Got some info? What’s the caption?
Apparently photography runs in the Cascio family as verified here by this sweet photo taken by Joe Cascio's grandfather. Thankfully Joe has access to a ton of similar images taken around the city - it may be a different era, but you should be able to tell where this is. Joe confessed that he is still learning about many of the images, but that shouldn't stop us from showcasing some of them.

This one in particular, taken of the city's beautiful Goldome Building (originally Buffalo Savings Bank and now M&T Bank) is amusing in countless ways. The image calls out for a slew of different fun captions. So far the general response upon viewing this image is, "What the 'heck' is that?" From the looks of it, this must have been in conjunction with the Pan American Expo - is that an Elk on top of that stone mountain gateway? Check out the trolleys!

If I were a betting man, I'd say it's one of the temporary arches under construction for the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) encampment parade in 1901.

The BPOE (Elks) had its national convention in Buffalo only once after the Bank was constructed, so the photo is from 1905 .

agreed. the gar convention was in 1897, not 1901.

Wow, that's one obscure postcard. How did you even recall that to connect it to the photo?

The magic of Google! I figured it had to be Elks-related, so I search "elks convention buffalo" , and found a souvenir mug from 1905. Then "buffalo elks convention 1905" and found a list of BPOE conventions which showed Buffalo in 1892 and 1905, and the postcard site .

Buffalo actually had 2 domes. The other was THE BANK OF BUFFALO!!!!

Though promised, protective scaffolding around the dome was not erected during the recent demolition (1986) of the adjacent Chamber of Commerce Building. The Bank of Buffalo Building has suffered serious and inexcusable damage.

The sheathing of the dome is in tatters, the framework is bent, and the terra-cotta skin of the drum is broken. Does such disregard forebode the plucking of yet another jewel from the the city's bosom?"

oh how painful it is for those who remember what Buffalo once had...

Remembering when we had a Chamber of Commerce ... and commerce, for that matter

Would love to have the Larkin Administration Building rebuilt as the new Chamber of Commerce Building. Well we can dream.

I would love to see an architectural plan not just for new buildings but just to rebuild just a few of the horrible mistakes that should not have been demolished.

Thanks MrGreenJeans! I had it pegged 1904, just never did the research. BPOE clear on the middle of the arch, the trolly car heading south on Main St. is the Hoyt St. trolly. Hope you all enjoyed this one, there's a ton more to come!
