Hertel Avenue - Spring Cleaning!
Tomorrow, Saturday the 1st the North Park Community Association will be participating in the Great American Cleanup by hosting its first (hopefully annual) Hertel Avenue street cleanup. The heart of North Park is Hertel's commercial strip. Spring is finally here so it is time for the community to get together, put winter behind us, and spruce up our commercial street for the warm weather. We want our commercial street to be in tip-top shape to support and attract new visitors and patrons for its businesses. This is one way that we can start the year off on the right foot.

We would like to thank both the City of Buffalo and the Hertel North Buffalo Business Association for their support. We will be meeting at the public parking lot at the corner of Norwalk Ave. and Hertel Ave. at 9:30am to organize and send out teams to different locations. We are hoping to clean up all of Hertel between Starin and Delaware Avenues. Please consider helping out for just a couple hours in the morning.

Keep up the Earth Day spirit with CUFF
Come and keep up the Earth Day spirit Saturday with the Curtis Urban Farm Foundation as it plants trees on the East Side and hosts a benefit concert at Cafe Allegro (tomorrow).

CUFF is among several organizations instrumental in farming on the East Side as means to improve its economic position. "We're trying to make use of the vacant lots on the East Side by using the lots to grow fruits and vegetables" said Bernadette Pawlak, CUFF director of marketing and public relations.

Zombie Cakes with Zilly
I never know what's next with cake artist Zilly Rosen. For years she turned out some of our area's most inventive cakes from the tiny kitchen at Dolci bakery. When demand grew, there were signs that she would open her own shop with rumors of a cupcake bar. This magical bakery opened on Elmwood almost a year ago to great success, but during the time it took for her to secure her building and finalize her business plan, she became an overnight media sensation. Her all-cupcake homage to then presidential hopeful, Barack Obama, was all over the papers.

Fun & Free @ Queen City Bookstore
By: Hugh O' Donnell

Looking forward to this summer's blockbuster comic book movies? Looking for something fun to do, but don't have a lot of money to spend? Want to help support an independent local business? This Saturday, May 1st is Free Comic Book Day, and local institution Queen City Bookstore is celebrating.

Free Comic Book Day is a day--always the first Saturday in May--when independent comics shops across North America give out comics for free. The event is put together by publishers, distributors, artists, and shops throughout the comics industry, and

See Buffalo Bushido Tonight!
Expect a swell of Buffalo pride at the Market Arcade tonight as "Buffalo Bushido" makes its local premiere at 8:00 PM (see BRO interview).  Local filmmaker Peter McGennis will be on hand to introduce his independent feature film that passed through hundreds of local hands and was filmed entirely in Buffalo.  "Buffalo Bushido" has been called the best Buffalo film of the past decade and there has not been a film that puts as much of Buffalo on the big screen (and in positive light).  It's

Eaton CHOCOLATE
The corner of Hertel and Parker is soon to be home to a chocolate shop with a built in custom edge. After speaking with Ingeri Eaton, owner of Eaton Chocolate, it was clear that the fledgling enterprise was setting out to tantalize the tastebuds of 'sweet-tooths' from around the city. I was curious as to how Ingeri got her start in the world of chocolate creations, and like so many other industrious Buffalonians, it started off with a whole lot of passion and persistence. Unlike a lot of entrepreneurs, in order to get the business rolling, Ingeri will be keeping her factory job during the day while

Sabres: Simply Not Good Enough
What else is there to say about the Sabres early exit from the playoffs?  To some of us, the writing was on the wall at the trade deadline.  By acquiring Raffi Torres and nothing else, Sabres management telegraphed their belief that this team wasn't good enough to make a run for the Cup so there was no sense mortgaging the future to bolster this year's roster. Of course, that seems to be the Sabres approach every year.  No matter how good and hot their goalie is

“Peg’s Park” Project Progessing Post-Haste

OK, I know it's officially "Buffalo River Fest Park", but folks "in the know" (I'm looking at you, Buffalo Rising reader) have always called it "Peg's Park" after the energetic head of the Valley Community Association, Margaret "Peg" Overdorf.  Yesterday the long-discussed plans for the park took another step toward construction with a meeting onsite for prospective bidders.  One of the firms will be selected next

Thursday Book Review: U is for Undertow By Sue Grafton
Buffalo & Erie County Public Library Staff Review by Meg Cheman:

Recovered memory or false memory?  A recent newspaper story about an old kidnapping has released childhood memories in Michael Sutton, who claims he saw two men burying a suspicious bundle at the time of the kidnapping twenty years earlier and now thinks it was the missing girl. He hires Private Investigator Kinsey Millhone to find out, but Kinsey soon discovers that Sutton has a history of false accusations.  Fortunately, there is enough thread for Kinsey to unravel, compelling her to

Cobblestone Criterium Twilight Series Returns
For the second year in a row, the Cobblestone Criterium Twilight Series is about to turn a segment of quiet downtown streets into a hotbed of activity. The first race of the season kicks off next Thursday, with the B-race beginning at 6:30pm and the A-race starting shortly before 7:30pm.

Race Promoter Frank Grillo told me that this year is going to be better than the last due to the amount of interest in the race as well as the extended season. "We've expanded it to eleven races," he told me. "Or three races a month over the course of the

Be There: Saturday’s Artists & Models
What Tony Billoni once conceived as a simple but titillating after-party, Hallwalls has since transformed into one of the most well-attended and gratifying parties in Buffalo. With plenty to see, hear, feel and taste, guests of Artists & Models: Stimulus will interact with artists and models of all disciplines and genders for a night of fun in a west side warehouse. As

Nada, Zero, Zilch, Zipcar
Yesterday's announcement that University at Buffalo had chosen Zipcar as its provider of car sharing services was a bit of a surprise. Although Zipcar has been around for a few more years and thus has the ability to show up Buffalo Car Share in tech and the number of car models offered, homegrown Buffalo CarShare had stated that it was up to the challenge if given the opportunity. If UB had stated that the three campuses were going to be included as test markets for the Zipcar plug-in hybrids, as the company is doing in San Francisco, then maybe I would have understood the decision. Trinity’s Annual White Elephant Sale
Shoppers take your mark! One of the most anticipated rummage sales is coming up this weekend starting April 30th and ending May 2nd. I recently learned that this sale has been going strong for over 100 years. What makes the sale so appealing is the way much of the merchandise is acquired. Instead of waiting for people to drop off old junk from their garages, a team of volunteers actually scours the area looking for quality donations. Shoppers come to pick up furniture, handbags, shoes and even artwork.

Proceeds from the sale go towards Trinity Church - the same place where the shopping

Platform Summation for Dr. Patricia E. Devis
As promised, following is the platform for Dr. Patricia E. Devis, who is running for North District seat for the Buffalo Board of Education, along with these candidates posted on April 25. Now it's time for you to decide who to vote for. Take the time to learn about candidates in your respective districts, and do your city a favor by getting out and voting for school board elections on May 4!

New to the world of elected office, Devis was moved to run by an urgent sense of the need for "regular

Buffalo Bar Crawl
Every couple of years Best of Buffalo Promotions hosts a bar crawl that is intended to bring added publicity to the downtown bars while generating money for projects within the Buffalo Entertainment District (bars within walking distance of Chippewa). This Friday, April 30th, 20 bars will entertain an estimated 4000 people as they hop (or crawl) from bar to bar. For $10 participants are handed 'stein', aka a plastic mug, and given the assignment to hit each bar, otherwise known as checkpoints, where they will find free cover and $2-$3 drink specials. Upon completion of the task a t-shirt is issued

Common Council Items of Interest
For those of you who can't make it to the weekly Common Council meeting, following is the edited briefing. We included the topics that relate to larger segments of the community. From this week's meeting as provided by the council, here is the summary:

The Council adopted a resolution sponsored by Council Members Michael Kearns, David Franczyk, and Curtis Haynes, Jr. approving the installation of a permanent historic marker in front of 168 Edward Street, the birthplace home of Frances Folsom Cleveland. Frances Folsom was a former First Lady of the United States of America

New and Old Finds Off Main Street
To think that I've passed by the corner of Main Street and East Utica hundreds of times and never noticed this large sculpture before is a surprise. It's found on a grassy hill just beyond the Metro Rail station, yet clearly visible from Main Street. I asked a few artists if they knew anything about the sculptor and no one was even aware that the sculpture even existed. My thought is that the sculpture is part of the 1985 series of commissioned works created in conjunction with the building of the Metro Rail. It's found near a bus loop where nobody would ever set foot unless they spied it in the
