BYOB - Church Gets More Interesting

BYOB - Church Gets More Interesting
It took a bike blessing ceremony for me to go to church today. In this day and age (I've talked about it before) churches need to reinvent themselves to draw new followers, and as people begin to shift their values from one place to another, churches should not only recognize the shifts, but embrace them. That is what happened when cyclist Cynthia Van Ness approached Reverend Drew (Ludwig), asking whether he would entertain a 'Blessing of the Bikes'. Drew (photo right), an avid cyclist himself, declared that he would conduct the blessing as a remembrance of those cyclists who have lost their lives on the road as well as a blessing for those who take their lives in their hands each day when they leave their house on two wheels.

On the way out of the church, there was a collection plate in which to drop a couple of bucks for the church as well as a collection helmet where cyclists could support the efforts of Green Options Buffalo. As churchgoers filed out the door, Drew asked that they ring their bells and toot their horns to mark the occasion. As for me, I know that I'll be going to church at least once a year and that's a pretty big deal. Actually, make that twice a year thanks to the annual pet blessing ceremony that Drew also offers. Now, if Drew offered an orchid blessing I might go three times a year - for the life of me I can't figure out how people keep those plants from biting the dust!

I all seriousness, Blessing of the Bikes is about spiritual awareness and/or general bike safety. Call it psycho-semantics or divine intervention, but the next time I narrowly swerve out of the way of being 'doored', I'll think back to the blessing and say a Hail Mary for Drew. In a sports town like Buffalo, maybe even the Hail Mary might even start to be used outside of the context of football. As for BYOB? Bring your own bikes, of course.

I don't know what to think of this. Blessing dogs is one thing, but inanimate objects? I think I would feel better if the priest was blessing the bike riders...not the actual bikes (was he?).

actually, all of the prayers were prayed for people, and the water was sprinkled onto bikes and people.

When did Christianity turn into voodoo?

'... churches need to reinvent themselves to draw new followers....'

Do you want the good Reverend to don a tux and do a 60-minute standup routine?

'... and as people begin to shift their values from one place to another, churches should not only recognize the shifts, but embrace them'.

No, shifting values are the domain of politicians.

I'd settle for less hypocrisy and fewer sex scandals.

I love stand up, but not tuxes.

There was no real "shift of values" here. Biking is about stewardship, which is an ancient Christian value. We did it in a fun way--but having fun does not mean we're different. Shifting values would mean blessing things that are antithetical to the faith.

As for hypocrisy and sex scandals--maybe there would be less if faith were not compartmentalized, but integrated into everything we do--including the ways we get around.

Drew, I'm not questioning your values. I just wonder what sort of reinvention Newell is proposing? This might be a good question for one of your articles here on BRO.

I think the church is in an excellent position to promote active and healthy lifestyles - our government isn't doing a very good job. It is probably the tone of this article that does not sit well with some people - as well as some of the author's ambiguous comments about shifting values.

Hopefully through some of these events people begin to make relevant connections with the Church and Christ. Best of luck in navigating the theological/worldly landscape in the future!

Thanks for the responding!

rev. drew isn't the first to consider transportation through this lens. randy 'the ethicist' cohen talks about transportation ethics here:

I stopped reading this article after about the first 43 words. Religion isn't like a business. Perhaps someone should write the New New Testament with some new and exciting characters and more provocative plots.

Growing up Catholic and not living under a rock the last 30 some years, Ive seen a lot of things blessed by many denominations of the Christian faith. Maybe if the "worldly" people who comment on here would just get out once in a while they wouldn't be so quick to judge.

for what its worth, a little googling got me various blessing traditions:

animals, the fleet, motorcycles, the sun (jewish), new moon (also jewish), fields, vines (as in vineyards), waves (for surfers), baskets (easter), wheat, blankets (navajo), salt, rings (in marriage), liturgical vestments, paschal candles, organs (the musical kind).

Actually, I remember bringing our brand new '64 Impala for a blessing from our favorite rebel priest! Nothing voodooish about it, just a prayer for all to be safe in the vehicle. And when i sold it (for $750) 6 years later it had never been in any kind of trouble or crash. Who knows????
