2010 Thursday at the Square Schedule Announced

2010 Thursday at the Square Schedule Announced
There are a few stories or subjects that we can always expect to generate a large number of comments here on Buffalo Rising. It's just a fact. Posts about pizza, city parking (lots, meters, free zones and ticketing policies), building to the curb and whether or not Whole Foods or Trader Joe's should (or ever will) come to Buffalo seem to get people really excited.

Another popular subject that always inspires debate are the annual postings of the summer's biggest outdoor live music events. This year's story about the artists chosen for Rockin' @ the Knox certainly garnered a fair share of opinions, as did the announcement of the Buffalo Place Rocks the Harbor line-up. This evening Buffalo Place announced the 2010 Thursday at the Square line-up. It'll be interesting to see what all of you have to say.

Cheers to TATS for kickin it off with Alejandro Escovedo!

He is Austin music royalty - we'd inquired about bringin him to Buffalo for an Austin-centric series we're workin on, but TATS beat us to em, and we're thankful to see him here in any event!

Very nice lineup overall, which comes as no surprise - the vast majority of TATS/Rocks the Harbor shows over the years have featured artists who still challenge themselves and their audiences, as opposed to those living off of yesterday's hits. While there's a place for both, we side with the former, and will soon announce some big outdoor shows of our own - keep up the great work, Buffalo Place!

TATS is too crowded, no one goes there anymore.

RR & Fam will rock.

exactly how can TATS be too crowded if nobody goes there anymore???

Really guys?

Strange that the biggest act on here is probably Rogue Wave and they are not even "headlining" a show.

It's things like this (or the National and Atlas Sound "opening" for Rufus Wainwright) that make me wonder whether it's really that Buffalo can't book better acts or whether it's that the people booking these acts really just don't have their fingers on the pulse of the current music scene.

Ingrid Michaelson is a real gem(sweater). Can't wait... this is an awesome line-up!

Weak line up. Too bad the Lafayette Tap Room is closed. Now the acts won't have anywhere to go when the show gets rained out.

If it were 1998 some of these bands would still be relevant. Rogue Wave is good though. How many times a year does Umphrees McGee play here? Is it me or does most of the lineup come through Buffalo at least once a year? I'd like to see more up and coming bands or bands that have never played here get booked for this. I don't care what genre, just acts new to Buffalo so people will feel more compelled to see them, otherwise they can wait a month when they play somewhere else around town.

I can't name one song by one act in the whole lineup. Is it because I am musically sheltered or because these bands aren't very main stream?l...or both...

OMG. Pathetic. And why is this series not starting until mid June? And then ending in Mid August. Aye yai yai

I sort of agree. Im 30 and none of these bands make me want to come out to TATS. But I will say that for some of us it's not the bands or the music that brings us, it's the idea of a large gathering of fellow Buffalonians having a good time! (and the background music is nice to have while talking to friends - lol)

I did'nt think anyone really went to the Square to watch a performance since the late 90's. From my experience (btw, stopped going in 2007) TAT has become nothing more than a drunk fest that ends up becoming a string of fist fights. The last time I went, I counted at least FIVE Different beat downs and one of them was let go by an officer (I hope by mistake) and continued a few feet right in front of me. This was all along Main Street where you can't even walk with out hearing people shout degrating words at each other, young kids smoking, grown men peeing in corners and right out in the open. I don't call that a great experience at all.

Agreed. Last time I went to a show (2008, I think), Main Street was a skid row of 14 to 16 year old emo and goth kids with no interest in the show whatsoever.

The lineup this year is SOOO WEAK it's not even funny. Check out the bands from past years and then compare it to this year's lineup:

I believe M&T Bank is the biggest sponsor for this event and it's no secret that the banking industry took a huge hit this year, which likely factors into things.

Buffalo Place advises that no coolers are allowed into the show because vending helps keep the concerts free. So, I have a theory - the more beer you buy at the show, the better the acts. Better drink up - from the looks of this year's lineup, we have a lot of ground to make up.

they make a bloody fortune on beer sales, It's all about booking cheap cheap bands to make more money, they know people will show up regardless of who is on stage

I just love that Hit and Run has a such a following. Who knew you could become local celebrities as a cover band playing carnivals! Oh Buffalo...

Well this line-up certainly doesn't make me want to board the train to nowhere. It has grown weaker by the year. Maybe it's time to re-organize, think outside of the box and give the current structure a quick painless death rather than let TATS fall into obscurity. Change venue? People keep talking about the Waterfront and it's importance, maybe head to Front Park? Somewhere else along the lake coastline? Change the hours? Hire larger acts? Have a local band night? Increase the variety of acts like it used to be? Something needs to change. TATS is old and fatigued in it's current state.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds?? It doesn't get much more pathetic than that.

Rogue Wave merits a headlining slot. At least those of us who want to avoid the obnoxious drunks can leave after they play.

Most common thing you'll hear: "Oh, that's where the library is"

What a terrible line up. Boy, it seems like all the summer concerts will end up being at the harbor! I would much rather pay the $10 to see someone who is actually good!

Im pretty sure that's the idea....you get what you pay for

"It'll be interesting to see what all of you have to say" . . . because we wouldn't want to say it and offend Buffalo Place.

I agree with them:

I have to admit, that I'm a little disappointed that the lineup was released so late, and the season so short. Maybe its the construction? Or it has to do with the competition for people regionally? For example, I'd be there for Rouge Wave if The Flaming Lips weren't at Artpark the same day. Also, I seem to remember there being a new concert series at the Hard Rock in NF this summer as well.

Regardless, Ozomatli puts on a great, engaging show which shouldn't be missed, and I have heard good things about Escovedo. I'll still be there a couple of times this season, as usual.

Feeling lukewarm on the lineup. Blame it on the "economic downturn", eh?

But hey, at least it's still free.
