Carl Paladino: He Sends Emails

Carl Paladino: He Sends Emails
WNYMedia has found and published controversial emails allegedly sent by Carl Paladino, Buffalo real estate magnate and newly announced candidate for Governor of New York. The emails contain rather crude racist and sexist material.  WNYMedia's report has been picked up by countless national sites including Huffington Post, Talking Points Memo, Opposing Views and the NY Daily News and, as a result, the amount of traffic to WNYMedia's Paladino's story has reportedly crashed their servers multiple times throughout the day.  And now, the Buffalo News has chimed in with an article on the controversy.

The emails, which are too crude to publish here, contain images of Africa tribesmen dancing entitled "Obama Inaugaration Rehearsal" and an email showing chimpanzees doing an Irish dance entitled "proof the Irish discovered Africa" and another email depicting bestiality.

Paladino's campaign manager, Michael Caputo, has responded by saying "Many of these emails he received were off-color, some were politically incorrect, few represented his own opinion, and almost none of them were worth remembering. We're not surprised the political establishment feels threatend by Carl's drive to take Albany back for taxpayers."

He went on to say that "It figures that members of the party who brought us record taxes, record spending and record debt would want to change the topic from reform to having sex with horses and S&M parlors."

Of course, we all knew Paladino's campaign for governor would be unorthodox and off-color.  But few of us expected he would be at the center of this many controversies this quickly.  We're not 3 weeks from Paladino's already-notorious comparison of the passing of health reform to 9/11 and now he's in the middle of another firestorm.

Paladino, a love-him-or-hate-him figure if ever there was one, was a long shot to win the governor's race prior to the recent controversies. Now, one wonders if his campaign is over before it really started.  Maybe Paladino could benefit from Mayor Brown's offer of hug therapy.

Does this change your view of Paladino? Should these emails have been released?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

WTH is it with republicans and sex with animals? I honestly can't think of what kind of people wouldn't respond to such an email with horror (I mean, I assumed, before today, that such a video would be illegal) and delete it at the least? What kind of wacko would FORWARD IT? Seriously, why do their brains go there, again and again? Lets add Carl Palamino :) to Man-on-Dog Santorum and Sex-with-Ducks Robertson in the library of twisted people who should not lead ANYTHING.

Paladino was a Democrat for 30 years. He switched to the Republican party just a few years ago.

So think twice before throwing those generalizations around.

BRLifer, what does not "real" mean?

Paladino registered himself as a Dem for almost his entire adult life until recently, and by far he has donated more money to Dem candidates and the Dem party over the years than he has to Repubs. All public record.

On another note, I agree with bflobr's comment that it seems off-topic to have Byron Brown's picture in this article. Not that it matters much but it's strange.

I don't agree. He was very much a Democrat in name and action up until about 8 years ago. He was a big supporter of Bill Clinton, both in terms of local campaigning and contributions. Granted, he was never a truly far left leaning liberal, but I don't think he was a right wing conservative until people started to listen to him a few years ago. He has an audience that strokes his enormous ego, and he says what they want to hear. I personally believe he would do the same thing if there was a far left party that would give him the time of day. He has a lot to gain from an adminstration led by Democrats, probably more than a Republican led regime. Look at where he has made his money, and look at who sponsors the bills that make it possible for him to make his money.

I am not a fan of Paladino, never was nor will I be in the future. I am laughing at his stupidity and the uncloaking of the real Carl. I am sure that Phil Rumore is laughing his a$$ off right now, with the same smug satisfaction the Blackrocklifer has in his commments.

BRLifer, the many Democrats who Paladino supported weren't just locals. You can claim to read other people's minds all you want, but his public record is a matter of fact.

Paladino chose to register as a Democrat for most of his life and has generously donated to Democrats at the fedeal level including
Hillary Clinton, Richard Gephardt,
John Kerry, Al Gore,
Charles Schumer, Eliot Spitzer,
Louise Slaughter, Eric Massa, ...

All of those are staunch liberal Democrats who aren't from Buffalo. Why would someone who isn't a Democrat support candiates like Gore, Gephardt, Clinton, Massa, etc.?

The facts are Paladino for may decades registered as a Democrat and supported many Democrat politicians at the national level then only recently switched affiliation - perhaps planning ahead for this run for NY gov as an R.

I can't blame you for trying to distance your party from him, but I don't see how Buffalo being a "Democratic city" would cause Paladino to favor only Dem candidates for president until his recent supposed conversion.

There's no reported donations from him to any Republican presidential candidates until this last election, but he donated to at least 5 Democrat presidential candidates previously - Kerry, Gore, Gephardt, and each of the Clintons.
http://www.buffalonews.com/2010/04/04/1008510_paladino-gave-cash-to-variety.html

He sounds like a mainstream loyal Democrat. His insensitivity fits in with leaders like Robert Byrd, Jesse Jackson, Harry Reid, Al Sharpton, etc.

Paladino even supported and donated to Democrat Eric Massa. Massa wasn't connected to Buffalo at all. His district doesn't even touch Erie or Niagara counties. It isn't even close enough to tickle Erie or Niagara, or mess up their hair.

"If you look at his personal philosophy and his public statements here is clearly on the far right."

It is fortunate for the Paladino campaign to have this early opportunity to demonstrate how to strip political correctness of its destructive powers. Like myself, I know that other Paladino supporters recognize political correctness is a societal disease based on intimidation and personal destruction. This is exactly the type of thing that we are so upset about and standing up against. We are mad as hell about political correctness.

Political correctness makes eggshells out of innocent normal behavior hoping to spring a “gotcha” trap and accuse you of the most horrific contrivances - almost always sex perversion or racism. Make no mistake: an example of healthy normal behavior is not political correctness. No one is safe from political correctness. Until now.

Carl Paladino understands that the best way to destroy political correctness is to refuse to participate. Simply refuse to give it any power. That is how it will be destroyed. Look it in the eye and don’t flinch - two things that are easy to do when you are mad as hell.

What is this nonsense about political correctness and new-speak? Insulting and boorish behavior is now the only method to affect political change? That's absurd. Change does not happen by inspiring the worst in others. People respond to hope not division.

NorPark, you cannot "serve the people" (all the people) when you exhibit the kind of disdain for African Americans and women that Paladino does in these emails. And I suspect with him, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

There is no place in this city and state for bigots like Paladino. And he certainly is not fit to be Governor.

We should not be making excuses for his disgusting behavior.

Can we look at the real issue here?

He has done little to nothing for this city. He does nothing with his properties and the greystone has been left to rot. He is representing old rich white guys Who can't seem to understand that this country is a mix of poor, white , black, etc. This was how our country was founded. You want change then don't blame Obama, blame the last fifty years of terrible politics that have gotten us this far.
He is a disgrace to buffalo and his attitude on life and the way he treats his properties are a direct result.

'Rich white folks' know a thing or two about money, like how to preserve and create it. If a significant portion of them are concerned the country is on a path that will lead to fiscal insolvency, then I'd agree, this is 'change and progress' even I would resist.

Those that have experience creating wealth (or saw their grandparents build it) realize the playing field has changed (world wide, not the illusory one that the left thinks they can impact). We have less, and will have less in the future. I'm concerned about that because it makes things more difficult on the east side, the west side, allentown, and yes, even Spaulding (sp?) Lake.

As a proud Buffalo city resident and home owner I am embarrassed. The 'Tea Party' and Paladino's actions are leaving a negative view on Buffalo and it's residents. At this point, party line really doesn't matter. What matters is the reputation of Buffalo and it's people and that seems to be going down hill right now, damage control please.

Yes, he might be "mad as hell," but there are better ways of making a change in the state. One idea - some bi-partisan policies - maybe working together?

anyone who is trying to defend paladino sounds just as idiotic as he did during all the interviews where he started asking is acceptable for other people to do blah blah blah, the whole issue with this story is that he doesn't think he did anything wrong and is only apologizing for the fact that people were offended, so he's only sorry for getting caught, everyone at one point in their life has probably laughed at or made a joke that you probably wouldn't have in mixed company but i think that most of those exchanges surpass what most people would ever show or say to others, whoever sent those emails are bigots and it just shows poor choice that he is associated with people like that, this has nothing to do with what other government officials do, all everything with his feelings and beliefs, he must have found them amusing to forward them and therefore he is a bigot too simple as that......

I think anyone will agree the jokes were tasteless but passing a "black" joke around isn't necessarily racist. I mean if you laugh at Dave Chappelle when he tells a joke about blacks, whites, asians, hispanics, etc., does that make you racist? not really. The real issue is whether or not this behavior will continue if he gets elected. If so it shouldn't be accepted since he is supposed to set an example. And various entities publishing the jokes verbatim is no better than forwarding them around like Carl did in my opinion.

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

I am not sure that laughing at a Dave Chappelle or Chris Rock observation makes you a racist. That said, a white guy who repeats one of these jokes to his white friends may be seen as a racist. It really depends on the source and the context. Some of the email that Carl forwarded were not intended to be racist, but when retitled and forwarded, they are indeed racist. The same with some of the sexist jokes and videos. I have no comment on the horse.

That was my point, that repeating a "racist" joke does not necessarily make you racist, especially if you are not the original author. I do not see a difference between say sending along a youtube clip of Dave Chappelle or one of these jokes. If he were already in office it would be a different story but in the construction industry, which Carl is indeed heavily involved in, it is very commonplace to forward such emails. That doesn't make it right but it certainly explains why he may not see any wrong doing. In hindsight it may not have been a smart move on his part to send along these emails if he had any plans a while back to run for office. Furthermore I don't see how his party affiliation makes this right or wrong in any way, that's a bit of a stretch if you ask me.

Yes, repeating a racist joke makes you racist, especially if you are of a different race. You are belittling a group based on what they look like.

Disgusting slurs are very offensive and have no place in this country or anywhere.

I listen to Tom Joyner every morning and love his show. I enjoy the commentary and the humor, but I would not be able to repeat much of what I hear because I am white. I make gay jokes with friends, but would be offended if a straight person made the same type of comments around me. My female friends often make derogatory comments about boyfriends and husbands, but I would not feel comfortable making similar comments about women. We are only allowed to make comments about the rich white men, for the most part. We can call them elitists who are out of touch and incompetent. We can make fun of their fat guts and balding hairlines, their lack of fashion sense or their lack of emotional intelligence. This is the stuff that most TV commercials, sitcoms, and cartoons are made of.

It is a double standard, but it is an accepted double standad in our society.

today's thought experiment for the terribly oppressed howard goldmans among us:

if your white skin, xy chromosomes, and material security have truly become such a barrier to freedom, respect, career success, and self-esteem, how much would you pay for the privilege and advantages of *magic wand waved here* becoming black (or hispanic), female, and low-income?

If you spend any time listening to right-wing talk radio, this behavior fits the profile of those who're entertained by images and language which demeans others. I don't object to laughing at my own shortcomings - of which there are many - but if it's offered up by a group who share a common ideology and belief system, it becomes "labeling" and I think we know where that leads.

If Carl is serious about leadership, he'll give up the "forward key addition."

The thing that gets me is that anyone who frequents the Buffalo bars in any capacity knows that Mr. Paladino is certainly no saint. Is anyone really shocked by any of these emails? If he was going to get my vote, it is because he has repeatedly saved me 50 cents at the former 190 toll both, not because of his character, which I already knew was a fairly run of the mill rich white guy who likes to chase tail and make racist jokes to get a laugh. I know about a million guys at least as bad if not worse, including myself at times.

Bottom line, I wasn't going to vote for Paladino, Cuomo is a D***HEAD, and I sure can't imagine having Patterson back in. So i just hope somebody better comes along.
