Tomorrow, the City of Buffalo will initiate (finally) a Domestic Partner Registry!

Tomorrow, the City of Buffalo will initiate (finally) a Domestic Partner Registry!
What does this mean? According to Kitty Lambert (OUTSpoken for Equality) it's a great step, but at the same time it's not enough. And why is it not enough? Because there are still politicians who continue to deny equal rights to the LGBT community. From Kitty:

First, I want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of both Councilman Rivera and Councilman LoCurto. Progress in our city has been slow and arduous.

We are the LAST major municipality to have this benefit offered to it's employees in NY State.

Initially it was just the registry that had been approved, but now the benefit end of it has been passed (with one 'NO' vote.... Thanks Demone Smith). The benefit provision excludes opposite gender couples. The registry is open to both same and opposite gender couples.

The registry was never signed into law by the Mayor... but there were enough votes that his signature was not required. It became automatic after 30 days... tomorrow (Wed. March 31st, 2010) it begins.

The Benefit end of this does not immediately go into effect. The Mayor may, again, let the benefit package "fall" into law. If not it would go into effect when it was signed into law.

My partner, Cheryle Rudd and I are suppose to be the first to register tomorrow. I will be staying at City Hall all day to see how many people actually take advantage of the REGISTRY end of it. It will not (ever) give the two of us anything more that a $40 "note" that says we are registered as domestic partners... Cheryle finds this VERY funny as she knows that getting me to do ANYthing domestic is rare. It WILL benefit anyone who is considered a City Employee... eventually... IF they are in a same gender relationship. The Mayor feels opposite gender individuals should marry. (This makes me really glad I am gay! I would really hate to have some guy that didn't pay my bills, or know my reasons why I can't/won't marry to tell me I must.... whoops, the Senate is telling me just the opposite and it's because I AM gay!)

To register at City Hall on the 13th floor, a couple must provide $40, BOTH of their birth certificates, Social Security Cards, and Picture IDs, something that shows that they cohabit and are financially interdependent (such as a bank statement with both names on it, Utility bills with the same address on them, a landlord statement, a mortgage or rental/lease agreement).

THIS IS A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is filed with the City and kept until the couple voids the registration.

Part of me is thrilled. But a greater part of me is saddened by the fact that this was done with a vein of discrimination and exclusion, the very thing that we as LGBT Americans are fighting.

We, in the LGBT community, do not want special treatment. We don't want different treatment. We want to be included in the SAME laws that include STRAIGHT-SEX couples. Equally.

BRO: Here's the list of councilmembers. You know who to thank and who to admonish. If you have two minutes to speak for your rights, or the rights of others, then by all means (I added the links), send off your approvals or disapprovals. For good measure, here's the Mayor's email address: Mail@ch.ci.buffalo.ny.us... if anyone has a better one, then please add it.

Wow, someone has not been watching their re-runs of Will and Grace. Gays and Lesbians are supposed to be thin. The float looks more like bars holding them back from the all you can eat pizza&wing bar than partnership benefits.

This whole thing really makes me cringe with embarrassment. In today's world must there still be parades and floats with spandex and leather and all the other stereotypes. I mean if one is fighting to be free of prejudice, stereotypes and labels then does it make sense to have a parade and a float that flaunts exactly those labels and stereotypes.

Society is benefited from all forms of domestic partnerships and they should not have to be sexual in nature. Anyone who makes a commitment to the care taking of another individual performing a service to that person, to their relationship and to the insurance / medical institution / taxpayer that would most likely pay for services that a single person living alone would not be able to provide. People living alone are more likely to all forms of unemployment, isolation, sickness, hospitalization, disability even death. The fact that there is a caretaker with a commitment to another person should not matter whether its a room mate, a relative or an intimate relationship.

Its a shame that Buffalo comes in last on some of these issues but I never found Buffalo to be biased or backwards just parochial unlike Rochester's which is riddled with leftist radicals. Every year its something new in Rochester: women who claim gender descrimination because they cant go topless (ie shirtless) like men, heretics who want to politicize christianity because of women priests, blah blah blah.

Id rather Buffalo be parochial in its own down to earth manner than the politically correct manure that Rochester trots out to the media in an effort to show their progressive. It just comes off as hypocritical as all the marketing that used to come out of their Fortune 500 companies touting diversity. Rochester was never more diverse than anyplace else ... infact ... probably less so since Rochester really isnt a city but a grouping of small suburban and exurban towns trying to be a city. Buffalo on the other had...been there...done that...knows its a city and rather than prejudice...I think Buffalo is just plain corrupt, lazy and parochial.

So I say, does the gay community really need a parade and a float and a protest. Cant it just lobby like everyone else?

If the real goal is a society that is not separated by race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, hair color, shoe size, etc then is it not counter-productive to differentiate your group and demand special rights. Should not rights be justified as rights for all and responsibilities for all and justified for all.

ChristieLou, another insulting comment fixated on the gay community? As a man who has pretended to be woman on this site, maybe they'll let you join their parade if you learn the secret handshake.

And now, you have a new target: Rochester's leftist radicals. Maybe you can stand guard at the city line to keep them all out of Buffalo.

Why because I said they were overweight?
Why because I said that I believe in human rights for everyone with equal rights and responsibilities rather than lobbying specific rights for specific groups?
Why because I said that this is only for government workers and that government workers should not have different wages and benefits and work contracts substantially different than the private sector?

As usual, as a leftist, atheist/agnostic, socialist/communist, rights dont come from god nor are they endowed by the people but are given by nobless oblige by big government...you are critical...that everything is prejudiced and insulting...but as usual you lack substance to anything you say. You think about nothing. Nothing penetrates you.

I guess you could say that I understand Ron and Rand Paul and you understand Nancy Pelosi. I dont expect any common ground with you.

a few observations: obesity is an american problem, not a gay one. better stay away from the st. patrick's day parade. lots of big beer guts there. but while we're on the subject, does the irish community really need a parade? can't it lobby like everyone else?

rochester was incorporated as a city in 1830, two years before buffalo.

oh, and about "differentiating your group:" 364 days of the year, irish people, gay people, and everyone else who puts on an ethnic festival go about their lives. they work, sleep, pay taxes, buy groceries. on one day a year they throw a party centered on their history or traditions and our community is the wealthier for it. i can't wait to see what kind of somali festivals we might see in the future as this community grows.

anyway, big congratulations to kitty and cheryl!

ok, I was making a joke not attacking. I thought some people were bigger than that. I support domestic partnerships but I view it from allowing someone to name a partner and/or caretaker which should be eligible to share health benefits. This I think should be available to all not just civil servants and not just the G&L community. I think the justification for civil liberties is best justified for ALL. That puts me in the category of civil libertarian not liberal. Sorry if that makes me evil to you liberals.

sinjill, your absolutely right. San Francisco was one of the few cities that kept the things which gave it character, history and a recognizable brand across the nation and the world. They resisted the temptation for urban renewal and demolition that most other cities embraced. I applaud them for it. I still disagree with the liberalism, the porn, the beatniks, the hippies, the drugs, etc that came out of that city

grad94, your absolutely correct. I do cringe and get embarrassed when people behave in appropriately at parades, floats, even sports venues or any public gathering. People forget that these public gatherings can include families and children. Adults in public should be role models. So no its not particularly a G&L thing. If cities are going to see returning populations and be friendly for families then we must make them family friendly. For the most part Buffalo is but like anywhere. Its why I think Buffalo can be a wonderful place whether one is G&L or single or within a family unit.

BlackRockLifer, what holds back minorities is unsafe neighborhoods the the horrible education they receive in public schools which would be remedied by school choice and school vouchers. It is NOT civil libertarians who are preventing equal rights for minorites. Civil Libertarians believe civil rights do not have to name the category of the person you are in order for them to be justified or enforced. Oh and in 1960, 60% of all levels of degrees(HS, ASSOC, BACH, Masters, PHDs) went to men and over 60% of all entrepreneurs were men. Today in 2010, 60% of all levels of degrees are graduated by women, 60% plus of all entrepreneurs are women. THIS LAST RECESSION HAS OVERWHELMINGLY LANDED SQUARELY ON MEN BECAUSE MEN HAPPEN TO PREDOMINATE IN HIGHER CYCLICAL AND HIGHER RISK JOBS. ONE MUST WONDER WHEN AFFIRMATIVE ACTION FOR THE MALE GENDER WILL BE APPLIED? Again civil rights should be justified for everyone and not justified by identity groups. Didnt anyone teach you one nation under god and indivisible with life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It does NOT say we are an amalgam of separate and distinct group identities granted rights by statistical bias of disenfranchisement by big government.

Paul Morgan, well I think your so entrapped in your perspective that your rigidity blinds you to the obvious. Yes you deserve your rights and you them to be enforced but are you fighting for rights for yourself, the group you identify with or civil rights for all who are dis-enfrachised.

Its amazing how one can be attacked if speaking from the role of a civil libertarian.

Paul, by we you mean thats just what you think.

Reggie, sarcasm? why? are you not proud of who and what you are? Are you not proud of your race, ethnicity, your gender, your religion, your sexual orientation (not that I or anyone wants to know), your beliefs, your opinions, etc?

Reggie, are you threatened and angry because only certain groups deserve to be proud and other groups deserved to be silent, certain beliefs deserve to be spoken and others deserve to be silent, that certain groups deserve statistical monitoring and laws and affirmative actions even if they no longer need it while others who may should remain silent and ignored because their not in the approved group.

Reggie, Im trying to understand your sarcasm. Are you threatened and angry because you perceive prejudice or because the strength in my beliefs threatens you? or do you purceive the hypocrisy of perpetuating a politically correct victimization mentality so you can promote lobbying to a beter advantage even though your group may no longer be the group that is the most descriminated, the most victimized and/or the most disenfrachised. In which case your using your own...to promote your own selfish interests while preventing others who may be in greater need from getting the assistance they need.

Or is it simply that you as a liberal cannot see a human being simply as a human being but you must see them in an Archie Bunker type of classification and category which defines their voice and participation based on their greivance. Civil libertarians look at human beings as human beings and if there is a civil right then its justified for all and not just for a particular faction of our nation.

May i suggest that you re-read the declaration of independence, the constitution and the bill of rights to which the world is still in awe that they were ever part of a government. Perhaps even educate yourself on the Age of Enlightenment / Age of Reason and the people that fought and died for freedom of assembly and freedom of speech.

no that was sarcasm and a joke

i trust that you can tell the difference between humor, even sarcastic humor and the substantive part of an opinion.

So if thats whats bothering you then Im sorry you didnt appreciate my attempt at humor...lets move on...

but to be fair, yes, even overweight adults are bad role models for children. Childhood obesity is at epidemic proportions as junk food invades schools and everywhere children frequent, computers and video games keep kids isolated and inactive. Diabetes and other weight related diseases are common and the age on onset is getting earlier and earlier. So you know what...practically everything an adult does...from their dress...to their speech and manners, to their weight, etc...kids are sponges.

look there are some dont even want to pick apart my point, they just stalk BuffaloRising for any comments that might reflect my opinion...

then there are people that just read enough to find fault and discredit what I have to say, like you

point is...unfortunately...both are unproductive and signs of a weak mind that is incapable of sifting through to the core...and at the core...is a desire to see a better future for Buffalo and the people that live in Buffalo.

My fiance and I wanted to enter into a legal domestic partnership, and were forced to venture to Rochester, NY, the nearest major municipality to recognise and permit such an event. I find it very disappointing that he and I were not permitted to do this in Buffalo, and even if we had waited we would not be allowed because we are an opposite sexed couple. We either provide equal rights or we don't. Gays and lesbians ahould be allowed to be married and straight couples should be allowed domestic partnerships. There are many different relationship dynamics out there and the City of Buffalo (or other government) should not be allowed to define them.

Jenna, thank you! thank you! thank you! this is exactly my point. This is about providing shared benefits or access to benefits for anyone who takes on the commitment of permanently caring for another person in a relationship. Society benefits by having a caretaker provide the support that the government would be forced to provide if that caretaker was not present.

It shouldnt be framed as a Gay and Lesbian issue. If someone is your caretaker then it should not matter whether they are two friends in a non-sexual relationship, two family members, two straight partners in an intimate relationship or two gay partners in an intimate relationship.

In that sense, if a right can be justified then that right should be justified for all. Thats very much a civil libertarian viewpoint.

(Its not really a religious issue as in marriage though and using the word marriage actually confuses the issue. Domestic Partnerships and Civil unions are the jurisdiction of the government. Marriage is the jurisdiction of the faith based community.)

No, not really. Who's faith? A baptist church may say no to gay marriage, when a synagogue on Amherst says yes. America does not have a nationally recognized religion, don't forget.

Dirty laundry aside. There is a good side. And, then, the downside. The upside is that the solemnity of a sacred bond can be shared with the community. The downside is that a bigoted mob can now persecute those who choose to disclose their private status. One horrendous example of this tragedy is the Holocaust under Hitler. Nearly one million gays were executed in gas chambers because they came out in a burst of freedom in the thirties. Those sign up sheets became confessions leading to a death warrant. Somber. Oh well. Lets return to "dishing." Isn't that our destiny?
