Haynes in as Ellicott District Council Member

Haynes in as Ellicott District Council Member
As you know, Dr. Curtis Haynes Jr. was voted in as Ellicott District Councilmember in a 6-2 vote.  His acceptance speech calls for cooperation and commitment, and Haynes said he intends to reach out to every other candidate who sought the Ellicott seat in order to work together toward the betterment of the district.

Prior to the vote that resulted in Haynes' appointment, Councilman Demone Smith, who was in favor of the appointment of Rev. Darius Pridgen, held the floor and protested consideration of any candidate other than Pridgen, based on the Ellicott District Democratic Committee vote that favored Pridgen.  See the wnymedia.net video, below.

Though it's barely audible through Smith's tirade, the vote was tallied, and Haynes was able to make his acceptance speech. "My mind is open, and I extend my hands," Haynes stated.  He goes on to talk about the challenges of the area and calls for solutions and commitment.  At the end of his speech, Haynes goes to each councilmember for a handshake, and ends by embracing Smith, as those gathered cheer.  (WNYMedia Video below.)

Mr. Smith is ridiculous. I don't know how to reply to his rant. I can't get past him calling the entire city hall and the people in charge of hiring racists because "you will not see any black faces" I am speechless.

The right person was chosen even though its not what Byron "Steve Urkel" Brown wanted. They can grandstand all they want (which is an embarrassment to themselves and the people they represent) but more "Urkel" cronies is not what this city needs. A well respected, educated, non-endorsed, candidate will be a revelation in this dysfunctional one party government that the city has.

If you pay taxes in the city....

Avg council member salary (ballpark) $50K

Number of council members - 9

Compensation per day ((50,000 x 9) / 365) = $1,232.88

Hours per day (debatable based on this clip) - 8 (or 480mins)

Compensation per minute (council) - $2.57

Amount of time Demone Smith wasted during this session - 8min

Money wasted by Smith (this incident) - $20.55

Estimated taxpayer funds wasted by council member Smith (based on 260 working days in a year) - $5,342.57

What facts do you have to back up this "crooked, bullying Rev" comment?

I kind of like this New guy so far. He seems to know what this city needs and has the educated back ground to know how to get it to happen. I look forward to seeing the day when we have large corporations locating here, neighborhood developments that are actually urban friendly (brownstones, mixed building with first floor retail, restaurants and upper floors- offices, living spaces), paved streets/sidewalks, better street lighting and more. If we really want people to stay here, kids to stay out of trouble, we need JOBS!!!!!! Quality of life, clean streets. ...you don't know how sick and tired I am of hearing after every murder "we need a community center or more religion for these youths".....Be REAL! You want kids to stay off the streets? give them JOBS!!!!

"He seems to know what this city needs and has the educated back ground to know how to get it to happen." You know what really sucks? Is when you think about who this guy will have to deal with to actually get anything done.

Maybe this a real sign of reform here in Buffalo, the business as usual folks were not able to control this appointment. Good luck to Dr. Haynes.

I am surprised BRO has not had any comment on Chris "give me a lap dance" Collins latest blunder. We seem to celebrate dysfunction in the city and ignore it elsewhere. The county control board is projecting tax hikes and Collins cannot depend on stimulus handouts again this year to bail out Erie County. Kind of ironic this small government Republican relys on Democratic largesse to govern.

How did this douche get elected? He doesn't even know the difference between "ask a question" and "axe a question"! Seriously? How could someone so ignorant attain this position of relative power? "Axe" was not the only example, either.

Does Demone Smith not realize that Dr Haynes is himself African American

DUMBone Smith is an embarrassment to the council and his district. I cringe every time he speaks! All he ever whines about is racism, which makes him a racist for bringing it up every time he gets a chance.

You don't know how sick and tired I am of hearing about racism from african-american politics. If one is elected or hired simply because of race then that is just WRONG. To be fired or thrown out of office because you stole, broke the publics trust or simply broke the law and you just happen to be African-American, that is NOT racism.
