Access is cleared. How’s the water?
Earlier in the week, City crews removed the last of the large pieces of debris from Emerald Beach located at the Erie Basin Marina. Over the weekend a few of BRO's writers rode down to the site to see the result (and picked up a few pieces of litter before they left). The rest of the cleanup is going to up to the beach-goers - it should only take a couple of rakes to clear the rest of the scattered driftwood.

As we stood looking out at the clear blue water, we discussed the water quality on the American side as well as the Canadian side. There are some great public beaches on the Canadian side of the lake, many of which are found along the Rails to Trails (like this beach for example). At this point, there is no swimming at Emerald Beach due mainly to marina traffic. Let's just say that swimming was allowed... if enough safety precautions were met to allow people in the water... down the road that might be a

Monday Mystery

Buffalo is a city full of great architecture.  I've taken thousands of pictures in recent years of downtown and the waterfront, striking vistas, industrial ruins, stately mansions, beautiful churches, working class neighborhoods and everything in between.  Most of us are familiar with our architectural landmarks, but do we really pay attention to the detail found on the buildings we oftentimes take for granted?  It's the mosaic of the good, the bad and the ugly that make up Buffalo's cityscape.

Each week I'll put up a photo from the city- some hard, others easy- as a fun

Rockin’ At the Knox Preview II: The National (Bloodbuzz Ohio Video)
We're less than three weeks from Rockin' at the Knox so we're continuing our previews of the upcoming show.  As you likely know, this year's card includes The National and Rufus Wainwright, two bookings that have generated mostly positive responses

Watch: SeaBar Anew
Those who regularly tune in to Buffalo Rising know that we've been eagerly awaiting the official unveiling of SeaBar's newly expanded digs and menu. For years now, Chef Mike Andrzejewski has offered guests some of the freshest and most inventive sushi in our area - along with a handful of other dishes - from his small, sparsely decorated downtown location. Its parent, the suburban SeaBar, closed its doors a month or two ago in preparation for the expansion of the downtown location, which now includes a large lounge and bar

War Resisters Are Veterans, Too
By Bruce Beyer:

Jeremy Hinzman 82 Airborne, Afghanistan.  Phil McDowell 1st Cavalry Division, Iraq.  Kimberly Rivera 2-17 Field Artillery, Iraq.  Dale Landry US Army, Iraq.  Chuck Wiley 17 year Chief Petty Officer US Navy.  All veterans, all war resisters presently living and seeking asylum in Canada.

On Tuesday May 25, Vietnam veteran Russell Brown and I drove to Toronto to stand with the War Resisters Support Campaign in solidarity with Afghanistan war resister Jeremy Hinzman as his lawyer presented an appeal to the Canadian courts regarding

Construction Watch: Lofts at 136
The exterior changes to the former Alling & Cory warehouse on Elm at North Division Street may be subtle, but they are nonetheless striking.  The six-story, National Register building is being converted into 88 units of student housing dubbed Lofts at 136.  It is scheduled to open for the fall semester.

Honor Our Fallen Servicemembers This Memorial Day Weekend
I was delighted today to see all the flags flying, in just the small part of the city where I spent my day.  A quick look at the Buffalo News or any local newspaper (or bulletin board around the city, towns, and villages) shows a community full of events this weekend to honor and commemorate our fallen servicemen and servicewomen.

Buffalo is fortunate to have a wealth of outstanding commemorative events,

More art... more art!
After taking a quick Monday afternoon walk with Mark Goldman, it was decided that there were some dead spaces on Allen Street that needed some touch ups in the form of public art. Mark suggested that a series of windows on the Licata Plumbing building would be the perfect place to start. After calling the owner of the building to ensure that the project was legit, Mark made a phone call to the featured artist at Allentown Hardware, Sarah Myers. If you have not seen Sarah's work at the Allentown bistro, then please make it a point to stop in and see

Big Star Rock Star at the Farmers Market
With this warm weather, the popular Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market feels like it's in full bloom despite the limited number of vegetable varieties available this early in the season. Strawberries should be here soon, but for now we are all staying busy with last season's apples, and this season's rhubarb and lettuces. Plus, there's the weekly need for fresh bread and the pantry re-stocking of locally produced basics such as honey, maple and even whole wheat flour.

One thing you don't expect to find at the farmers market are rock stars. Today my visit resulted in the discovery of Big

The Unite Music Festival
Kicking off tonight, the second annual Unite Music Festival is igniting Buffalo's electronic music scene with an unprecedented array of stellar, internationally acclaimed DJs spinning at 20 clubs throughout the weekend.  For anybody who knows anything about electronic music, you know that this is really big for Buffalo. As the electronic scene has been growing in recent years, you might say that this is the culmination of a growing fan base along with seasoned promoters and a solid club base - enough to attract music fans from all over the region.

Performing headlining DJs are:

19 Statues Undergo Conservation Treatment
Nineteen statues are getting some much-needed touch-ups around the city. Russell-Marti Conservation Services, a statue conservation and restoration company based in Missouri, is currently working on the General Daniel Davidson Bidwell statue (photo) after recently completing work on the statue of Columbus at Columbus Park.

It has been eight years since the statues have undergone any maintenance, which means that there is a bit more work to be done than usual. At the same time, the works of art are in good condition and only require the team to remove a bit of corrosion before applying

Hertel is Headstrong
What is it that makes Hertel such a gold star destination for head shops? I would imagine that the homegrown success of Terrapin Station has got to send smoke signals to others looking to open in the neighborhood. Maybe the same strategic location maneuvers that apply to the fast food joints also apply to smoke shops? First there was Terrapin - the head shop has created quite a buzz over the years. Then came Headin' to Hertel, a business that looks like it'll stick around for 20 years or more. Now it looks like Marley's Cigar and Hookah Lounge (next to Romeo and Juliet's) is looking to spark it

Shen Yun a Universal Theme (a reader responds)
A response to The Buffalo News' Review of May 27th's Shen Yun performance
By: Cathy Skora*

I am puzzled how the reviewer of Shen Yun Dance Company for the Buffalo News' Gusto on Friday May 28, 2010 missed the entire point and theme of this performance. The evening was rich with Chinese dance, music, and culture. The dancers were flawless and without exception obviously superbly trained in dance and theater. The choreography was an interesting array of organic patterns, using multi

Baking Bootcamp
Over the last five years, Delish has led cooking demonstration classes that cover all manner of techniques and cuisines. For the most part, it would be a challenge to come up with a culinary scenario that they have not incorporated into their monthly calendar at some point. But one area where they've never really ventured is baking. There are a number of reasons for this, but regardless of what they may be, Delish has determined that the demand and desire for baking classes has hit such a frenzy they cannot deny their fans any longer. Hence, Baking Bootcamp.

Wrembel & Babik Show Both Sides of Gypsy Jazz Coin
By: Mackenzie Lambert

If there was ever an appropriate venue for the Django Reinhardt Centennial Celebration held on May 27th, it would be the Tralf. It provides a satisfying aura as one might have expected from Le Hot Club de France in the 1930's. This event would be lost in a bigger, impersonal venue like HSBC Arena or Shea's.

Headliner Stephane Wrembel & the Django Experiment and Buffalo's own Babik performed in honor of 100 years of Django

2010 Thursday at the Square Schedule Announced
There are a few stories or subjects that we can always expect to generate a large number of comments here on Buffalo Rising. It's just a fact. Posts about pizza, city parking (lots, meters, free zones and ticketing policies), building to the curb and whether or not Whole Foods or Trader Joe's should (or ever will) come to Buffalo seem to get people really excited.

Another popular subject that always inspires debate are the annual
