D'Avolio

D’Avolio
It didn't take long to see another niche culinary shop spring up on Elmwood after the recent opening of Penzeys Spices. This time it's a business dedicated to olive oils and vinegars (and more). Hopefully, being ideally located in close proximity to The Lexington Co-op, these types of niche shops will benefit from shoppers looking to add a variety of hard to find flavorings to their cooking routines. As for prices, it all depends on the amount of product ordered and where it's coming from. I asked Christa Glennie Seychew to give us her take on the business:

Stores specializing in olive oil and vinegars are a big deal on the West Coast, and California-grown olive oil has a devoted following.  Olive oil is like wine in that it has terroir (the flavor of the soil and climate of its region) and its overall taste can also reflect the style of its maker, so there is a solid argument for people who love to sample and buy a variety of olive oils. It is not just cooking fat, it is--in some people's eyes--a food to be savored and appreciated. Same with vinegar, which has a kazillion variations from ingredients to aging and storage methods. You could structure a tasting party around a variety of these items, and professional and home chefs are likely to love this idea.

One suggestion that I do have for D'Avolio is to team up with Penzeys to create a culinary buzz for that section of the street. It would be nice to see a few outdoor cooking demonstrations. As for CityLove Clothing, it is unfortunate to see the doors close, but I did talk to Tony and he told me that he was researching retail outlets that would sell his Buffalo t-shirts (first will be Everything Elmwood), and he is happy to be back doing custom work for clients, among other things.

Good news.

Still pissed the owner of this building whitewashed the brick and timbers on the facade. Was one of my favorite buildings on the street.

I'm glad Tony will still be selling his t-shirts. They are really great t-shirts, I'm wearing one right now!

Any idea on the price point for the oils?

Good luck with this endeavor, but is olive and vinegar really in high demand?

Aside from that, I think this building is jinxed. Seems like a bad sign that so many businesses have been through this spot in such little time. Is this a landlord issue?

I think its just a condition of its location on the tail end of a retail district coupled with a small space that doesn't have good visible permeability to the interior.

I visited a similar store in Florida this spring and it was mobbed. the price point ranged because they had great small sizes on up to gift baskets. It was great. I hope they make it.

Cue 20 comments about the use of Papyrus in the signage.

When I see a sign in Papyrus, I think "yoga studio" or "day spa".

Papyrus sucks, but it beats Buffalo's favorite typeface, Brush Script.

I wish them all the luck in the world but I seriously wonder how they're gonna cover monthly expenses selling only olive oil and vinegar. And how fast do you go thru these items anyhow? I cook quite a bit and I rarely go thru a bottle a month of EVO. Anyways, my 2 cents.

I agree....I am a big fan of California olive oils and I use it a lot and I only buy 1 or 2 bottles a month (from the co-op). They are going to have to sell a lot of bottles to pay their bills. I will definitely check this place out when it opens. I wish them luck.

I thin this is a great great idea. good vinegars are impossible to find so I will be buying allot. I'm sure they'll have cookbooks to for cooking with olive and vinegar hint hint and other stuff maybe food. will they be open for the elmwood arts show?

Between this place, Penzey's Spices and the produce available at the Lexington Coop, we now have the "Salad District" of Buffalo.
