Dotsun Moon

Dotsun Moon
By Scott Washburn:

Buffalo's local music scene has a long and very rich history spanning many genres from jazz to metal. There is a new band to add to the list of great Buffalo talents and they are Dotsun Moon. With a sound that's somewhat of a throwback to 90's shoe-gaze, trip hop but without sounding the least bit dated, fans of Portishead, Morcheeba and Massive Attack will more than likely enjoy Dotsun Moon's musical sensibilities. They've been playing at various clubs around the city and making fans wherever they go. I sat with Rich Flierl of Dotsun Moon recently to get his perspectives and find out more about the band.

SW: Who are DOTSUN MOON?

Rich: Mary O. on vocals, Brian Templeton plays bass, Rami and I, Rich, play synth, guitar and program.

SW: How long have you been a band?

Rich: In this incarnation a year. Brian came aboard two years ago and Mary just before that. I originally started Dotsun Moon a few years back with a local musician now in Chicago, Jeff Fose. Mary sang Glory and I felt with her singing there was something worth pursuing.  Brian joined soon thereafter and the combination of his talent and enthusiasm convinced me this was something worth investing serious time in and making a recording with a professional engineer.

SW: What is "program" exactly?

Rich: Simply means using a computer and some kind of music software to perform parts of the music. It can be something as simple as a 3-second recording of a drum beat that repeats over and over to actually putting information in the computer that tells it when to play certain sounds at certain times. It can be as simple or as complicated as you like. Key to me is that our songs could be played acoustically and still sound good.

SW: The name, DOTSUN MOON, does it have a special significance or origin?

Rich: The name has significance to me. It creates imagery in my head in a number of different ways. From celestial bodies, to an old car, to the bindi. Hopefully it sets the mind wandering for others, too. It also keeps me focused when it comes to making music.

SW: When writing or making music, are you working from a particular idea that you have in your head? Or does music just come out when you focus and write?

Rich: I can only speak for myself. I really try to start with a vocal melody or a music phrase. Something to center the song around. Sometimes I feel like I am so not with what is going on in music right now, as blatant hooks aren't really prevalent. Take RJD2's "Dead Ringer" and add a vocalist - I aim for that level.

SW: Who were some of influential bands or artists that inspire your band?

Rich: Songs more than bands inspire. "Safe From Harm" by Massive Attack, "Just Like Honey" by the Jesus and Mary Chain, "Heavy Makeup" by Tobacco or "A Town Without Pity" by Gene Pitney. If you listen, I am sure you will find a common thread in those songs.  And then Mary brings her own influence of soul into the mix. I know Bill Laswell and Massive Attack are a big influence on Brian. You can hear it in his bass lines.  Rami recently joined. He is just as inspired by music found in sounds and samples as he is by chords.  I know he is a huge Flaming Lips fan.

SW: What local talents may have particularly inspired you to write and perform?

Rich: Bev Beverly. Fourem. Viva Noir reminds us to put the kick drum in. The Bird Day is amazing. Vinnie Derosa. Nick Gordon. Red Rummage Sale. At Sea. The guys from Wooden Waves when they were Sleeping Kings of Iona really made me want to make music. When I was a little kid I heard Sin 73 by The Splat Cats and still feel that is one of the greatest albums ever made. And no one knows it. The Splat Cats are my Velvet Underground.  Josh Meyers, the engineer recording our CD has really opened our eyes to how sound mixes better and how to expand our sonic palette.

SW: What would you say would be the ultimate live gig for DOTSUN MOON? Both local and otherwise?

Rich: We recently played Mohawk with a NYC band called The Lost Patrol. A singer named AreHouse was also on the bill. That show was so well mixed by Neal who does sound at Town Ballroom. That combined with the comfort level of a place like Merge where we've played would be the ultimate.

SW: Any plans for a tour?

Rich: Not at the moment. We plan to play out of town, but I wouldn't call it a tour.

SW: Having played gigs around the city and Rochester as well, what would you say has been DOTSUN MOON's best and worst experiences?

Rich: Live, it all depends on the sound person. Whether it is ourselves or the venue's person. A well-mixed show is a high. A poorly mixed show is just crushing.

SW: When Rich Flierl goes out in Buffalo to hear some live music, where does he check into first?

Rich: I've mentioned Mohawk, Merge and Town Ballroom for shows. Honestly, before I even go out I check my email, Facebook, Gusto, Artvoice, and Buffalo Rising. Because along with established venues, a lot of great music can be heard at house parties or at a warehouse that is being used for the night. Then there are places like Sugar City and Nobody's that always have great bands.

SW: Tell us a little about what you'd like to see happen for DOTSUN MOON, plans for the future?

Rich: For the Summer, we hope to play a couple of festivals. And in October we will be playing a long mellow evening at Shakti Yoga on Grant with a great combination of video and music planned. Really want to fill a niche in the music collections of those always looking for new music. Complete our CD.  Personally, I'd love to keep making music for specific uses, whether it be local stage productions, blogs, independent films or whatever. We love the multi-media aspect.

Upcoming gigs:

Infringement Festival @ Theater B

Western New York Book Arts Center Sat, Jul 31st at 7:30pm

Mary O. how original. I wish people would stop talking abt buffalo's incredible music scene. the goos ate great but after them it kind of died with Mark Freeland. every mid level city spawns a comparable number of similar "interesting" bands but no heavy hitters.

Well, Lester, some of us have chosen to leave the 80's behind, step out of the cave of our mom's basement, look beyond that empty 40oz Genny Creamer, turn down 97Rock and actually go listen to what is being played around town! Dotsun Moon is a fun band. So is Reverend Soapbox and the Rabble Rousers! Andrew J Reimers plays a great set and the Skiffle Minstrels always move my feet. And you know what all of the above bands have in common? They're playing for the LOVE OF IT! And after living out West for nearly 20 years where every band that comes to town is there for one reason - a record contract - and most of them suck, it's nice to see some folks playing because they just want to play. THAT is a music scene, bud.

Thanks for the setlist of mediocre bands that may sound remotely enjoyable after your ten cans of PBR Wilber the Pig. I absolutely love it when 40 somethings toss out names of obscure bands in a lame attempt to sound... connected. Also, because you play for the "love of it" doesn't mean you're the least bit interesting, creative, or even slightly musically gifted, if anything the bands you mention are more challenged than anything, yay let's cheer for a band that has McGarret's as its home. Most serious musicians play for a f-ing contract, because it's not only their love but a job, they don't all get one of course but it's what they all strive for, unless they're stuck in a place like Buffalo. How long did it take the Goos or DiFranco to get out of here? Let me guess, the bands you mention would never sell out but prefer to display their talents at s-holes like Mohawk or Tudor. If you happen to had the misfortune of wasting time in LA I'm still sure you saw your share of extremely talented people as well as the posers. It's the music Mecca, but don't try to pass off this city as some genuine sanctuary or domicile of steadfast musicians. Finally, F-U because with respect to the 80s I KNOW you were totally in lockstep with 97 Rock while others of us had our fingers on the pulse of local music.

actually, could you elaborate? I know, because I think local music is average at best I'm Satan, but back yourself up just a little. throwing out mundane, slight insults is evidence of someone devoid of any imagination, ergo you must be a local musician.

I don't debate with losers who live in their mom's basement, but I will say that there are MANY great bands in this city and amazing talents here, you ought to come out from under your rock and hear some of them.

Well, in answering you are effect debating me, no? And my mother's basement, very clever, I don't think I've ever heard anyone come up with such a creative retort, especially that one, in the past... day. However, I must admit that you have proven me wrong in your emphatic, empirical laden statement that there are MANY "great" bands & "amazing" talents here. You got me there. Enough flame throwing, this thread, in addition to your writing "style" are boring me to sleep. Sweet dreams.

In defense of our local talents; Brian Mcknight, Grover Wahington, Talas, 805, David Kane and all of his bands over the years, Electroman, The Celibates, The Irving Klaws, The Rabies, Bonesaw Romance, The Outer Circle Orchestra, The Waz, There are numerous other local talents and new bands that we can mention here, believe me I can go on Lester. The point of this little interview was not to show off my talents, if any, as a writer but merely to help introduce a promising local talent.
You owe Dotsun Moon and all of these other people an apology for insulting them. Mediocre is an insult at best, and you really should be out there patronizing with your cash rather than doing it here on BRO, sarcastically, with your fingers. Now get out of that basement and get some local culture.

Your comments are wrong on so many levels. First you absolutely attack me like an 8th grade Facebook mean girl after I basically say "I don't care for the local music scene." And continue doing so after I respond to another's attack- I was yanking the Pig's chain more than anything. Then have the audacity to say you don't respond to losers, but here you go responding over & over. Next after I imply that Buffalo music had it's heyday in the 80s & 90s you bust out with several 70s, 80s, & 90s bands (Electroman was Mark Freeland d-bag), I guess the only one you left out was Gary Maliber, and Talas... really? Did you simply wiki "Buffalo music" to arbitrarily come up with those names? Thanks for the in-depth history lesson, are you really Alan Cross posing as Scott Washbasin?

I didn't initially slam the local music scene, I basically noted that it's average. That alone apparently makes me a sick little person, severe... a little. I'd hate to see what you say to people who openly criticize your writing, how many other writers on BRO openly vilify comments? ZERO. So while my views may ultimately be unpopular, you seriously need to grow up, you're not writing (and I do now use that term as loosely as possible) for the NY Times, but still... In the end, local bands may add to a fun evening but there's none that are going to have a merch area overrun by fanatical fans. Perhaps you need to get out of your mama's basem... wait you coined that expression right? If only I possessed your original wit, maybe I could interview Billy Sheehan.

Lester Czepnakski and the Internet. A Cautionary Tale.

Hey, Les, nice retort. First of all, that was a lovely alliteration to E.B. White's classic children's tale. But it is WilbUr in the book, not WilbEr as you have written. But I will give you points because, now, I and others know that you have read at least ONE book in this masterpiece of mediocrity you call a life.

As well, just because you vomited on the dance floor of the Continental back in 1985 doesn't mean that you are any more 'connected' than anyone else in this town of half a degree of separation. It simply means that you can't think beyond your own youth, are trapped in the falsity of your past and, ultimately, wouldn't know good music if it jumped up and nipped that tiny little...nose of yours.

Finally, Lester, unless you're opening at Bonaroo, playing the Whiskey this Friday or touring with U2, you are nothing but the same 'poser' that you claim to disdain - rife with nothing but criticism of those doing what you can only talk about. See, that's the problem with the deadly combination of ignorance and self loathing; you hate yourself, but you're just too stupid to realize it!

Ciao, babe!

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

Ah yes, I think you may have meant allusion rather than alliteration, presumably you weren't an English major, but who's counting?

Perhaps you find personal fulfillment in "moving your feet" on the dance floor of McGarret's, and really, who am I to tread upon such joy? So you keep that up as bars empty all around you. Yet because I have such audacity to criticize the state of local music (yes, we must bow down before you, Pig, because you lived in... LA, which of course means, because of transference, that you are a musical guru, just curious did you mean Bonnaroo? maybe Bonaroo is the latest incarnation in LA that we stupid malcontents don't know about yet)then I know nothing about music much like Sgt. Schultz. Forgive my ignorance, I am not worthy of the piss soaked floor of the Mohawk that you dance upon.

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

Here's an example of an alliteration for you -

Lester's leptochrous and lepadoid leucousness led locals to limit him to the largest of leprosariums!

Oh, and, no, I don't think I will forgive your ignorance. But it is true that you are not worthy of my piss.

you have a poetic gift, what a loss for the English speaking world that you do not do it more often, perhaps consider submitting to ArtVoice. not trying to get the last word in, but your last comment... I'm actually at a loss. I have no repartee for such genius.

Wow...this thread went low quick. (An F-Bomb in the first four posts, is that a record?, soon followed by a mom's basement reference, can you have a real pissing match online without that one? Didn't think so.)

Seemed like a reasonably interesting piece about a local band. If they make it big, we can all say we remember when... if not, they got to be interviewed... doesn't seem like something to get too worked up about.

Totally agree Ben, couldn't resist poking back. Where all this angst over an interview comes from is beyond me, but I have to add that I have never read a thread on BRO about any topic at all that didn't go dark, not one. Lot's of miss-placed anger around this town it seems.

With all due respect, everyone is entitled to their opinion. If this band isn't your bag, that's fine. I will dare to thumb my nose at the robby goo asskissing in this town and say that goo goo dolls are a pile of sh*t, and ani hasn't released a good cd in years.

However, to take down an ENTIRE music scene? You've seen every band here to be the all-knowing about it, right? You've gone to venues other than Mohawk and Nietzsches and have seen everything there is to see, right?

When bands from other cities come in, we ALWAYS have a conversation about how great the scene is here, the great bands we have here, how much they LOVE to play Buffalo. I'm not the one who starts that conversation, either.

Yes, there is a lot of crap - just like any other music scene. The best bands aren't always at the best venues, and sh*t bands who shouldn't have left their basements are playing big shows because they knew someone who knew someone. You've got to look under the surface, and you will find some really incredible musicians here. Because guess what - it's like that in EVERY scene.

As far as Dotsun Moon, if they're not your bag, just move on.
