U.S.S. Brings "Ray Finkle" Back to His Homeland

U.S.S. Brings “Ray Finkle” Back to His Homeland
One of Canada's most prized acts is coming to Western New York (Mohawk Place, March 6th) to pump up the crowd with their incredibly dynamic versatile sound, ingenious lyrics, and sense of inimitable humor.

U.S.S. (otherwise known as Ubiquitous Synergy Sound) emits layers of pop, rock, dance, ska, hip hop, and incorporates almost every other genre out there in the atmosphere into their music. With Ashley "Boo-Schultz" Bucholtz on vocals, guitar and the ehru, and his partner, Jason "Human Kebab" Parsons, contributing on turntables, drums and bass, they are irresistibly overachieving.

Featuring flamboyant choir back-up singers, a trio comprised of a chicken, frog, and elephant banging on percussion, Cirque du Soleil-type hula-hoop twirlers and num-chuck swingers, and other juggling unicycle-riding circus folk, U.S.S. knows how to put on a show. In their video Laces Out (embedded below), this is exactly the kind of chaotic off-the-wall ridiculously over-done yet likeable routine they present to their audience.

On top of this overload of entertainment they also showcase a slew of different dancers in their video, such as box-headed robots, breakers, skeletons, ending the entire spectacular with a bang...literally.

The song itself was inspired by the 1994 comedy film Ace Venture Pet Detective, which casted the still green, but nevertheless hilarious Jim Carrey in his earlier days of cinema. The term "laces out," as most know who have watched the movie, derives from the character Ray Finkle. His delusional phrase which he scribbles all over his bedroom walls, is targeted at Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins, for holding the football with the laces out, causing Finkle to miss the Super Bowl field goal. Funny thing is, Finkle, who is portrayed in the movie, was actually inspired by Buffalo Bills player Scott Norwood, who some blame for losing the Super Bowl XXV game for the team in 1984.

Upon researching the name of the song as it relates to the movie, I also found many other bands who have adopted the movie as inspiration for their songs. Metalcore band The Judas Cradle has a song entitled "Laces Out Marino," while grindcore band Tower of Rome named a song after a line in the movie, "Does He Have a Name, or Should I Call Him Lawyer?"

Tangents aside, U.S.S. is playing Mohawk Place at 47 East Mohawk Street on Saturday, March 6th, at 7PM. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. The show is for ages 16 and up. For more information on the Mohawk Place concert, go to the Town Ballroom website.
