Outer Harbor Happenings: Coast Guard Property

Outer Harbor Happenings: Coast Guard Property
Not since February of '08 (see post with rendering) had I heard anything about partial Coast Guard land being designated for public park space - that is until this weekend. It looks like bids went out a month ago to start the process of consolidation Coast Guard facilities to a designated part of the property away from the Erie Basin Marina side (to the break wall side of the property).

Work could begin as early as this summer. That means that the public will have access to a prime waterfront parcel of land, which until now had only been designated as Federal access.

The last I had heard was that plans had been delayed due to further Outer Harbor interest by the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation. Whether this will be part of a joint initiative is unclear - what is clear is that bids have gone out and the project is moving forward.

I so hope that rendering from the original post comes to reality. The current state is so cluttered with small ugly buildings.

ok my first thought is demolish the municipal housing freeloaders with waterfront views and free parking, and management association that stole millions in severance. (No as a taxpayer I will never forget that...and will scream that in the ear of the mayor and common council).

ok my second thought is that while its nice that we are getting more land....there is a bigger potential and that federal and state funding for dredging.

DREDGING THE BUFFALO RIVER (COULD REMOVE ALOT OF CONTAMINANTS) AND DREDGING THE HARBOR COULD ADD BEACHES AND PARK LAND BOTH THE OUTER HARBOR AND LASALLE PARKS.

Land people currently want reserved for park could be built upon while dredging creates the new parkland.

Anyone know when the next scheduled dredging is?

Great News! From the description in this post it sounds like the plans have changed from the original rendering. Any new renderings available?

Good to hear. I sent an email on this subject to Higgins and the ECHDC a couple of weeks ago and received no response. I took that as bad news until I saw this article.

Build a beach here. The water is much cleaner here compared to Emerald Beach.

I'm glad this was posted because I was walking around Times Beach yesterday. I have never been there before.

The nature preserve is gorgeous! And the land next to the preserve is untouched, save for a handful of fishermen, and prime for development.

I was telling my dad that the grain elevators in the background would create a great backdrop for an outdoor movie theatre.

If they could clean up the water it would be an excellent beach for city residents. I live in the southtowns where I have taken the many swimming beaches for granted. I can see Times Beach and the land adjacent providing a pleasurable escape for city residents not unlike Bennett Beach in Angola.

As for access to the outer harbor, why is another bridge necessary?
