Homeless Safe Haven Project Completed

Homeless Safe Haven Project Completed

A historic brick structure has been rehabbed and expanded by Lakeshore Behavior Health, Inc.  The adaptive reuse project at the northeast corner of Sycamore Street and Michigan Avenue created a sixteen-bed homeless housing facility.  BHNT Architects designed and Savarino Construction built the $1.4 million project.

An existing 2½-story brick structure at 108 Sycamore Street, was renovated to contain the major living and dining areas and a new commercial-grade kitchen.  A two-story, 2,800 square foot wood framed addition to the rear contains most of the living areas.  It features 16 single-occupancy rooms, multiple common baths, two sitting areas, a living room, dining area and kitchen.  Exterior trim remains to be painted.

Lake Shore Behavioral Health promotes self-sufficiency, mental wellness and recovery, and an enhanced quality of life for all individuals with mental illnesses and chemical abuse disorders by providing effective, accessible and culturally sensitive services.

I've been watching this project. What a great reuse for a lovely old brick building.

I hate to be critical, but I just don't understand the addition and its ability to contextualize itself into the urban fiber of place. First off, the cornice should be...built to curb....Elmwood Village..tackle shop...sprawl kills more per year than cigarettes.

Hats off to Lake Shore. This building sat deteriorating for so many years. Excellent re-use plan and a creative design.

Any plans to clean the brick wall on the left-side of the brick house? Would it require sandblasting?
