Make Time For Mezza

Make Time For Mezza
Every time I mention to someone that a new restaurant has opened in the old Elmwood Soda Bar location they inevitably say something along the lines of, "That place is jinxed." My answer to the statement is always, "The place isn't jinxed - the problem is the past concepts have never hit the mark." It really is true. I can't remember ever immediately wanting to go back for a second meal after eating at any of the past restaurants that set up shop there. With Mezza it's different.

First of all, I think that Mezza is going to appeal to the people who liked Sahara Grill... or who wanted to like it - there's even a hubbly bubbly counter lined with hookahs. Then there are the people who miss having the Falafel Bar on Elmwood - Mezza offers similar styles of food and fills the falafel void on the street. Mezza also offers a ton of food options to choose from - options that might sound like the same ol' same ol', but they're not. Take my wrap filled with hummus and tabouleh for example (see photo). It was unlike anything that I expected. The lemon dressing and olive oil were plentiful, yet the wrap never got soggy. It was loaded with parsley, though somehow it didn't overwhelm the rest of the flavors. The ingredients were super fresh, very tasty and filling enough that I was 100% satisfied after lunch. Our waitress was friendly and attentive and helped us to pick our dishes. She also returned tableside a number of times for water refills and to check on us. When we narrowed down our lunch selections and asked her to decide for us, she didn't hesitate one second before telling us her favorite of the two that we were considering. That, to me, is what a good waitress should do instead of hemming hawing about how all the meals are equally enjoyable.

It's good to see the patio consistently filled with patrons. From what I understand, dinnertime has been busier than lunch, though the lunch crowd has been consistent. Unfortunately it rained during our excursion so we sat inside, which was clean, bright and open. If I could have suggested anything to make the lunch better, I would have wanted to hear some soft traditional Lebanese music playing in the background. Sometimes that can warm a place up just a bit. A few overgrown plants wouldn't hurt either. Oh, and scrap the enviro-unfriendly Styrofoam take-home containers. What was warming was the total amount of the bill. For two wraps and an iced tea (with a refill) the lunch came to $15. That's not bad considering the food, the service and the atmosphere. When it comes to food, these guys don't 'mezza round'.

I'd like to echo most sentiments, beside the terrible pun.

After hearing about the place on BRO, and seeing it open, my girlfriend and I checked it out a couple weeks ago, just days after opening. Though there were a couple "just opened" mistakes, the food was delicious and we both also wanted to immediately return. For some reason, we just felt a warmth from the people there and discussed how we hoped that they are successful, because they deserve to be.

Truly a great addition that I know I'll be at again this summer.

I was excited about this place opening!

That said, I stopped to try it with 2 family members this past Sunday at 12:30pm. It looked like they were just opening (weird, but they are new). Anyway, when I asked the person outside setting up if they were open for lunch he simply said "NO". So, I asked if they would be, and he said "yes". So, I asked yet again . . . what time? He said "1:00". That was it. It was like torture to get the information.

This is what I call terrible service, and it makes me rethink wanting to give them my business. There are a lot of reasons I like WNY. Good customer service is not one of them; time after time, especially in restaurants, it's just terrible. What gives?

WNY is not known for customer service. So many in WNY have lowered their expectations in terms of fashion, style, service, technology, and entertainment. Too many people either don't care or don't have enough self-respect to bother. Where else in this country can you get away with wearing 1990s carrot jeans and a hairstyle that hasn't changed since Reagan's first term.

Some of the worst restaurant and bar service that I have had has been in Buffalo.

i'm not so sure about your assessment....
i get to travel up and down the east coast for work and i do my best to search out local restaurants each time.

i typically find the food and service in buffalo to be far better then most other places.

i ate at B. Smiths and Sag Harbor, NY... very high end, very uninspired food and sad service. wine thief puts them to shame.

the next day i ate at 52 main street, the place to be seen in southamptons for locals and celebs. the food SUCKED and the service was pathetic. rude, unmannered kids. i'll take aroma, toro or club 31 any day of the week for food or service over this way over priced place.

i did find a wonderful thai restaurant in sag harbor on my last day... very very good food and the service couldn't be beat. i think it was called sen.

all in all... compared to most places i've seen along the east coast. buffalo holds its own.

Oh please. I've eaten and drank at restaurants and bars around the country. Bad service is hardly limited to just Buffalo. Saying that Buffalo is home to some of the worst service in the country just sounds stupid. Unfortunately these days, it's pretty easy to find bad service just about anywhere. At least here, you're not paying an arm and a leg for your meal AND bad service.

And as a former server, when you do receive good service, remember to show your appreciation. Believe me, it is MUCH appreciated and helps keep that good service coming!

Steel - Grow up! I didn't say anything about crack whores or zubaz pants. What I did say was that service in Buffalo is much worse than in many other places I have stayed. I was recently in Nashville and Memphis for a couple of weeks. Customer service at almost every restaurant and hotel was exceptional. The same is true for my recent trip to Austin. I have not been 'wowed' with service in Buffalo for quite some time. I am not saying that poor service is limited to Buffalo, or that it is the worst in the country, just that it is bad and needs to improve. Unfortunately, too many in Buffalo feel that poor service and rude staff are acceptable.

I know you are full of BS when you throw Nashville and Memphis above Buffalo. I lived in Nashville for 5 years, and their service is not better, besides the fact that they will accommodate you by splitting up checks everything else was considerably worse. Also the food in Nashville doesn't come close to what we offer here (with the exception of Tex-Mex). My few trips to Memphis left me with the same impression as well.

When it comes to Customer Service, I can only recall two different restaurants in this city where I has bad service (one of them was at 'Off the Wall'- now closed, the other is still open, so I wont say it's name). But, over all I haven't noticed bad service being a norm here and I used to live in NYC. When it comes to fashion and culture here, I some what agree. I do notice more plain Jane's and hillbilly attire than anything else. But, I have noticed MORE trendy people around the city (downtown, elmwood, allentown, etc.) than I did just a few years ago, including Fashion Shows which was a rare event here not too long ago. People's attitude towards fashion and culture here still seem to be clueless, but maby it's because they are not exposed to it. Have you seen our downtown? Where are the fashion billboards? Trendy Retailers? (besides Elmwood, I'm talking about DOWNTOWN), We don't even have an anchor store downtown. And we may just end up with a Bass Pro as the only Anchor (like we really need a hunting store as our downtown Anchor? lol), we don't have the exposure here to get the locals up to date on what's 'IN', and out of the 80's/90's attire and mind set.

Let me provide you with a few examples of poor service:

- Saigon Red's: ate there a few times in the fall, waitress came by for drink orders about 5 minutes after we sat down, when my friend asked her about a menu selection she replied "I don't know, check the menu or order something else". The check arrived about 10 minutes after we finished eating, glasses were empty on the table for most of the meal. Waitress was inattentive, rude, and unresponsive.

- Morrissey's: I have been there a few times, it generally takes about 40 minutes to get my meal. Standing at the bar, it will take about 5 minutes for the bartender to acknowledge that I am there, then a few more minutes to respond. Food is good and I have to say that they are improving, but they have a long way to go.

- TORO!: Slow, slow, slow, slow, slow and inattentive wait staff. Food that should have been warm was cold when it came out. We were charged for two dishes that never arrived, manager was apologetic and helpful.

- La Dolce Vita: The host left us at the door while he talked with his friends. He rushed us to a table, then went back to his friends without alerting the waitress. It took almost 10 minutes for the waitress to arrive, and she was curt and snotty with us when she finally got there. Food was great, bt service was lacking.

I have had similar experiences at Kostas, Mother's, and a number of other places. This is what I base my judgements on.

I know you state you have eaten there a few times, but it was called "'Shanghai' Reds". I was one of the few that actually had good food and service at this place. Aside from Dolce Vita, I question your experiences at the other places, which I have eat at multiple times and never had anything but fine service, especially at Mother's.

I've had mediocre service at Mothers, as well. They've become less consistent over the past few years.

I have always had great service each visit to Mothers, foodwise however I have noticed over the last year or so that the nightly menu has become the same old uninspired plates, and the quality has taken a dip.

I have had poor service and bad food in at least 15 Chicago restaurants. That means that service is poor here too. I never thought of it that way before. Chicago and Buffalo both suck beyond belief.

I would like to apologize to all BRO readers for making a negative and disparaging remark about our restaurants. I would also like to add that I have never eaten at Mezza, so I cannot judge their service.

I understand that poor service is pervasive throughout America, I am sorry to have made these remarks about Buffalo. I meant to say that I have only had poor service in the bland suburbs in restaurants that are not built to the curb.

I think you have "Dan" disease. That is a disorder where negative things that are commonplace all over seem to be disproportionately present in Buffalo. If you have this ailment, bad restaurant service, vinyl siding, iron porch railings, bubble awnings, and other common inconveniences will appear to only exist within Buffalo city limits.

Great location for a resturant but also is the kiss of death for anyone who decides to open a business there, I give it till winter and they will be closed...

Well, the Elmwood Soda Bar was there for something like three or four decades. Since it closed, the building has been mostly vacant, with occasional use by a few restaurants that I don't think lasted more than a year each. So it doesn't surprise me that the building should be identified by its longest-running and to date most remembered tenant.

The service was fine. I travel quite a lot. Good and bad service is everywhere.

I like garlic - but it was too much. And way too much salt. I will give it one more try. The Hookas on the patio may be cute but are a deterrent. I would never eat on the patio - and I east outside at every opportunity.

you have a point. outdoor patios are now the domain of smokers, and if the place has open windows, staying inside does not keep smoke stinking up your meal.

having said that, i've been to mezza twice and have been very pleased with the food. i never warmed up to falafel bar; too bland. hummus should not puddle like pancake batter.

As my name implies, I hate falafel. Do I hate falafel, the food? No. I hate Falafel Bar. The mistreatment and unorthodox management that I have witnessed at that establishment is ghastly. It is only a matter of time that Falafel Bar closes its doors for good, and I bask in the glory of that day.

The thing with the service industry in Buffalo is it is not considered a "professional" way to earn a living. We are not a serious travel and liesure location like bigger markets so we have a "localized" attemped at polished customer service without any real professional standards to measure up to. The people in the service industry here are nice enough but just not well trained or committed to being professionals. If they get fired or quit they can just pop up somewhere else. Mediocrity is not really held against you in Buffalo and just being "good" is revered here, sometimes for years and years. There are some pretty good restaurants here but almost all lack the professional edge that is neccessary to compete at the top of the service sector in major markets. With all that being said I think Buffalo actually overachieves slightly in our choices of dining options, but not by much.

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

I believe this is true. I have lived in cities where there are servers who are treated like celebrities among the food & wine crowd. If some servers decide to move from one restaurant to another, half of the regular diners will move with them, partly because the foodies know that the particular servers wouldn't stake their reputation on a move to a bad restaurant. I can't think of too many people in Buffalo's restaurants who would be headhunted by another restaurant due to his or her impeccable service and professionalism, which results in influence over the regulars.
