Plans moving forward for new boathouse on Buffalo River

Plans moving forward for new boathouse on Buffalo River
It has been confirmed that the newly formed Buffalo Scholastic Rowing Association will be constructing a boathouse on Ohio Street, over the Buffalo River. In what appears to be an amicable split from the West Side Rowing Club, schools such as the Buffalo Seminary have made deals to row with the new club, which hopes to be up and running for a 2010 summer program and the coming scholastic season.

The boathouse, which will be named in memory of Patrick Paladino, late son of developer Carl Paladino, has been in the works for over a year. Currently, it exists in the form of a cleared lot and a temporary Quonset hut, which was built last week. Directors, led by Seymour Knox IV, indicate that the club currently has docks ready to be installed, and rowing shells and motorboats standing by, but is waiting on funding to put up a more permanent structure. In the meantime, they are offering space to tenants, and anyone looking to stash a boat.

At the turn of the century, Buffalo's waterfronts boasted rowing clubs in the double digits, but since then options have diminished, with West Side Rowing predominating the scene. Those involved with Buffalo Scholastic hope that another facility will expand Buffalo's potential to accommodate the resurgent sport, and provide fresh opportunities and resources for student athletes. With the ultimate goal to "improve rowers' lives one stroke at a time," the organization promises to get active in the local community, and to provide alternative programs to meet the diverse interests of the greater public. Keep an eye out for a coming website, and news of coming events.

The Buffalo Hiking Group first led a very successful historic hike from the Inner Harbor along the Buffalo River this past February. It was at that time that they announced a second hike, which was to be scheduled in the spring. In keeping with the cel... Read More

Travelrrr - There is absolutely a market for it. It's a rapidly growing sport and the FLW Boathouse only added room for about 10 boats.

BuffaloTrek - WSRC and FLW are separate boathouses.

As a former rower, this is fantastic! An additional club/boathouse will ease the time and equipment strains at WSRC and give rowers more water and practice time.

Yes, the FLW (which holds about 18 boats, not 10) is a separate physical boathouse from the WSRC boathouse--but they are both operated and home to the WSRC.

Sweet! It's nice to see some activity on the river. I like kayaking over there.

Good for them!

I always wondered why Buffalo only had one club. I used to row on the Mohawk River in Schenectady. There were five clubs on a two mile stretch of river and, amazingly, they all got along. Most were clubs for highschoolers but there was one adult club as well. It was great.

West side is a wonderful club and does a great job promoting rowing to young people. But, it's so busy, especially in the spring. Kids and boats everywhere.

It's about time someone started another club. I think a little competition is good and it will make both clubs strive to be the best they can be.

Great example. I'm sure the $30 million dollar price tag and 30k sq feet will fit both well from a budgetary and space perspective. Maybe Frank Gehry can do it or Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Or, perhaps BSRA might work within their budget and focus their spend on practicality and usage versus looks. Or they can build another frank lloyd boathouse which is both impractical and virtually useless from a utility standpoint, but it does looks great. I mean you can't even get a boat in the boat house w/o turning it sideways. Architects suck.

Ah, hmmm, will their be new, high-brow graffiti to go with the new house? Excuse me for not being more supportive for yet another project geared for the children of those "doing pretty damn good". Maybe they could build a boat house on Knox Farm, combining the best of Polo and Rowing!! Ah yes!

You might want to read up on the project your "not supporting" before posting comments like these. Because WSRC's latest project is geared towards children from the Buffalo Public School system, giving anyone, despite financial disposition, an equal opportunity to row.

-The current WSRC men and women's club teams, which make up a good majority of the club, are made up of all public schools around the area.

There was a "Mutual Rowing Club" at 150 South Street, in 1894; I wonder if there were others in that area.

This project would not be moving forward without Carl Paladino.

Why hasn't this been reported on any of the local TV news stations or newspapers?

Thank you Carl Paladino for your support on this project.

Yes, thanks Carl, for destroying needed buffer areas to control erosion and disturbing toxic sediments with a backhoe. I'm a big fan of community development, but not at the cost of environmental (and for that matter, public) health.

Kidding about what? There was near-primary growth forest on that land before it was all cleared (probably illegally). I would be delighted if you could point me to one positive thing Paladino has done for the environment.

Do you see the bare wood blocking the Combined Sewer Overflow (one of the largest in the county) just off the Ohio St. Boat Launch? Where do you think that wood came from?

Which brings me to another point... of all of the beautiful spots on the Buffalo River for a boathouse, why the hell pick one right next to one of the most active and largest sewer outfalls in the city?
