New Alliance Forms to Bring One Voice to the Cultural Community

New Alliance Forms to Bring One Voice to the Cultural Community
Buffalo is an arts and cultural community on the rise. With new organizations and spaces emerging in quick succession, the new Burchfield-Penney Art Center being one of the largest among them, it is almost impossible not to take note of a cultural landscape that is rapidly expanding and strengthening its voice.

It is for these very reasons that a group of leaders from this thriving community have joined together to create an exciting new initiative, the Greater Buffalo Cultural Alliance (GBCA), whose mission is to "harness the collective resources of the region's cultural organizations to position arts, culture and creativity as critical community assets."

The GBCA is currently composed of 12 key organizations that have joined together in an effort to begin this exciting new endeavor. They hope that many more of Buffalo's cultural colleagues and counterparts will join in their efforts and that this would be a growing alliance.

The idea is that there is strength in numbers, particularly when individual members begin to come together, pooling their resources, for the better good. Goals for the group include promoting public policy, discussing uses of funding and sources for new funding, and to expand awareness in the community in regards to the great number of resources that we, as residents, have at our fingertips.

The GBCA is inviting all interested organizations and individuals to join them on Monday, March 29th for wine and cheese as they unveil, in greater detail, their plans for this new initiative.

Further details are being kept under wraps for now. "We're not saying much yet. We really want people to join us on Monday," said Maria Morreale, Marketing Director at the Albright-Knox.

The Alliance currently includes 12 key members; the African American Cultural Center, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo Arts Studio, Buffalo Museum of Science, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Burchfield-Penney Art Center, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, the Irish Classical Theatre, Just Buffalo Literary Center, MusicalFare Theatre, Road Less Traveled Productions and Theatre of Youth.

The event will be held from 4-5 p.m. at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center. For more information contact Laurie Dean Torrell, Executive Director at Just Buffalo, at 716-861-9985 or via email.

i like the name. i'm tired of "western new york" this and "western new york" that. buffalo provides the identity for this part of the state well beyond the city line and should be recognized as our regional center, especially when it comes to cultural organizations. full speed ahead!

What about CEPA, Buffalo Arts Studios, Big Orbit, etc? Is there a plan for inclusion of other cultural organizations?

The plan is to include many more organizations-- details have not yet been provided as to what the criteria is, but the hope is that the alliance would grow-- all interested cultural organizations should attend the event on Monday, or get in touch with one of the organizers.

I wish this event was after work hours so people could attend

I agree with DW.... with such little advance notice, there is not enough time for persons (who should be constituents) to make time to attend.

This is like declaring a government without a citizenry.

I also hope GBCA will have significant inclusion for indvidual, independent artists; that is artists and arts workers who are not afiliated with institutionalized arts groups.

Id like to speak for all the Buffalonians who are still saddened by the A-K de-acquisition of certain classical pieces.

The A-K has a large art endowment of classical, period and antiquities. Nearly all the museums in Buffalo and Western New York are modern and contemporary so there is a gap in the arts community that has no representation. Worse yet, the A-K has a collection to fill this gap and exhibit it but refuses.

Can we please leave behind the elitist snobbery in the local arts community and exhibit the richness of those who donated beautiful pieces of classical, period and antiquities ...collected during the golden period of our city.
