The Merlin's project (
posted yesterday) was certainly a step in the right direction for Elmwood's 700-block. It just so happens that there was some other great news for that commercial stretch that unfolded at the same time. Lu Modern Classics has opened a second city location (
other is downtown) in the former Firebrand location. I was sad to see Firebrand go because they put so much work into the location, but that only made life easier for Lu Modern, because the interior looks even better than Lu's former location on the 500-block. "This is where I should have been all along," Lou Schreiber told me when I stopped in to check out the diggs.
The shop is a nice fit when you consider the proximity to other like-minded stores and amenities within walking distance - a lot of Lou's friends own stores nearby and helped to find him a quality storefront. The store might be smaller, but it's filled to the brim... and the lighting and the vibrant colors are super alluring. This is a natural fit for Lu Modern - next to a bank, near hair salons, coffee shops and eateries... it took a while to maneuver onto this block, though I'm sure that all of the headaches it took to get there were worth it.

I'm so excited! I really missed this place being right in the neighborhood -- a perfect walking location. There have been several times since it closed on Elmwood that I've had the urge to pop by there for a gift or to look for myself and now I can again. This is great!
