Block by Block... Minnesota Avenue

Block by Block... Minnesota Avenue
By Darren Cotton:

While helping the residents of Minnesota Avenue prepare to unveil their newly landscaped median for the Capen Garden Walk yesterday morning I couldn't help but think of what a great story the transformation would make.  The effort was spearheaded by Yvonne Brown, who along with her husband, lead the recently reactivated Minnesota Block Club.

Unlike most of the block clubs that are members of the University Heights Collaborative, the Minnesota Block Club faces first hand the more serious repercussions of urban blight and abandonment through gang related violence and heavy drug trafficking.  However, a group of dedicated residents is turning this once forgotten street into a safer and much more attractive place to live.  I've attached a before and after snapshot of the median project (the 'after' was taken this morning and the 'before' was taken from Google maps).  The block club was able to tap into the City's Livable Communities Initiative fund to pay for the flowers and supplies.

I love this. University Heights has been called "on the brink". Stuff like this, even though it doesn't directly create wealth in the neighborhood, goes a long way to increase perception in the neighborhood...it shows people live there and care. Cheers to the Browns, who clearly know that once the dominos start falling, they are hard to stop.

I can't explain how encouraging it was being out on Minnesota Ave. this past Saturday. Residents and volunteers of all ages were out in force picking up garbage, raking lawns, pulling weeds, and trimming hedges to get the street looking top notch. I told one of the residents I thought I was on University Ave. and her eyes instantly lit up. She was out with her husband watering a portion of the median with a hose running back to her house. People walking/biking past volunteers would stop and thank them for all their hard work and for this beautiful addition to the neighborhood. It seems community involvement is truly infectious!

This article is sort of a back-handed compliment, in my opinion.
"...more serious repercussions of urban blight and abandonment through gang related violence and heavy drug trafficking."
The author just couldn't help but sensationalize the issues faced by University Heights, which, by the way are faced to some degree by most areas of the city. Why didn't you just call us the New East Side? The well deserved positive attention to Minnesota Avenue was undermined by painting a darker than truthful picture of Minnesota Avenue and therefore University Heights. This story would have spoken clearly for itself without the sensationalism.

I would just like to clarify (this was a quick write-up accompanying the pictures I emailed to Newell) that what I meant when I said "more serious repercussions" is that most streets in the Heights (Heath, Highgate, Englewood, etc.) experience things like absentee landlords and perhaps a few random acts of vandalism or petty crime, but unfortunately residents of Minnesota Ave. have had to face more serious threats to their neighborhood's safety. Thus, I was just trying to highlight the fact that the Minnesota Block Club faces challenges that many in the Heights are lucky enough not to, and have done so in an outstanding manner. I've lived in the Heights for 3 years and love it, so please don't take it as a "back-handed compliment."
