TO DIE FOR by Claire Geist:
It's remarkable how attached you can become to your accessories. For many women, a handbag or purse that they carry with them everywhere is an extension of themselves. It means private space, a location in the world to order their things. It's their own iconography, their own way of feeling chic even when they feel crummy. But for many other women, it's just an accessory used solely for the purpose of keeping things organized and in one place, no sense of style or fashion to be kept in mind just as long as the piece gets the job done. Some other women or men feel overwhelmed by the thought of spending copious amounts of money on such an important investment that is supposed to go with them wherever the road takes them, rain or shine. In any situation, there is a bag to tote to get the job done. It's as important as a coat, shoe or belt!
For spring/summer 2010, New York fashion week was flooded with smaller carry-alls and clutches. Even fanny packs and belt bags are making a comeback, as seen at Louis Vuitton and Proenza Schouler! The idea of freedom and a lack of attachment to your bag was paired well with the notion of romance for spring. Downsize with clutches that transition well from day to night in a colorful, playful print that lacks embellishments like stones or rivets. These are perfect for making an extremely simple ensemble like a T-shirt, blazer and pin jeans look super polished and remarkably chic. Another huge trend seen on the runways was the satchel, in nude or powdery colors, these amazing day bags work wonders with carrying everything you need. A relaxed satchel with short straps also adds playful masculine punch to a girly, 'flowy' skirt when the weather gets warm.

Another option on the other side of the spectrum is the messenger bag. Being able to carry important things in a clean, no-fuss manner is the essence of a messenger bag whether it's for work or play. It's a favorite of many people who prefer to keep their hands free. The bag became popular with pony express mail carriers in the early half of the 20th century as it kept as an excellent way for delivery boys to ride their bikes and deliver goods at the same time. The utility lineman's bag of the 1950s made by De Martini Globe Canvas Company is considered to be the first commercially made model of his bag. Remember to look for a piece that rests comfortably and can be carried without inducing neck strain for hours. In this style, a simple outer design is key while pockets and compartments galore line the inside.

In all honesty, a women should only have about 4-6 bags. 2-3 day bags that carry everything and 1-2 smaller ones for the evening or formal events. When dropping serious cash on a purse, always check the quality of the product. Leather is unbelievably durable and can last forever, but upkeep is also important. Keep suede clean and leather from cracking. When buying goods from a designer house, they stand by their products and typically offer great customer service as well as a very high quality product. Unfortunately, the markup on these luxury items is extremely high and people know it. This drives the desire (for some people) to own fake handbags in similar styles to show off some supposed wealth. To women of the world who see themselves reaching for that fake purse; I caution you to instead opt for saving up for that ultimate investment bag. You will be left with a product that will last you years and years, which is something you can't get out of a faux.

To get a general upkeep itinerary, you can check this out.
Or hit up Jimmie's on Hertel Avenue, where you can bring your beloved bags back to life with their excellent leather and canvas repair services along with your shoes.
While quality and functionality are important, it's also fundamental to keep your own personal style in mind. The artistic qualities of fabrics, leathers, ribbon, trim, hardware, design and color are completely endless in the world of bags. These two elements should always go hand-in-hand. There is no reason to invest in something that you don't see yourself carrying everywhere. Keep loud prints to a minimum, since they can be a challenge to style and keep fresh for long periods of time. Or, if you do decide to go for the loud trend, remember to pair your hot pieces with simple tailored ensembles.
Shop around and you're sure to find something you will fall in love with!

What kind of qualifications does the person who is styling these shoots have? I have enjoyed the quality of the photographs in these Fashion Maniac shoots, as well as the runway look boards/collages because they're on point. But there seems to be a total disconnect between the trends that are highlighted and then how the actual shoots are styled. Dumping a bunch of shoes on a girl is not styling. This concept could have been done so well, but it failed. There are so many shoes and bags on each model that you can't really pick up the details of the individual shoes or bags. It looks like a messy pile on both models, and as a result, the photographs just look bad.
As for everybody else in involved, keep up the great work! You might want to consider finding a new stylist, though.
Have you ever looked inside a Fashion Magazine in your life? I mean a HIGH END Fashion Magazine? The concepts used by this photographer are simular to what the major designers do. They not only show you the new trends, but put it in a story, an art form, make it intersting, unique, odd and eye catching. This concept is what catches attention. It must of caught your's, your commenting.
The qualifications that this stylist has are innumerable. She has shown her work on a number of runway shows, magazine covers, advertisements etc. This shoot was not intended as a billboard for any one designer, it was a hybrid of fine art and fashion. This shoot was a depiction of the most extreme visage of lifestyle and glamor. I've proudly worked on this project since it's inception, and we risked our necks (literally, the cops were called) to offer these images to the public as a way to show off the beauty and decadence of high fashion. What an honor to be part of a staff so dedicated to creating these images, I think this was a huge success!!!
