Rockin' At the Knox Returns: Rufus Wainwright Headlines

Rockin’ At the Knox Returns: Rufus Wainwright Headlines
After skipping last year for unknown reasons, the Albright Knox is re-introducing Rockin' at the Knox with some interesting acts.  Rufus Wainwright, the 36 year old Canadian-American singer-songwriter, will headline the June 18th affair.  Rufus Wainwright, son of singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright, has well-regarded hits including Cigaretts and Chocoate Milk, Dinner at Eight, and Barcelona.

In addition to Wainwright, the Albright has booked The National - an indie band out of Brooklyn - to open.  If you're not familir with The National, you should take a listen.  Pitchfork Media called their 2005 album Alligator one of the top albums of the 2000's.

The Albright notice indicates there will be 'much more' so stay tuned as more bands may be added to the lineup. Tickets for this year's Rockin' will go on sale to Albright members at noon Tuesday (April 20th) at the Gallery Admissions Desk.  General sales will start April 26th and will cost $40 in advance, $45 at the door.

Rockin' at the Knox has had a meandering history.  Their most highly-regarded show was Wilco and My Morning Jacket - a show that many attendees considered one of the most impressive Buffalo concerts in recent history.  Then, as if turning away from the progressive headliners of the 2005 show, the Albright had Blondie headline the 2006 Rockin'.  In 2007, the Albright seemingly split the difference between classic and progressive and booked Elvis Costello with openers Paulo Nutini and Feist.  In 2008, the Gallery welcomed the B-52's with Metric and Ben Lee.  And last year - well, no one seems to know what happened last year.

The Albright should be commended for getting Rockin' at the Knox back on everyone's schedule for this summer and for leaning towards more progressive bands.  Now let's see how the rest of the lineup shakes out.

Rockin at the Knox continues it's rapid descent into obscurity. This annual concert event started out with what may have been the best concert tandem this City has seen in 20 years with Wilco/My Morning Jacket only to rapidly devolve into a Thursday at the Square show with a $40 price tag.

Have to agree with you on that, went once {B-52s] and was really looking forward to the evening. After two hours of being at a high school kegger, we left and never even saw the main act.

I am a huge music fan...yet can't tell you one thing about Rufus Wainwright. What a letdown! Look on the brightside, I'm guessing Robby Goo's "Music Is Art" will return this Fall.

Besides the fact he opened for the Goo Goo Dolls in Niagara square and is referred to as the greatest songwriter on the planet by Elton John? Just because he's isn't over commercialized doesn't make him a bad choice for this event. You people don't have a clue about music.

Rufus has been a headliner at Carnegie Hall and Town Hall in NYC-I think he can play AKAG. I recommend getting to know him/his music. He is amazing.

Not sure how playing Carnegie Hall or Town Hall reflects on one's ability to play the Knox one way or the other.

I would note that a cursory glance at Town Hall's schedule shows Jacob Dylan and Ben Folds doing individual shows...seems to me both these acts played Tats in recent years. (Which brings me right back to my initial argument)

Good lord, those comments can't be serious. The National are one of the top bands in the country right now.

I know, what the hell. I was lucky enough to see The National at Coachella two years ago, and they blew my eyes through the back of my head. Rufus is just the frosting on the cake.

To be clear, I am not making any judgments on these acts musically.

I happen to enjoy The National and would argue that they should be the headliner out of these two....here's a great cover they did of one of there biggest fans....

My argument is that the event seems to be thrown together with no thought whatsoever.

Wainwright is premiering his Opera in Toronto a few nights earlier and will play 2 shows there and then do the Knox as a throw in, a marriage of convenience.

Buffalo often has to rely on throw-ins for bigger acts leaving us with bands who are playing there 3rd show in 4 nights (Pearl Jam)....not ideal but we are who we are.

The acts that fit the 'Knox' mold aren't the bigger acts.

Rockin the Knox could have and should have been different. The powers that be, instead of using the success of the Wilco/MMJ show rested on there laurels the following year effectively neutering any chance the event had of being taken seriously by National touring acts.

As Jeff Tweedy said "This is Ideal!" Well Jeff, it once was.

Fair enough. I really don't know anything about the set up of the event itself.

And I completely agree that the National should be headlining this show. Having them in town in such a high profile way is really a great opportunity for Buffalo to prove up it's cultural relevance a bit.

They really are probably in the top 5 of the most respected acts around right now. Especially with their new album coming out in a couple weeks, this is a timely booking.

The 40 dollar ticket price might be a off-putting to some but that's about on par with the 35 dollar tag on the National/Beach House show at Prospect Park in Brooklyn this July. Plus, here you get to support a local institution.

A. Thursday at the Square is nothing to sneeze at -- they regularly get seriously quality touring acts. It's not like they're pulling some local cover bands.

B. Rufus Wainwright unknown? I'm surprised by how often he's referenced as Loudon's son, given that his fame may have surpassed his dad's.

In any case, if you don't want to see him, don't go. Those who do will.

Rufus Wainwright will not disappoint. If you want to hear an "over the top" great album, get "Release the Stars". I have travelled near and far to see him, and he is great.

You can check out on YouTube the whole family, including his mom, dad, aunts, and sisters.
They're an incredibly talented funky family.

Here's more from Wainwright's newest...gorgeous stuff but for an outdoor "Rock," show?

Better keep the Crisis Services Hotline open....

The guy's got a huge range. He'll be fine outside. I saw him at the cavernous Place d'Arts in Montreal. He can belt it out. Check out "Release the Stars".

I think this is a great show to get Rockin’ the Knox back on it's feet. Since the AK is doing poorly financially it is a bit of a risk to put on a large outdoor show when they’re not in the business of doing so. If you think it’s lacking this year buy a ticket for this show and hopefully next year they’ll be in a better place financially to book bigger acts. Personally I think these are exactly the acts they should book. In my opinion this will be better than any Thursday at the Square show this year. If you don’t know who Rufus Wainright is you definitely heard his music in a movie and didn’t know it, he has songs in a lot of soundtracks, as does his father. The National is one of the better bands out there now as well.

I don't know that I am saying "bigger," is better. My Morning Jacket had a college following and not much more when they came and Wilco was more of a cult at that time (Though they had recently come off there first show as a headliner at MSG)and there were plenty of people asking 'who?' for that one as well....but they were both on the verge however and MMJ also went on to headling at MSG.

The following Knox years were nothing more than "Name," grabs and oldie shows reminiscent to Kiss Bashes-Blondie,the B52's, even the one interesting collective of Elvis Costello/Feist/Paolo Nutini was a bit of a trainwreck though weather certainly didn't help. (Switching the event from Spring to Fall smacked of an inability to book acts)

There was a cohesion to the original bill that has been sorely lacking and this year's pairing is probably the worst as that goes.

For example, in 2007 an Elvis Costello/Diana Krall pairing would have been a much more interesting pairing to explore rather then tossing in a "hot," act like Feist. (Costello himself was doing 3 styles of tours in that same year-w/Dylan; w/Allen Toussaint; w/The Imposters so can be forgiven for the one-off Solo show with Steve Nieve of that year)

So what I am looking for is a billing that could truly be called an "event," not just whatever bands are available lumped together.

Let's also not forget that this event is not far out....people make plans. That same weekend you can go to the Rochester International Jazz Festival(Jeff Beck headlines the night of the Knox event)or the "The Great Escape Festival " on Olympic Island in Toronto featuring;
Pavement, Band Of Horses,Beach House, Broken Social Scene and Timber Timbre. Two well thought out events that have been on sale for months......

I don’t disagree with you. My point was that this isn’t as terrible as it could be. To my knowledge the National have never played here and I’m sure will draw just as much if not more than RW. Rufus Wainwright falls into a nice in between category that caters both to the adult contemporary audience while relevant enough for younger folks to like.
If I was booking this I probably would have shot for a band like the New Pornographers, Vampire Weekend or perhaps Dirty Projectors as the headliner. But alas this is not my show and I’m sure their budget is more than half eaten up by the production costs rather than the talent cost. Not to mention it’s touring season and these bands are all over the place and Buffalo is probably not considered a hot bed of music to them, although it should be.

Pavement reuniting....I'm conflicted.

Some things were so good you really just want to leave them be, as was. I sure hope they sound good.

Maybe we can all put on skinny jeans and deep v-neck
t-shirts and ride our fixed gear bikes down to the Albright and demand they book Animal Collective or at least Grizzley Bear or Panda Bear. All kidding aside they would be great but I think the average attendee will like the National a bit more if they've never heard them.

True that but at 40 bones a ticket the people who need their minds opened will probably pass this one by if they were the headliner. I’d be there for sure though.

I'm a music student down at SUNY Fredonia, and I always think how unfortunate it is to be the annual "FredFest" coordinator (our spring rock concert). No matter what act you bring, a large portion of the student body will attack their taste for music. Apparently this transcends to even the world of the international high art (even if the only association is in the venue). The point of the event is to have fun... Go in with an open mind and try to see what others see in this music. Same goes for the Thursday in the Square.

The event formerly known as Rockin' at the Knox is what some of us would like to see come back (yes, it needs a new name). That elegant evening of Buffalo dance and artsy bands scatterd throughout the gallery with the terrific art in the elegant space inside.

Standing on blacktop and using porta potties is not what I want to pay $40. for, whoever the acts are. A beautiful museum district it is, Artpark it is not.
