Where Should Obama Eat?

Where Should Obama Eat?
So we hear President Obama is coming to town, and our first thought when we heard this was---where will he eat? Okay, so we're admittedly a little single-minded over here in the Dining section, but with so much good food to eat here in Buffalo, it's a thought that is weighing heavily on our minds.

Our predicament is: Do we take the President to sample some of Buffalo's quintessential blue collar cuisine with deep roots in our region's ethnic foodways, or do we want to show off our bright and sparkly fine dining establishments? Is it a question of proving that we cut the mustard when compared to some of the country's finest restaurants (which certainly the President has dined at his fair share of) or do we show our history, the thing that really sets our part of the country apart culinarily?

So, it's your call. You tell us--where would you take Obama? Do you go for classic or contemporary, simple and homey or high-end and honed? Finally, if the President could only stop for takeout (something he seems to have a penchant for), where would you suggest he go?

And please let's assume that chicken wings are probably on his 'to do' list and avoid the tired wing debate.

Last month's discussion of where President Obama should dine during his brief visit to Buffalo inspired a comment from a reader with the handle "boozehound". Our reader suggested that the banana cream pie at Mazurek's was noteworthy, and that I, myself... Read More

I would say either Chef's or Buffalo Chop House. The Chop House is fancy, but still very 'Buffalo'.

FOUNDING FATHERS is kind of the epitome of Buffalo. Uhlrich's is the oldest bar in Buffalo. Both are great ideas. Founding Father's might be the easiest place to "Secure" though. No Windows, One-way traffic. Close to highways.

If they are looking for something a little nicer, I suggest Left Bank or something in questionable neighborhoods that are doing their part to reclaim the city from no-gooders.

Most likely he will go to Anchor Bar because of its location downtown.

Anywhere but Duffs, Chef's, and Chophouse all three way over rated. My guess is that he's going to end up at Anchor Bar since it's a "Main Street" themed tour. Ulrich's would be pretty cool as well. However there's really only one place the President of the United States should go, Founding Fathers.

Taking the president out to eat should be more than giving him food that tastes good, it should be about people, who like him are trying to make the world a better place. We conceived our bakery as he was getting elected, and owe a debt of gratitude for the inspiration. I would love the opportunity to welcome him into our bakery at Five Points on the lower west side and let him try some apple cake. It may be organic, whole grain and all local, but the words from a recent post on our facebook page by Sheila Conboy says it all,"That Apple Cake brought me to my knees!"

Buffalo's oldest and best bar: Ulrich's on Ellicott!

He can enjoy a "beef on weck" while sitting in Ulrich's tastefully executed new addition and chase it down with Buffalo Brewing's "1st Ward Red."

The only outstanding upscale cuisine within a half hour of Buffalo is in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Then again, it might do him some good to be somewhere arguably less socialist than the People's Republic of NY. Dare I dream?

Schwabl's, Duff's, or any Ted's or Mighty Taco would be a good choice.

I wonder if the same amount of protesters against the Patriot Act and Afghan war that we saw here when GWB visited will happen this time, since Obama has continued those policies mostly unchanged.

If I were his people planning the visit, I'd go with Ulrichs and stop by the medical campus to try taking credit for that. I hope he enjoys his lunch here and returns for more meals in 2013 as a former prez.

Everyplace says that. Everyplace has so much good food to eat. It's hard to argue unique when crap like Anchor Bar is always touted as the best you have.

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

Agreed LouisTully, but who is doing the "touting" and why are we allowing such behavior?

Additionally, "unique" and "best" are not the same thing. I would argue that there are some unique locations listed above amongst a lot of dull ones, many/most of which I think would not fall under the category of "best".

But that sounds like baiting since I'm not going to list my personal opinion here. I guess what I'm saying is that I think, like many other areas with an intense loyalty to our hometown, that we as Buffalonians sometimes confuse what we find comforting and homey with what might be "best".

So far in the comments we've seen popular opinion suggest pie and wings. And beer. And a few joints with other things on their menu appear as well, but most are not known for consistency or quality outside of maybe Ted's. Although ToTheTable's notion is self-promoting, I have to say I think he's got the most interesting suggestion so far.

You guys are letting me down, I thought that collectively we had more passion, imagination and better palates....

Christa, I'll be labeled a heretic here but I don't think Buffalo is a great food town. Sure, there are exceptions but your comment that locals '... confuse what they find comforting and homey with what might be the best' is spot on.

The locally-sourced food debate in recent weeks on this blog missed the important point: passion. For years, I lived a few blocks from the Union Square Green Market in Manhattan and I watched as the market grew to its now almost infamous status. When you walk around the market on a Saturday, you see people excited about food. (The local thing is almost an afterthought.) I just don't see that passion in Buffalo -- where Wegman's is seen as an acceptable substitute to a public market-- but I think that intelligent food writers like you can affect positive change in western New York. (Personally, I'd love to see BRO have yearly food/market/restaurant awards to spur interest, too.)

Paul Buffalo-

You're not eating in the right places--we may need to go to dinner.

Over the last three-five years here, I've seen remarkable change in our dining scene. Today we do have quite a bit of talent and passion here. Those who posses it are working 80-100 hours a week in their kitchens or in their fields. The chefs I know who embrace local (really embrace it, not just market it), do so because it's about freshness and quality--things that inspire them.

Now talent and passion are not available at every place in town by any means, but they are at an increasing pace. I believe the change and growth that we really require now is in the hands (and mouths) of the public. And yes, I believe food writers are responsible for pushing that here in Buffalo and elsewhere (I wish more of them realized that). When chefs can't sell exquisite, seasonal specials, but run out of casear salads, filet mignon and cheesecake, you can't really blame the restaurants, can you?

I do my best to write about those that are passionate AND talented in all of my food writing, but it becomes challenging to not write solely about them, but to also write about those who are doing more of the cookery Buffalo is accustomed to. And, I'm not saying it is all about refinement and technical complexity (though both of those things really get me going), quality is also about competency and consistency. Let's face it, REALLY good chicken Parmesan can be really good. The trouble is, most of the parm being slung out there now is made with sub-par cheese and cheap pre-fab frozen chicken, fried in dirty oil and microwaved. It's just like wings, REALLY good wings are freaking wonderful, but most of the time the wings I order pretty much suck.

So there we are. I think Buffalo is at a crossroads in so many ways--and food is just one of them. We can collectively hop on board, take some risks and try some new things, support the talent, marvel at the sights and lick our wounds when things go badly--or--we can settle into our rut and be happy with mediocre predictability.

Okay, so this has been fun, and thank you for the chat, but I really have to do some work now instead of preaching in the comments section.

The Left Bank, Rhode Island St, Buffalo - Say hi to Jeff B at the Bar!
Curly's Grill, Ridge Rd, Lackawanna - Krista works magic with fish!
Fuji Grill III, N. Buffalo St, Orchard Park, NY - Tomo may try to squirt saki in the Prez's mouth ... now that's local charm!
Chef's Restaurant, Seneca St, Buffalo - Cannot go wrong for Italian!
I'd go with Eckel's or Charlie the Butcher's for Beef on Weck - different ambiance but equally fantastic!
The Old Orchard Inn in O.P. is a combination of rural charm and historic elegance.
Gramma Mora's was fantastic on Cinco de Mayo - the Pancho Villa was HOT!

That's my two cents ... (maybe a little more) ... but I could go on forever!

1st - Mazurek's is (or was when I knew it) a very old school Hungarian bakery and is really good. Kiefli (or Kieflitzen)- try it if they have it.

2nd - The Pres probably can't eat anywhere on the fly, food is gonna be checked 19x before it reaches his fork.

3rd - But if he could eat on the fly I wouldn't take him to the Ted's / Anchor, etc. Why not show him the best even if he can fly overnighters and eat at El Bulli whenever he wanted. Maybe make him think it's not just bar food and blue collar. I'm out of practice with cuisine in Buff though. When I'm back I'll have to refamiliarize.

So the question is, where should I go to eat in Buffalo after a year of eating at the 'rents house when I had last visited?
