Celebration scheduled to honor Donna Berry

Celebration scheduled to honor Donna Berry
Days after District B Chief Donna Berry was demoted to lieutenant, communities around the city continue to rally in support of her past efforts that helped to make the city a better place to live. As Facebook helps to gather people to her allegiance, there are still others who are organizing a community celebration one week from today at D'Arcy McGee's Irish Pub. The celebration is intended to be a 'Thank You' for her time of service as chief on the force, as well as a message of support (and concern) in response to her stunning reassignment to lieutenant. A message from one celebration organizer, Judi Griggs:

Residents, business owners, law enforcement professionals and all others touched by Berry's leadership are welcome to the after-work celebration including free food and an open bar (courtesy of Mark Croce). We called Mark Croce, owner of D'Arcy McGee's, to see if he would consider letting us have a party there. He responded immediately that he'd be honored to host the event.

At least two Facebook pages in support of Berry with more than 500 members sprung up within hours of the announcement of her reassignment. The comments cover a deep cross section of city residents, praising her commitment both on-duty and off-duty to the city she loves.

Those who can't attend the party to personally thank Berry are invited to send a contribution in her name to Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo, PO Box 351, Buffalo, NY14201. Berry has been an active board member for the community gardening program which works with public and private sectors to revitalize neighborhoods and build quality of life through the reuse and beautification of vacant land.

Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo will host an informational table at the party and will gratefully accept donations in Chief Berry's honor there.

I hope her replacement, remembers that Allentown is in their district. Berry, is the reason that B District ramped up their attention to our neighborhood and it had a visible impact.

It is gratifying to see the community responding to give Donna Berry highly deserved thanks.

Hopefully she can be convinced to not re-activate her 2008 plan before being made 'chief', referenced in the 8/08 BR article linked above, to retire to her co-owned house in Palm Springs CA. That would be a double loss to Bflo of an important 'activist', on top of losing her as chief.

Can anybody document to her comfort that California is now in worse shape than NYS (& Bflo)??

yet another clueless, tone-deaf move from inside the barricades on the 2nd floor of city hall.

We are going to miss db. I doubt if her replacement will be half as involved in the community as she was. Donna was willing to attend just about any meeting she was asked to attend (she sat on several boards herself.) She was so involved in Allentown; you would see her out occasionally talking to patrons at local businesses. You were able to talk to her about local problems and she would give you honest advice. She really knew her district and truly cared about the people that lived there. If a bad crime spree happened she took it personally as if it happened to her and in a way it did because B District was her home. I truly doubt if we will see anything near her commitment to the community from her replacement. Sad.

Chief Berry represents that "old school" way that urban policing used to be done, by getting out in the neighborhood and familiarizing oneself with the players in and the concerns of the community. Must be she forgot to send in her campaign contribution to Mayor Clown.

Mayor Clown? Mayor Slime Ball. I just heard the story about Berry not making a campaign contribution yesterday and it just amazes me that this clown (oh yeah you're right) is still not under investigation or house arrest. Maybe he should be called Mayor Teflon.

Another story I caught a piece of yesterday is how someone "connected" was able to buy an empty lot that passed through city hall in 5 days. When others that wanted to buy it hit all kinds of walls.

How many more years of this???

I can't remember the reassignment of a person in the police department getting so much attention. Donna is deserving of the highest praise.

Donna, You received a terrible injustice from the "slime
bag" Mayor of this city. He should be ashamed of himself.
South Buffalo residents have also received a slap in the
face. We have known Donna since Jr. High School in Kenmore; growing up with my kids. She has always been deeply loved
and respected. This city should take their "hats off" to
her for her love and dedication shown this community.
Donna, you'll always be "CHIEF" to us. Love you, "Ma" Whelan
