Taste of Buffalo's Right Around the Corner

Taste of Buffalo’s Right Around the Corner
Next weekend the streets of Downtown Buffalo will be filled with people, tents, trailers and the scent of good food as nearly 400,000 enjoy the flavor of our region at the annual Taste of Buffalo. It may surprise some of you to know that this homegrown event is now the largest two-day food festival in the country and many of those 400,000 visitors won't be from Erie County at all, but rather folks traveling from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Ontario and other parts of the country.

This year, over 50 restaurants will serve up various tasty tidbits to the crowd. A team of judges will award the restaurants with the best eats of the event, a list that occasionally puts a small restaurant no one has ever really heard of on the map. Remember a few years ago when a little East Side restaurant called Ms. Goodies and their sandwich, the "Junkyard Dog", made headlines? Of course, the best way to enjoy the festival is to get down there and do a little sampling yourself. We're looking forward to tasting favorites from year's past, and also trying new items.

Also popular are the beer tents, wine samples and live music. You can see the full schedule of bands here.

Buffalo Rising was happy to assist the Taste with assembling a full schedule for the Culinary Theatre, located in the parking lot of New Era Cap. Demonstrations run all day Saturday and Sunday, with chefs from the Seneca Niagara and Seneca Allegany Casino, Chef Nutrition himself, Obviously Avi Altman, promoting his new healthy eating cookbook, the uber pastry chef Zilly Rosen of Zillycakes will be on hand on Sunday, and on Saturday, Kevin Gardner of Five Points Bakery will demonstrate how his bakery mills their own flour and prepares classic whole wheat bread. Chef Kate Elliott of Juniper will prepare smoked ratatouille with polenta, and The Steer's new chef, Robert Mayerat will demonstrate a classic shrimp and clam bake. Restaurateur Joanna DiGiulio will also make an appearance, and Chef Chris Dorsaneo from Buffalo's first taco truck, (the soon-to-be-open Lloyd) will provide us with a preview of his braised beef tacos.

Last but not least, for those of you who missed one of Nickel City Chef's twelve bouts, you can catch them on Saturday or Sunday as they challenge each other in a culinary competition unlike anything the Taste has ever seen. Better yet, this time the judges are lucky folks pulled from the audience--will one of them be you? The full schedule is here.

With parking being a little crazy, we'd suggest you take the metro rail down from one of the park and rides located on Main Street. It's affordable and simple enough to do.

During the weekend of the Taste, we'll have a post up where attendees can leave comments about their favorite (and not so favorite) bites. We hope you'll log on and leave your recommendations!

Not only does this city offer so much for the palette, you can dine well without going into debt.

Taste of Buffalo is the worst festival ever. The food is more expensive than if you simply went to the restaurant and bought it.

Have to agree DuRaS, with a family of six the TOB is well out of our budget range especially considering how much food boys can consume.

So all that makes it the "worst festival ever"? Between you and Fred your arguments are lame. You can get something for as little as $3; and no one told you to have four kids. Usually the more mouths to feed costs more wherever you go. Leave the kids home.

Never said it was the worse festival, just said it's expensive
And I didn't ask your opinion on population control either.
The few times I've gone I've enjoyed it, but $4 for a hot dog is a bit of price gouging.

no ****, Duras. That's not the point of the festival.

The point of the festival is to get people to sample the food, and if people can't afford it, they won't

If I was a restaurant owner I'd rather lose a few cents giving out samples at Taste of Buffalo and possibly win loyal customers than have those potential customers walk by my booth because I'm charging too much for a taste.

The vendors all charge the same price

Yes, I get that. I'm saying that if I owned a restaurant, I'd rather serve samples to more potential customers and lose a few cents on each one than serve fewer people and break even for the weekend. Isn't that the whole point of a restaurant participating - exposing as many people as possible to their food, especially in a crowd that is probably more likely to dine out than general population?

I could very well be wrong about why restaurants participate. Maybe they're in it to make a few bucks for the weekend and don't care about attracting new business.

My favorite street food is at the Erie County Fair. And that's just a mere 6 weeks away from today! (Beginning August 11th) I do love the Taste of Buffalo too when the weather is cooperative. Sometimes the sun heats up the pavement so hot, that the only thing I can think about having to eat is something frozen. (Sangria slushies may not be exactly classy, but they are pretty refreshing!)

Considering the weather of this summer i doubt you have to worry about the sun heating the pavement.

$4 is too expensive? I don't think anything on the menu costs more than 8 tickets =$4. Sure portions aren't enormous but it's a 'Taste'

If you use this event like it's supposed to be it's fairly affordable. Just don't go on a completely empty stomach. For me it's all about trying things I wouldn't spend $20 trying.

I have mix feelings about all the Restaurants from outside Buffalo, I love the Dino BBQ from Roch/Syr but Applebees?

In my opinion this isn't even top 10 festival in WNY but that's mostly because we have so many great summer fests.

So, I need to eat a meal before going to a festival that focuses on food?

Well don't skip lunch before you go around dinnertime. I wouldn't go full either but I try not to go to these things starving.

They also have a ton of desserts and snacks, so you don't even have to have an entree.

You would be correct:
"More than 200 culinary specialties are served by WNY's best restaurants. All items are priced between $1.00 and $4.00."

I think the problem also lies with our gluttonous society where it becomes expensive to go to the Taste because unless people eat just shy of vomiting, thus costing alot of money, they won't be happy.

Not a fan. It has crowds worse than the Allentown art festival and it cost a single person $30+ to get enough food to make it partial worth it. Not to mention it's always hot.

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

How much food do you eat, Page? It takes thirty dollars worth of food to make it 'partially' worth it? I think you have other problems than the price of the TOB.

"Not to mention it's always hot"

So I take it between June and September you're a recluse? Better not travel to the South or you may melt.

Just as a base value for $30 you can get 15 slices of Pizza, or 5 Louie's foot-longs and 3 sweet potato fries, or 2 JYDs from Ms. Goodies plus 2 funnel cakes + 2 banana suprises + 2 corns and have change.

Just saying.

So the 30$ may have been a little of an overestimate but not by much. Last time I was there, the portions were small and once you add in beverages it adds up fast.

And yes, it's too hot. If the weather is anything like they are predicting for the 4th, standing in a crowd in 85+ will be my idea of hell

I can't stand the heat either. But when I lived in the South it was wearing long sleeves and pants and carrying a ton of gear playing Army in the woods. So the hottest Buffalo can get seems silly compared to that.

Some of these gripes are legit. Last year there was a long wait to even purchase tickets and serious bottlenecks throughout the streets. Not to mention the fact that most of the food was prepared hours before and was sitting in warming stations. It sounds better in theory than in practice...But hey, I'm glad others enjoy it.

UGHHHH... I hate the Taste of Buffalo. Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded. ;)
