Veteran's Art Gallery Opens

Veteran’s Art Gallery Opens
Submission by Dan Frontera

May is recognized as Military Appreciation month.  It is a time when we put aside the opinions of why wars are waged and we recognize the men and women, sons and daughters, fathers and wives who have served.  A time when we remember those who did not come home and recognize that those who did will never be the same.  So many come home unable to deal with what they have experienced, unable to express their emotions, unable to ask for or find help.

Then there is art.  There is expression and healing, there is passion and sometimes rage, there is inspiration and most of all there is hope.  Those are the benefits that the Veteran's Art Program has delivered to veterans this past winter.

The benefits of working with teaching artists from The Arts in Education Institute of WNY and counselors from the VA-Buffalo Vet Center are simple, yet provide major impact as they also lead to dealing with PTSD and service related depression through canvass, paint, video, spoken word, music, and glass.

The first gallery showing of the Vets' work in both fine and performing arts will open in the Copper Shop Gallery on the Historic Roycroft Campus in East Aurora this Friday, May 14, 2010 from 6-9 pm and will run through June 14, 2010.

This is as much an exhibit of the creation of art as it is an exhibit of the journey of spirit.  Join us in an appreciation of what art can do.
