Buffalo Riverfest First Ward Hike

Buffalo Riverfest First Ward Hike
The Buffalo Hiking Group first led a very successful historic hike from the Inner Harbor along the Buffalo River this past February. It was at that time that they announced a second hike, which was to be scheduled in the spring. In keeping with the celebration theme, the club has decided to coincide the hike with one of my favorite festivals of the year - Buffalo Riverfest.

The coming June 18 expedition proves to be one of great interest for anyone who has heard about Riverfest Park... but doesn't know exactly where it is. Or where Father Conway Park is found? Legend has it that the park site is where they dumped the bones of the FLW Administration Building. That's also where the Riverfest celebration takes place (see site). You will hike by the location for the new Buffalo River rowing boathouse. In fact, there are so many interesting place to visit in the old First Ward (see) and the Cobblestone District (see), that taking a tour is just about the only way to cover all the grounds. You can even bring the kids and impress them by pointing out Ledge Spot (image). Points of interest along the hike include:

- The New York Central Freight Terminal
- Site of the former Fingy Connors Saloon
- Site of the Former Buffalo Dry Docks
- The Great Northern Elevator
- The Edward Cotter Fireboat
- The Swannie House
- Barcalo Manufacturing
- Father Conway Park (former Ohio Basin)
- The Harbor Inn
- Former Rowing Clubs of The Mutuals, The Lightning A.C. and The Celtic Rowing Club

Following are the details of the hike:

Departing from the Buffalo Riverfest at Father Conway Park at 6:30pm on Friday, June 18th and should be back by 8:30pm. On Saturday we will be departing from Father Conway Park at 1:00pm and should be back by 4:00pm, just in time for the music to start in the beer tent! This is a great place to see attention. It has so much potential and it's nice to see a lot of other people feel the same.

The little river part of Connery park is actually a really cool park, and is a smaller version of what I imagine Pegs Park will be like since it's just a bit down the road.

Looks like that picture was taken in Beruit.

I agree. Very depressing.

I don't find these places depressing at all. For me, the grain elevators and the surrounding landscape is Buffalo's purest experience of architecture and space.

The city should work on providing safe access to the more remote areas along the Buffalo River. A safe and legal route to the top of Concrete Central would be amazing!
