Paladino for Governor?

Paladino for Governor?
The Tea Party group (TEA New York.com) led by Rus Thompson, has tagged CEO of Ellicott Development Carl Paladino as their candidate of choice to run for governor of New York State.

The group believes the outspoken local developer is just the answer to what they feel is poor leadership and representation in Albany. Paladino has made no secret of his disdain for local politics, along with citing dysfunction on the state level, and he has gone as far as taking out print ads, buying radio time, and putting up billboards to say so.

Paladino would be a local option, now that County Executive Chris Collins has decided not to make a bid for the governor's seat.

From the TEA Party statement: Carl Paladino is a political force of his own, is widely respected by all the politicians, is relentless in focusing and driving home the points of failure of Albany and the representatives that are supposed to serve us, We the People.

Only the far right crazies of the tea party would nominate a candidate with even less polish and class than Chris "I put my foot in my mouth again" Collins.

Both sides of the political arena are over-run with self serving scum, selfish ba$tards only looking out for themselves, and their fellow political scum, leaving the public to deal with all the garbage. Its really just a reflection of the nation as a whole. Our National Debt has been run up to 12 Trillion dollars, that's over 100k per taxpayer in the US. If you want a real eye opener take a look.

But your right Obama should have used some kind of magic to fix all this in 13 months.

Yeah, Pelosi, Frank, Dodd, Kennedy, Biden, Edwards, Schumer, etc. all had nothing to do with deregulating investment banks (even though they voted for exactly that in '99), and insisting on lowering standards for subprime loans, and resisting tightening regulations on Fannie and Freddie, etc., etc. even though they're all on tape doing those.

It was all just one party's doing - riiiiiiight....

That's also why Wall St fat cat firms gave their 2nd-most senatorial campaign donations 2006-07 (2nd only to how much they gave Chris Dodd, Republican, opps no, sorry, Democrat) to... a young, new fresh, articulate man... from Illinois... another Republican, opps wait no I mean Democrat, who arrived in the Senate and, coincidentally, did pretty much what Wall St wanted in the senate then ran for president!

Palladino would be an excellent advisor, but not a governor. He is very intelligent and has great, innovative ideas and says things that people like Byron Brown won't becuase they care more about votes than progress (story of NY govt as well as that disaster people refer to as Obama).

I would love to see his influence projected on a larger scale, but I wouldn't vote for him.

At the end of the day, we as citizens have to get out from behind our computers and message boards and do something about it.

So Mr. Blackrocklifer.....

Remember when the geniuses (i.e. Ellicott Dev. crews) 'fixing' the Greystone roof put a Bobcat up there and it plunged through the roof nearly killing the employee? That kind of aplomb may help in Albany ... not.

Actually, come to think of it, can you imagine bottling the frenetic energy coming from a strategy meeting of Carl and Pigeon? Maybe they can both end up in Albany, canoodling down the Hudson, going to NYC, going to the shows together, just having a grand ole' time....forever together...

And I have to admit that NorPark's line after one of your recent entries made me laugh. He poked fun at you because so many of your comments appear obtuse (like, for example, your entry after which he posted that comment). It's often difficult to follow the thread of your thoughts. Perhaps we would better understand your perspective if you fleshed out your arguments/incites with more explanation, rather than trying to distill your thoughts into a few seemingly disconnected lines. I get the impression from some of your entries that we are supposed to read between the lines and connect the dots you think are obvious. matthew, my opinion of you just dropped several significant notches.

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

I'm shocked at the reactions on this website, and the opinions of Mr. Paladino, whom I hold in considerable regard.

Just a few thoughts/reactions:

1) Sure, he can make people feel uncomfortable at times with some of the sociological perspectives that he verbalizes. But in Albany that's going to be as much of a asset as a weakness. That "straight talking" and abrasive attitude is precisely the "bull" that we need to send to the "China shop" that is Albany.

2) Everyday, he's taking huge entrepreneurial risks to rebuild Buffalo one building at a time. I remember being very young and reading the Buffalo News in the 1990s and savoring the (very few) stories that were about new building construction and reinvestment in Buffalo. I wished that developers would invest in my neighborhood too; and I hoped that I would be able to help rebuild Buffalo like they were doing. (Maybe this is the Republican in me, but) developers like Paladino are deserving of praise for their commitment to Buffalo, not indignation (especially when they have the option of investing in more robust real estate markets with more lucrative returns). I never understood why some (liberal-hippie types) demonize successful people for their hard work, success, and oversized civic contribution. The reaction to someone like Paladino shouldn't be some irrational self-righteous indignation. It should be admiration.

3)Unlike any politician I've met thus far, Paladino is his own man. He doesn't owe anyone anything and he can say exactly what he thinks. That's a quality that would be rather unique in a landscape of "plant-life politicians".

4) Imagine a Governor who didn't care about his public image. Maybe if we elected people who were more interested in getting things done and reforming the system instead of getting reelected, maybe--just maybe--we'd start getting things done instead of blindly electing incompetent political hacks whose only experience has been serving in the dysfunctional and pervasively corrupt political system.

An aside disclaimer: No doubt, there are things that I disagree with Mr. Paladino about (more parking downtown is a mistake, for instance). But big picture, Buffalo would be gloriously well served if we had 20 or 30 more Carl Paladinos.

Over and over again the character of the straight talking bull-in-a-china-shop type reformer reveals itself to be a small town political myth. Politicians represent a diverse range of interests and I can't imagine Paladino being able to do that in an intelligent way.

More importantly, we pretty much know he will lose. So, at best he is a very weak protest candidate. Hes no Scott Brown.

Score: -1 ( 1 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

He's more of a Jesse Ventura. And I'd evaluate his political potential much more optimistically: he'll appeal to libertarian tea partiers, pro-business republicans, young people who are mad as hell in every direction (me), and perhaps Reagan Democrat blue collar types. Those are the votes he'll take from other politicians/parties.

But for a third party candidate to be viable, you'd have to get unlikely voters (people who usually just stay home). I see this as being a core constituency of Paladino's political appeal: suburban hockey dads who are fed up with crippling property taxes, downtrodden middle aged men who are mad at the government for absurd economic policies that fore them to bailout banks, and unemployed and underemployed 20-somethings who think that the NYS government is a disgusting joke of an institution.

See, that's how irrational and absurd your logic is: you're blaming Paladino and Hamister for the fact that the region lacks successful minority entrepreneurs? I don't know how you concoct that logic? They're actions have nothing to do with the supply of competent minority entrepreneurs. Yes, it's horrible that there are not more successful minority entrepreneurs in Buffalo, but that doesn't reflect at all on developers who are successful and who are using the incentive programs that the government designed (with the specific intent of influencing the behavior of developers).

Palidino loves his money, and whatever will make him the most of it in the short term(i.e. Rite Aid). To think he has the foresight to fix this state in the way it needs to be fixed is a fools hope. All Palidino would do in the governor seat is make a lot of headlines and even more enemies which is not something you want when we need progress and things to get passed.
