Say No to State Park Closures

Say No to State Park Closures
Upset about Governor Paterson's announcement that would close a number of state parks as part of his plan to close the current budget deficit?

So are Buffalo Niagara RiverKeeper and Senator Stachowski.  If these closings were to occur, this would be the first time in New York State's history that a governor has closed state parks.

Stachowski feels that there are better ways to save the state money without stripping residents of their recreational facilities.

Please join Stachowski and RiverKeeper for a rally to Save Our Parks at Woodlawn Beach State Park this Saturday, March 6th, at 11AM.  Show Governor Paterson that we say "no" when it comes to closing our State Parks.

Please contact Senator Stachowski's office at 854.3915, 826.3344 and ask for Justin or Michele, with any questions, or simply to voice your support!

There is no doubt that NYS is in terrible financial shape. If Stachowski doesn't like the park closings he should be championing a plan for real State spending cuts in other areas.

Perhaps if Senator Stachowski didn't have two phone numbers and two people to call, the state would not be in this predicament.

Perhaps if George Bush and the Republicans didn't bankrupt the country and New York State we wouldn't be talking about this. I think we should have signs posted giving credit to the culprits at the closed entrance to each park. Maybe something like "this park is closed due to tax cuts for the rich, unfunded and unnecessary wars, and 8 years of greed and incompetence".

Blackrocklifer...you're so right!!! Thank God for Obama. We will be financially sooo much better off with him. Just imagine if he can repeat his first year spending in the next three!!! His plans might put 20 to 30 people back to work, for each billion spent, it's brilliant!!!

Have you noticed even the leaves in the park look a little greener since he's been in office.

Ben- Obama has proved to be too far right and too centrist to bring about the kind of change this country is long overdue for. Nader was right when he said both parties were too comfortable with the rich and powerful while ignoring the needs of the regular folks. The Democrats are just the lessor of two evils, we do need a left leaning party to represent the majority of average Americans.

This is the party of the future, just far enough left to get things done right!

Yes, lets scare everybody with the S-word because we all know how dangerous and subversive Social Security, Medicaid, and a host of other social programs have proved to be for America.
The left in America has little to do with the Socialist Party, it is made up of those that challenge the status quo, reject materialism, and work for a more just future. These are the people making a difference in our city, people putting heart into what they do rather than looking out only for their own selfish interests.

I am not disagreeing with you. Read the platform statement of the Socialist Party, this is what we are asking for. Let's stop fearing it, and start embracing it.

I read through the articles and the party website and posted a link to it, and everyone thinks that it is in jest. It is real, the socialist party in America is gaining traction with those people who are disenfranchised with the Democrats, just like the Tea Party movement is gaining traction with conservatives who are disenchanted with the Republicans.

Read up on the information, it is fascinating and enlightening. I am not afraid of socialism or capitalism, but at some point we are going to need to decide how much of each we will need to run this country effectively. So I encourage you to read up on both.

Sorry, I misunderstood, you are right in that we need to find a blend of the best of capitalism and socialism. Both offer solutions to solve the long standing problems in America.

If you supported the invasion of Iraq or applauded when President Bush landed on the flight deck of the U.S.S. Lincoln, you forfeit the right to complain about spending.

I think if you voted for Carter you forfeit your right to any opinion going forward in American politics

Same goes for anybody that voted for Nixon, Reagan, or Bush. For those that re-elected Bush for a second term, they should forfeit their right to ever voice an opinion again.

Closing 41 state parks is a good start. I say close @80 more on top of that.

The state has @180 state parks. Most of them should never have been pawned off on the state to begin with. @60 state parks seem about right to me. That's one per county. The rest of the parks should be funded on the county or municipal level if that's what the local residents want.

Through a combination of ignorance, indifference, ineptitude and simple acts self serving by "leaders" of both parties, our state is close to falling off a financial cliff.

Sadly, public assets like our state park system, funded during more flush economic times are being offered up as a possibility for cost savings.

I do believe the parks system - like all other NYS services and operations must undergo a objective analysis to assure they are functioning efficiently and more importantly, do so in this new era of economic scarcity.

It is just my humble opinion, but all the major parties are beholden to the powerful forces in this country. They include but are not limited to those who were allowed to become "too powerful to fail." I think Obama made that horrible discovery. Even his own party could not exercise its majority. They may claim fear of their own constituencies, but I contend that is is more likely their own special interests. The constituents have no power here anymore. We are all at the mercy of the media which is under the control of these same powers.

We do know that the MOST obviously painful budget cuts are always proposed first, yes? This dumps the most pain on the least of us, so that our Heroic Politicians can pretend they are saving us when introducing tax increases.
