The history of women often seems to be forgotten and tucked away on a shelf; even when recognized in their own times, women are often not included in the history books.
The idea of declaring March as National Women's History Month was the product of the National Women's History Project, which is celebrating its 30th Anniversary. This organization was started to educate and promote the historic and significant accomplishments of women. Their theme for 2010 is "Writing Women Back into History". The Erie County Commission on the Status of Women and the Erie County Library is collaborating with community members and Forest Lawn Cemetery in promoting this event and the many programs being presented during March.
On Sunday February 28th at 2PM, Ted Dibble, Forest Lawn researcher and genealogist, will be presenting a program featuring some of the outstanding women who have impacted our community both locally and nationally - all of whom are buried at Forest Lawn. House Organist for Shea's Performing Art Center and the Riviera Theater Bruce Woody will be on hand to play a few tunes on Forest Lawn's historic Wurlitzer Organ. By the way, there is a rumbling throughout the cemetery that a few permanent residents might pop in to tell their own story, in their own words. And President Fillmore is said to be out and about since he found out a new coin was named after him! Who knows what surprises will be in store?
