A Big Blue Wall on Main Street

A Big Blue Wall on Main Street
It's that time of year again to point at the big blue wall found at the corner of Main and Delavan. I believe that it was Steel who first wrote about the eyesore a few years back. Since that time, the wall has not changed, but much has changed around the wall. Bits and pieces of Main Street are coming back to life, signaling to others to get on-board with additional aesthetic improvements. Of course Main Street has a long way to go, but with UB and Canisius helping to lead the way, the districts along Main will continue to improve.

I spoke to John Hurley, now President of Canisius College, a while back who told me that at one point there was a beautification project proposed for the big blue wall. We discussed different ideas at the time that would transform the sweeping corner from an eyesore to a dramatic 'welcome sign' for Canisius. It's bad enough that passersby can't see the school's athletic teams playing, as should be the case. It would be a major undertaking to change the elevated level back down to at-grade street level. It wouldn't be such a tremendous undertaking to add a stone facade to the wall, with flowers and an attractive Canisius sign. A project like that could transform the entire look of that intersection.

In the end, as Canisius continues to attract students (and their parents) to the neighborhood, then the aesthetic improvement could be chalked up to a marketing job for the college. Until that time, the big blue wall will represent many of the problems that have existed on Main Street for far too long.

In the '80s and at least some way into the '90s, this had a mural of basketball players on it. I don't know when it was painted over. I wonder if there are any old photos floating around.

Please no murals!

Love the stone facade and flowers with the school name idea. That would not have to be expensive, depending on the bidding.

I can never decide what I think about their electronic billboard. It IS bright and distracting to drivers, but it does bring life and is a lot better than a lot of other signage, but...I dunno.

UB South has a stone/ flower signage with "UB" designed into bushes. Looks nice. Then again, the campus is set a half mile back from Main St. There might as well be a moat with spikes and crocodiles. At least Canisius is integrated with the streetscape and neighborhood. I went to Ann Arbor recently. Wow. Buffalo is a long way from being a real college town. At least Amherst Tech is doing it right.............

The big blue wall at Main and Delevan is much preferred over a gang graffiti scarred wall or a deteriorated, boarded up building. So stop complaining because things could be much worse.

The point of this article is the complete opposite of what your fighting. The wall could be much better. I am sure Canisius College has enough police presence to stop graffiti from going up on a new wall. If not add a camera. Its a classy school, and that wall/fence is not classy.

one way to keep people from vandalizing blank walls is not to have blank walls.

I see the need for another stone wall with welcome sign, only this is at D'Youville College. The recently demolished house at the corner of York and Porter Ave. begs for something. I would hate to see them expand the parking all the way to the curb.

Not to mention the obnoxious Vegas-style animated sign. There's too many of those eyesores cropping up all around the city. They're not allowed by the zoning code but in Buffalo, sign regulations aren't enforced.

The Zoning Board of Appeals will not allow the animated signs if someone simply shows up at the public hearing to protest. I did last week and the ZBA turned down two requests for such signs on Delaware Avenue in North Buffalo.

Simply point out under what circumstances New York State laws allow variances and that the applicant has shown no evidence for reasons to grant a variance. Applicants never have the required evidence because it doesn't exist.

which gives me an idea. bro has been covering common council meetings after the fact, a nice public service. why not post zoning board agendas before the fact? not to mention common council agendas, preservation board agendas...

Good Idea. I know Planning and Zoning agendas can be emailed to anyone who wants them - just call the Planning Dept. They are also on the City's website but not always. Council and committee meetings are sometimes on the City's website - again unreliable.
