Vizzi's: Home of the 1/2 Pound Monster Burger

Vizzi’s: Home of the 1/2 Pound Monster Burger
For a while, Buffalo Rising readers have suggested we take a look at Vizz's on Kenmore Avenue whenever the subject of good "dive" style food comes up, especially burgers.

This past week, BR writer Chao Li and I decided to put it to the test.  Vizzi's is half bar, half restaurant, and it's divided that way by a low wall just as soon as you walk through the door.  Not much of a treat for the eyes, Vizzi's had a bunch of regulars hanging at the bar, about half the 15 or so tables filled, and a great aroma that told us we were going to enjoy our meal.

Chao started with the beef barley soup and decided on the steak sandwich that was shaved beef - dripping with cheese and mushrooms - and a side of pasta salad.  The soup was thick and full of barley and big chunks of tender beef, and I gladly took a bite of her enormous sandwich (below).  It was divine.  Not one for pasta salad, I tasted hers, and it was good.

Chao's plate.jpg
I opted for the burger.  Confession: I have had exactly one other burger in the past 8 years, more a matter of choice than any other reason.  I eat beef if that's what my host or hostess is serving, but I don't opt for it.  Still, I wanted to be able to report, so I went for the 1/2-pound "Monster" cheeseburger and home cut fries.

burger.jpg
The fries were outrageous.  The too-much-for one-sitting burger (probably not for big eaters) was great.  And huge.  I asked for it medium-well, and I would probably have liked it better had it been a tad more rare.  Imagine what happens to the outside of a burger that size when the cook is faced with getting rid of traces of pink on the inside.  Lesson learned - it would have been better less cooked.

Our meal, including a couple of beers, came to $30 including tip, and we went home with a lot of leftovers.  I'm sure Chao's boyfriend Keith felt like he had a whole meal when he was done with Chao's half a sandwich and her pasta that she brought home.

I will say this also, the last burger I had was a Coles, right after our nearly 60-degree November day win over Miami at the Ralph.  Maybe it was the day overall, but that burger, the first one to break the years-long cheeseburger fast - that burger was the best ever.  Maybe I'm not a 1/2-pound burger eater, and maybe it was the way Cole's burger was cooked, but I enjoyed every bite to the finish.

Vizzi's was a great visit for good food, and a lot of it.  At one point wile we were eating, one of the bar patrons alerted the bartender that a man had just left, taking the shovel that was parked just inside the door with him.  As everyone at the bar, went to the sidewalk to watch the guy walk down the street, the bartender called out not to worry - seems it was just a guy who lives around the corner, and that was his shovel that he brought in with him.  That's the kind of neighborhood place Vizzi's is - clear your walk and come as you are, shovel in hand, for a beer and a burger.  If you're not a neighbor, it's still worth the drive.

Sounds kinda like the place where a "light-skinned" African-American "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one" could enjoy a burger and a cold one.

Why don't you direct your question to the Senate Majority Leader and senior Democrat from Nevada. That higher moral ground sounds just dreamy.

This place easily has one of the best burgers in the area. I go there all the time and it's always cooked perfectly. The fries are also real good. I would rank this my 3'rd favorite burger in the area, just behind , Ruzzines Rock Bottom (Across from Grovers), and Lake Effect Diner. Also never order any beef medium well or well, there's really no point.

Anybody know their beer selection is like?

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

They have the typical beer selection. Bud, Blue, Coors, etc. Nothing to write home about. But the food is GREAT! Never had anything there I didn't like. The fries are fresh sliced and are easily some of the best ever. They also have a blues band on Friday nights. A good place to get some tasty eats.

I'd argue that a mediocre selection of macro taps is no longer "typical." It seems like more and more places are realizing the value of stocking good beer. I know Sterling Place has Great Lakes on tap, so I'd definitely plan on checking them out before I went to Vizzi's on the basis of that alone. I've heard good things about the burgers at both places, but if all Vizzi's has is crappy beer, I can pass.

Too bad about the beer. The food and blues night seem interesting but it would be nicer if there were some regional beers to go with those burgers.

No offense intended to Ms. Buscarino, but perhaps someone a bit more ... burgervorous would be better qualified to review this place. Anyway, thanks for bringing it to our attention. I've heard rumblings about Vizzi's for a while now and it's probably about time for this burger lover to wander down and check it out.

That said, it's hard to imagine that they serve a better burger than Sterling Place Tavern. I've kept up a near-weekly Sterling habit while sneaking off occasionally to other supposedly "best" burger places in the region, and nothing even comes close.

No offense taken. I'm just coming off of a beef-free phase, but I have a long burgered past - and I know what I like. (Also, I've been begging for a reader review, and no one bit.) Maybe Sterling next. And yes, there were only three beers on tap, lotsa bottles. Just a fun place with good food.

I was actually going to because I'm always raving about their food, but I've been cutting back on my burger and fry intake for a while.

The beef on weck is about the size of a skyscraper as well - about 3/4 pound of fresh, thick-cut beef. Props to Renee behind the bar (my sis), and Karen at the tables (my sis-in-law)!

It doesn't not get any better than sterling. Aside from the best burgers in Buffalo, hands down, the have one of the top 5 draft beer selections, great pierogi, yumbo, and the best hot crispy sauce coated wings.

Idea: We need to do a once-monthly BR lunch/dinner at places like this, where a few regular commenters join us (Dutch treat) and everyone has a say. Table for 10? Anyone in?

I don't eat food, but a liquid lunch is always in play, espcially is pit bull is buying the first round. It will be like being back in Belfast during the Golden Era.

What time's dinner? I'm not a "regular commenter", but I'm in for a night of burgers and beers with a bunch of strangers. I got the first round!

I ate at Sterling Tavern once and although the burger was ok it took over an hour and 20 minutes to get my food. The waitress / bartender never apologized once for the wait or at least explained why it took so long. There were maybe 15 - 20 people in the entire place. It was the only time I didn't leave a tip in my life. I'm sure people here will defend the place but I will never go back based on the fact they didn't even acknowledge the wait, that's terrible service.

Sort of a defense here. The wait for the food is usually long, I have never had to wait as long as your experience, but it is usually a longer than normal wait for the food compared to similar establishments. If you are in a rush and looking to stop someplace for a quick bite, Sterling prob is not he best choice. Can they prob use another employee to expedite things, absolutely. However, if you are looking to post up and have a few pints before you eat, then it wont be an issue. I continue to go to Sterling because the food is worth the wait, I don't mind slinging back some pints of great beer while waiting for my meal, and Judy and company are always pleasant people to talk to.

can't call it 'fast food' if it took that long...

It always takes a long time. You have to know this going in there. Order some apps. Their perogies and sausage plates are a dynamite way to start it out, then just wait for the burger for a long time, chug brews and watch the Sabs game on the tv and talk to your crew, maybe throw in a hot or two.

I find it hard to believe the waitress/owner did not tell you the burgers take a while. I eat there all the time and when I order the burger she always tells me how long it takes.
Sterling is a great little place with friendly owners who take pride in their food and beer!

this place has a nice burger wish i could explain what keep it low means.

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

It refers to Moorish folklore in which the good town hamburger was to be kept in low, fallow ground so as to prevent excess sweating. I think they may still practice the tradition in Chicago, maybe Chromium knows?

Karl, you must have meant Chromey Yum Yum, which is what i say after every bite of every vizzy burger...chromey yum yum..sometimes on the first bite when i say CHROMEY YUM YUM..they tell me to keep it low..keep it to just one yum.

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

Well since you are from Hamburg, the birthplace of the hamburger, you certainly are entitled to "Yum Yum" as many times as you would like. But if they say keep it low, then keep it low, as I will make sure the same.
