Miller's Mask Goes Patriotic, Nostalgic

Miller’s Mask Goes Patriotic, Nostalgic
Paying homage to country and family, Olympic-bound Sabres goalie Ryan Miller's mask features Uncle Sam, his Michigan State mascot, and his late cousin "Matt Man," who lost a battle with cancer.

Miller is being looked at as the likely starter for the United States Olympic hockey team, sporting number 39 (US teammate, goalie Tim Thomas will wear  number 30, Miller's Sabres number).

Two other native Western New Yorker's, Pat Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks and Brooks Orpik of the Pittsburgh Penguins, will play for the US also.

The mask depicts Uncle Sam, rolling up his sleeves and getting ready to do business. It was  designed in Michigan, Miller's home state, based on sketches Miller came up with.

Why doesn't Miller get to wear his #30?

Nice mask.

"his Michigan State mascot" - I'm assuming this means "Sparty" the Michigan State University mascot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sparty). I wonder if they went with the traditional bronze Sparty or the sideline foam version. Can anyone find a photo of the other sides of the helmet?

hmmm... Now I am seeing the back. FYI the Bulldog on the back with the green sweater and hat is definatly NOT the MSU mascot.

That's not the back of the Olympic mask. That is a picture of the back of his Sabre mask.

Because Tim Thomas has seniority over Miller. 39 is the number that Miller wore in college.

Seniority shouldn't matter. It should be the better player/starters choice.
Do you think the senior member on the Canadian team who has the same number as Crosby will wear his number?

Yes they should, and usually do. Also Miller wanted 39 when he came to buffalo, but there was another goalie who made that number famous.

do you really think miller is having as difficult of a time dealing with his number change as you are?

no one on the canadian team wears 87 besides cindy. but i'm sure toews won't be wearing his 19 and it's probably because of seniority and not because thornton is a beast.

What's the big deal? It's just a number. I think it's neat that he's wearing 39 again, it's reminiscent of his days as a Spartan. He probably prefers 39 over 30 anyways.

39 should be retired for the Sabres. 6 Vezina's and 2 Hart's. No other Sabre was as dominant as Hasek was or personally carried the team further... even Perreault (that's right, I said it!)

i guarantee nobody else on the canadian team wears the number 87, and even if there was and they were a veteran player with seniority over crosby, he would give it up

Luckily for him Michigan isn't all that far away as everyone knows there is no artist in WNY who could have come up with that design.

I really hope you are being sarcastic, there are lots of talented artists in Buffalo and western NY. The reason he went with that gentleman is because he has worked with Miller since he was a teenager.
