I thought the same thing, lol.
So shoot me. I couldn't resist the tie in.
After the initial cringe, it kinda' grows on ya! Nice story, Elena.
Haha. Oh, lordy. I'm changing the name. I can't be making people cringe on a Monday.
Real writers resist temptation to use trite or obvious phrasings...bloggers give in. And no, it does not grow on you, cuz there is no link between the meaning of the song and the event.
.
And to up my cranky quotient a little more: LOVED LOVED luh-huh-huved the 'Free Mumia' poster in PUSH's office. Makes them broad thinkers in my book. NOT!
.
To lower the cranky quotient: The show itself was nothing short of inspiring. It was uplifting to see Buffalo shown in such a good light (literally, thanks to the weather, and figuratively.) I love my hometown! So glad to live here.
.
We did have a short, funny moment at the end (when David Stapleton was about to announce the Canisius scholarships at the community garden) and he said (paraphrased of course) "a home is just a foundation and you need this and that so we got you..." I paused the TiVo and said "wow this show does EVERYTHING! He's going to propose!" Anyhoo. Was funny for us...
.
Congrats to the Powell family. You are very deserving.
Hey, ever read some of the headlines of the Hollywood trades or, even, the New York Times? Makes Elena's play on words seem like Pulitzer ready prose! So, Mr. Anonymous Blogger, tell me more about REAL writers.
Oh, and by the way, according to Rolling Stone magazine, the "Government yard in Trench Town" refers to the Jamaican public-housing project where Marley lived in the late '50s. So, yes, since it has to do with where one lives, it is quite relevant.
I'm in total agreement. Although using words like "quotient," "cuz" and "anyhoo" are signs of great writing, I'm guessing LovinLivinintheBuff is just some dork out there LovinLivininMomsBasement. Keep criticizing, nerd.
I will, thanks.
I'm not a blogger, nor a paid editor. However, I can write. Therefore I will criticize.
And you can keep your childish name calling to yourself.
Most good writers do not start sentences with "and" or "was."
"nothing quite like Buffalo-style overkill"
Such comments by anonymous posters make me angry. Having watched westside decline for decades, seeing this kind of energy & hope in an impoverished neighborhood is 'priceless'.
This should be just the beginning of renewed, creative efforts to address Bflo's massive poverty & housing blight. Fortunately, PUSH, ReUse, ReTree & Americorps appear now to be ready, willing & able.
This energy, goodwill & "Hope" should be leveraged against all the "poverty funds" squandered annually in Bflo for decades by HUD, BMHA<\, City Hall, WSNHS, etc . . with few measurable results.
Keep Hope Alive!
I could not have said it any better myself Mr. Kern.
Hopefully Byron Brown's pre-show speech regarding a push for further redevelopment in the area was not just an empty promise.
Does anyone know who made that wood model of the house for the kid who wanted to be an architect? That was awesome! What a good idea!
I don't know her, but she's cute! I'm guessing it was the girl standing next to it when they were building it. If anyone does know her, hook a brother up! And, no, I'm NOT talking about Ashanti...
Yeah it seemed like the kid liked the model of the house better than the thousands of Legos in his room.
Where is Delores Powell's husband and father of the kids in all this? I didn't see him on the show last night.
let me chime in to the love fest. i had a great time last night and i thought buffalo came off really well. i will say, though, that the -deserving- discourse bothers me. as though there are families who -deserve- dangerous housing or homelessness.
Loved the show and am so happy for the Powell family and the entire neighborhood. I thought it was tatefully done and really showed how many great people live in Buffalo.
The first program, the hour long one on ch. 7, was what we watched. It was concise; it said it all.
We tried to watch the two-hour program that followed. Honestly, we tried. But than we got to the point where we said, 'so help me, if she screeches ONE MORE TIME'... and she did.
Most interesting,(actually, most upsetting), was observing the how-to of a sadly apparent ongoing tradition of fatherlessness being brought over from Jamaica to Buffalo.
.
Any further interest in this particular family of Powells, on our part, will be to follow this saga online, in print with no sound effects, to see if any caring fathers do enter the story--now or in the future...
Uh, Crisa, I don't think that the "sadly apparent ongoing tradition of fatherlessness being brought over from Jamaica to Buffalo" is any of the above. In actuality, fatherlessness in America has been a problem for centuries now. Just ask Thomas Jefferson's kids!
Keep telling that history:
Read the novel, Rescue at Pine Ridge, "RaPR", a great story of black military history...the first generation of Buffalo Soldiers.
How do you keep a people down? ‘Never' let them 'know' their history.
The 7th Cavalry got their butts in a sling again after the Little Big Horn Massacre, fourteen years later, the day after the Wounded Knee Massacre. If it wasn't for the 9th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers, there would of been a second massacre of the 7th Cavalry.
Read the novel, “Rescue at Pine Ridge”, 5 stars Amazon, Barnes & Noble and the youtube trailer commercial...and visit the website http://www.rescueatpineridge.com
I hope you’ll enjoy the novel. I wrote it from my mini-series movie of the same title, “RaPR” to keep my story alive. Hollywood has had a lot of strikes and doesn't like telling our stories...its been “his-story” of history all along…until now. The movie so far has attached, Bill Duke directing, Hill Harper, Glynn Turman and a host of other major actors in which we are in talks with…see imdb.com at; http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0925633/
When you get a chance, also please visit our Alpha Wolf Production website at; http://www.alphawolfprods.com and see our other productions, like Stagecoach Mary, the first Black Woman to deliver mail for Wells Fargo in Montana, in the 1890's, “spread the word”.
Peace.
Peace to you two too!
.
Of course it isn't simply a Jam-to-Buff world of fatherlessness. Ms Powell's situation is definately NOT unique.
.
Injustices happen every second--its the nature of the beast..
.
So then, is the next Extreme also going to be on the west side of Buff?
There is a phrase, "do or die", somewhere in history, but I don't remembe what it refers to.
.
Borrowing from that phrase though, the mother of some of Jefferson's offspring was bound to Jefferson through slavery. In her case it most likely was a case of 'do it or die'!!!

I'm glad for the family, the neighborhood, and the city. The house looks great and much was accomplished. The show has aired. Time to for the family to enjoy the house and for the rest of us to move forward. There is really nothing quite like Buffalo-style overkill.
