Devo absolutely killed it.

I had a great time at the show. It was my third time seeing them in the last five years and I think last night was by far the most fun I've had at a concert in a long time. I seriously considered making the drive down to Pittsburgh tonight for the show but prior dinner plans with the in-laws quickly put that idea to rest. There were a handful of songs that I would have loved to hear, "Through Being Cool" would be at the top of that list but it was a great set nonetheless. I take a little bit of issue with saying the drummer stole the show but I guess we all are drawn to different parts of the performance and we all take something different away from the show. Devo definitely brought it, I'm always impressed at the show they put on and last night was no exception, heat and all.
